Hello, need some help. I have an old Gigabyte G0 - W0804A dvd writer and i am trying to upgrade the firmware. My writer does not seem to recognise 16x dvds. it just gives me the option of 2x and the quality isnt very good. I have read that this drive is just a rebadged Lite-On - LDW 851S drive. I managed to find some patched firmware for this drive,at http://codeguys.rpc1.org/dvdrw_overview.html, but i'm not sure if its a good idea to use it. The firmware ??name?? is GS0P. When i try and flash the drive it comes up with a warning that the drives current firmware, GSY1 is the latest and i shouldnt continue.

Any suggestions. I am really desperate for help as i am finding more and more writeable dvd media that my drive wont recognise. Would upgrading the firmware solve this problem?

thanks

If you try to flash with hacked firmware you take a risk of rendering your drive unusable .. What I'd recommend is to buy a modern drive, you can get one for less than $40 ... Here's three good ones at NewEgg ...

Thanks for the advice. You're probably right! Time to get a new drive. Do you think 16x dvd writers are the best bet or are they going to become outdated soon if they bring out even faster dvd media.

snick,

16x dvd burners are a very safe bet, besides, even IF faster than 16x rated dvd media comes out, WHY would you want to burn even faster? the general rule of thumb here regarding burning dvd video/movies, is to USE Good Quality blank dvd media to begin with and keep your actual BURNs @4x, while if you use REALLY GOOD MEDIA, i, among others burn successfully @8x~, but there should be NO REAL reason why someone would WANT to burn any faster, especially for video on dvd~ :) burning faster increases your chances of errors and could result in a "coaster" or pixellation, freezing, skipping, among many other problems with the dvd when come time to view it on a standalone players~ :)

so, yes, you should invest in a good dual layer/dvd-r/dvd+r/DL compatible burner, it will be worth it, don't worry about the "faster rated media" in the meantime, the 16x discs NOW are no better than the 8x and some of the 4x media that were readily available years ago. it's just a natural progression of technology, i'm happy with my 4x and 8x rated media just fine, make sure you use the "good stuff" though, you will be glad you did...check my sig. for suggestions on media~ :)
