I know some of you don't like these kind of thread, but I just want to share my own experience with you guys about Plextor drive and the support feedback I got.

First of all, Plextor really makes good drives. I had very little errors with my backup and all the DVD movie backups played fine with my old DVD players. No complains here..

I bought my PX-708A in July 7th, and were using it fine until couple month ago. I didn't notice the problem back then, but found out when I tried to copy some stuff out of my backup disc.

On the edge, the disc had a scratch. I never even touched the disc after I burned it, so I was very curious. So I did some tests. The scratch was indeed deep so some of the datas that was written outside of the disc were lost.

Then I found out that whenever I insert the disc, PX-708A tries to notice the blank media so it spins. The scratch gets from there. It doesn't matter what kind of media, once I inserted the blank media, my drive was scratching it.

I've always used the Ritek blank media as primary. First I thought it could be the blank media's quality so I tried the Plextor's recommended blank DVD media from Verbatim, same result. I tried blank TDK's and Benq's CDRs, still scratches. Now my PX-708A is a scratching machine!

So I sent the e-mail to the Plextor about this problem. I knew that my drive was in 1 year warranty, so I wasn't expecting anything like free replacement.

And I got the reply in 24 hours :

---------------------------------
Dear xxxx:

You will have to purchase a new drive. the drives only have a 1 year warranty from date of purchase, we can not replace or repair this drive you have.
Thank You
Plextor America Support Team

---------------------------------

Just 1 line. Not even typical automated template that saying 'We're sorry to hear that' line. Just 'buy another one'. That's not very 'supportive'.

I've used HP (hated), Panasonic, and other OEM product (I think it was NEC) and their average life cycle was about 3 to 4 years. I've heard good things about Plextor but it died on me in 15 months! That's not a very high quality product. And the support? As sharp as marble..

I know that many of you have good experience with Plextor, but if you're considering Plextor just because it had some good reviews, you might want to think again. The worst support I've ever got from the company.

Thanks for reading it.

PS : BTW, does anybody know about this problem? I'm sure the drive is scratching my media when it tries to brake the spinning disc, but not sure why it keeps scratching it. I wanted to post this on the advanced users forum so maybe somebody could give me a good answer.

out of all my computers that I ever had I never heard of a drive scratching the media! I'm sorry this is happening to you. And I do know about big business sticking it to the consumers! they are all the same...... but.......Also the DVD writers have come down in prices and you can find one for 49.00 on up! Depends what you want.... I like the BenQ drives...... I read a lot about their software and I know some really experienced Addicts here that swear by them:http://www.meritline.com/light-scribe-external-usb-combo-drive-be... I was thinking about the external drive as a second writer for my computer. it's on sale now for 99.00!!!! I think Creaky has this writer...... you can have the same drive as an internal or external writer! good luck to you!

Scratching was a problem reported on the Plextor forum:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=82657&highlight=scratch

Most people just sent in back for repairs by requesting an RMA.

You need to type very firm but polite letter, explaining that the problem you reported is, unlike as you first communicated a one off problem, but one that has been experienced by a large number of customers and brought to their attention in the past. (Give the link to the forum listed earlier)

The fact that you were unlucky enough not to have this known design fault appear in the standard warranty period seems to have left you in the position of needing to replace the drive at your own cost, unlike those people that had it appear earlier in the products life.

Make it quite clear you would have expected a company with such a good reputation for quality to have issued a recall on that product, or at least post advice on their website warning people what to look for.

You've paid a premium price for what should be a premium product, and regardless of what they are required to do under statutory warranty obligation you would have expected a premium level of service.

The failure on the drive, is not one that could be described as normal wear and tear, or component failure, it is obviously a failure in the design which allows this to happen, and as such you should not be expected to merely accept it as luck of the draw.

State that you already received a dismissive response from the service centre and as such would appreciate being passed to someone with a higher level of authority who will have the power to authorise a replacement or at the least a repair at no cost.

You should also telephone or write to the people you bought it from and ask for their help to support your case, ask if they have had many complaints about this model, or could they try and get a replacement or repair for you as one of their customers.

Mainly don?t put anything in writing that will get their backs up, or p*ss them off, try and get whoever deals with the request to work with you.

I have made point of dealing with such problems in a way that gets me what I want 95% of the time, there will always be the odd one that will never budge, but most will give in if they think that you aren?t being rude or threatening.
