Having successfully used DVD+R for some time now, I recently bought a spindle of Datawrite Titanium DVD-r's. So far, I have had 10 coasters! I am using DVD shrink and Clone DVD, but the writing process fails at about the same point each time. I have tried the discs on a friends machine and they work fine. My writer is a Lite-On DVDrw SOHW 16735 rev JS01. I have just tried copying another disc using Nero 6 and it has failed as well. Can anyone help me out please?

hi, i can indeed help out here. let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

ps your firmware is quite a few versions out of date, JS0C is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2026

just did a quick search as to which disc manufacturers Datawrite use for their Titanium discs - hmmm, if it's 8x -R discs you're using, the disc manufacturer could well be CMC Magnetics - if so, oh dear!.

edit re the 8x -R discs - just checked some more and (oh dear) these come in 3 differing quality in disc manufacturers - CMC MAG or MCC02RG20 or TTG02 - in my opinion the only decent ones there are the MCC ones. The problem is i bet there's no way to tell which ones are which, simply from looking at the packaging ie one day you might buy a tub of these and get MCC-manufactured disc (top stuff) and another day you might pick up an identical tub and they'd be CMC-manufactured (atrocious).

if they're 16x -R discs the quality could well be a mixed bag depending on if you have MCC03RG20 discs (top discs) or TTH02 discs (hmmm i don't believe they're much good at all, certainly no comparison to MCC discs)

Hi Creaky,
Just got your reply.
I have tried upgrading the Lite-On firmware but no success as yet.
I decided to reinstall Nero an hour ago and have just uninstalled it so I cannot send the log file at present.
Once it is reinstalled I will try to write a DVD-R again and then send the log file. It is looking lokely that it is a really poor batch of discs, but Earlier this evening, I also tried a BenQ disc- with the same results

cool.
ps, a way to just verify the MID (media id code) of a disc is to download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and use it to 'identify' one of those discs, pasting the results here. this doesn't guard against having fake discs though, ie those codes are easily faked, though there are other ways to prove that anyway. (just mentioning that as this way of checking disc codes isn't 100% foolproof)

- uninstall Roxio, it interferes with Nero. To fully eradicate Roxio you may have to google search for 'Roxio Zapper'..

do all that, try a simulation burn and post the log entry. off home now, maybe hear from you then..

Hi Creaky,
Thanks for that. I will do as you suggest. I did download a patch from Roxio to avoid the Nero/Roxio conflict but maybe that is the problem. I am off to work in 30 mins so I might not be able to do anything until tomorrow, but once done, I will post the results.

Try Burning at lower speeds may be 1X or 2X, On my Old DVD burners I had exact same problems if I used non branded DVDs, but burning at lower speeds did work, although it took more time.

TTG02, I've been seeing that MID code showing up quite a bit. Usually on the TDK dash 8x media.A lot of issues with them.I also have not tried that MID code.

@ saugmon hi :)
yes your right they are TDK -R/-RW
not rated well here on AD from what i've seen
although digitalFaq rate them as 1st class, and a lot of our members seem to rate their info as sacred (which i do not by the way)
@ creaky :) yes the burn speed is a tad high

change to dash format was forced on me. I live on the ISle of Skye and we only have a small supplier whose latest batch of dvd's was the - format. As I hadn't tried them before, I thought I would have a go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - bad mistake.
Will post the new log file tomorrow after I have tried the suggestions.

SUCCESS!!!!!
Thanks a million Creaky. I removed Easy CD Creator and used the Roxio Zapper. Immediately, the drive read and wrote DVD_R and DVD+R with no problems. I would never have realised that the problem was caused by a conflict between Roxio and Nero.
Do you know if there is any sort of patch available to overcome this conflict?
Thanks once again. I now know where to come for really excellent advice.

To all who replied with advice.
Thanks a millioin.
The one thing I have learned from this is that "Special Offers" are not always the bargain you think they are.
In future, I will be only buying decent branded media.
Anyone got any suggestions as to the most reliable brand of DVD's?

glad you're sorted. See my sig for decent media. As to the roxio thing, I've read the odd post where newer versions of roxio are supposed to co-exist better than it used to, but I usually think 'why chance it'.

Have fun

as per the TTG02 discs, TDK's own manufactured discs, i HATE THEM with a passion~ :)

from saugmon:
Quote:

UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME, i HAVE tried them and i would take the Memorex ANYDAY over them, that's how bad they were for me...

can i safely assume that when you guys (creaky & gurnard) reply on threads with TDKs own manufactured media that you go based on MY opinion of them? LOL if so, then i sincerely VALUE and take that as a compliment of the highest nature~ :) THANK YOU for going by MY opinion of TDK's *cough* crappiness~ LOL

i'm just off home so i'll be quick... yup, kivory666, your comments re TTG02 are indeed heeded by me, along with any other guys round here that don't like them. What media i don't/won't use is only commented on by me if i can rely on some trustworthy experiences :)

Anyone got any suggestions as to the most reliable brand of DVD's?
Depends on which format you favor.Looking at those tdks, the dash format has some better manufacturers than their plus format. But seeing all the problems with TTg02,best to avoid TDK.Yours may have been fakes!

I booktype my backups to dvd-rom using the plus format.Your lite-on should also be able to booktype the plus format if you ever need it.
I buy whatever the good quality media that is on sale like.Sony and fuji Taiyo yudens on my last 2 batches.Look for made in japan on their wrappers.Maxell also a very good brand name in the plus format, especially the 8x speed. Lots of Hitachi's in those made in japan spindles of maxell!!!!
Ritek-r03 another good media, and can't forget about verbatim data life plus and genuine taiyo yuden.

Dash format, The sony and Maxells:Made in japan are also very good. Verbatim and taiyo yuden also some of the best.Riteks also up there.

Sounds like you are limited for what you can get for dvd media. The quality media will save you many headaches. Not only trying to get them to burn, then you have the standalone player factor. Some of them can pick out the quality differences in your media with a poor playback.

Something I just noticed:

but the writing process fails at about the same point each time
What area are the burns failing: Beginning during the lead-in/middle/or toward the end of the backup?

being a logfile freak i see quite a bit of TTG02 codes but go by your lot's experience with them. for instance i take great notice of saugmon's endless media posts too (and i'm always tuned in for info on staples/office depot sales - i just love reading about media lol) :)

I only buy media online so i bulk buy Verbs like they're going out of fashion; just bought 250 Verb TY's this week but it's been a long week so i'm, gonna treat myself to more - it's not fair on Verbs to have them sat on some cold pallet in a warehouse when they could be on the cold (colder) floor of my boat. i'm happy to be more blinkered with media than most as i always use you guys' experience with other media and of course i have 1000s of afterdawn members' logfiles to go by as to what not to waste money on!. now where's that webpage for those Verb TY's....gotta order another LG 4167B anyhow..
