My NEC 1300a DVDRW Drive has suddenly stopped reading any DVD media. It will only read CDs. Not even commercial DVD's work and burning is not possible. I have uninstalled the drive, updated firmware, changed the read settings to DMA. I have even taken the drive out and set it as Master and still nothing. Is there anything I can do or shall I just get a new drive.

It sounds like your drive could be on the way out. I had an old plextor that slowly over time refused to read DVD-R/W and then it started to have problems with some DVD-R burns. Well, it ended up in the trash. DVD burners are far less expensive then thay used to be. Now, you have to ask your self one question, how much time do you want to spend on a piece of hardware that is on its way out.

Thanks for the advice but my drive is less than a year old and I just started using it to back up DVDs (I've only done it twice in the past few weeks and these were the first times)so I'm hoping I can fix it and not have to shell out any cash to replace something that's practically new.

Try one of those "Cleaning Disks" with the little brush embedded in the disc to clean the laser lens. However, don't get your hopes up too high as I suspect the laser may be out.

I am having a serious problem with my 1300a. All of a sudden, it will no longer burn DVDs. It will start the write process and then crap out. Below you will find the log files from a simulated burn and a real burn. The simulated burn went fine but the real burn crapped out. Any insight would be most helpful and thank you in advance.

I am using approved media. Is there something else that could be my problem. I searched both log files and cannot find an answer.

Your firmware is way out of date, no wonder it is not burning. Current at the NEC site is 1.0b which is what I am using for my 1300a

It might be advisable to get yourself better media. My Nec likes the recommended media of Verbatim, Sony, Maxell or Fuji.

Try the fw update, and get some better media. NEC drives are not too picky but they do like the quality media. I have had my NEC for over two years and it still burns DVD's beautifully.

I know firmware page is listing 1.0C but I usually go by the mfr site, until tested. NEC is till listing 1.0B for this drive.

Don't remember as it was quite a while ago. Much More than a year.
Here is a link to Liggy & Dee site containing the original NEC 1.0c firmware: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/1300/

The Liggy and Dees is the modified NEC fw, so unless you know what you are doing I usually will send someone to the mfr site first.

I tried the new firmware and new media and still nothing. Is there a chance that the burner is shot? It is almost 3 yrs old and has burned around a thousand disks.

Yep
Could try the drive in another computer or another drive in your computer, just to confirm that you NEC is gone. Don't sweat too much as drives have really come down in price and you can get an new NEC 3550 from www.newegg.com for around $40. Other brands in same price range as well. Faster with DL capabilities and updated firmware for newer media would be newer features.

Use the quality media. Verbatim, Sony, Maxell or Fuji all are available retail and check for sales you can get them for 14.99 for 50. The best disks are Taiyo Yuden and available online from reputable dealers.
