Has anybody made a copy of a copy using Taiyo Yuden 8x+R discs and a NEC 3540A burner? If so, how long did it take to burn? The reason I ask is, I have a TEAC DV-W58E that will burn Ridata 4x+R discs in 20 minutes. Now with the TY discs, it takes 45 to 60 minutes. I have updated the firmware, same thing. When I burn from the origanal it takes the same amount of time as the Ridata's do. If I copy a Ridata from a TY, it only takes 20 minutes. It is just when I copy a copy to a TY that takes so long.
So any way, I was thinking of upgrading to a dual layer, faster burning, burner. Any help on this would be great!
upgrading is fine but you will still need to follow the recommended 4x burn speed.The discs are still not durable enough for higher spins and the heat that is produced .
From having the dvd on your hard drive , through the compiling of the dvd and then burn stage Nero takes 13.48 minutes
every other copy 2,3,4 etc takes 9 mins
Make sure you consider upping your ram and chip set.
Why not update to a quality 16x/dual layer/dual format/and a booktyping capable DVD-RW drive like the Benq 1640?
Advantages: Booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom makes them more compatable in stand alone players. They love majority of media including cmags, UGHH! On The Fly rip and burning is no problemo.Mine loves those Yuden000-T02 that is on the Taiyo yuden +8x media. Excellent PIE and PIF scans on my backups.

Dis-advantage: I still keep the burn speed at 4x. Less chance for errors and later on,re-ripping those backups will be easier.Can't really find anything wrong with it,except it only came with drive only,no software/cables/and no original box.
If you have room,set your teak as the reader and the new drive as your burn target.
I did upgrade to the NEC 3540A and upgraded the f/w to 1.W7. It does a wonderful job burning. The problem now is, they do not play on my Panasonic DVD/VCR. I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. I also have tried with Xcopy. I have even tried DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink 3.2, and Nero. I changed media as well, nothing seems to bring the Panasonic back online. All the burns with the TEAC work flawlessly on it. I figure it is a -R player not agreeing with +R media even though my old discs were Ridata +R's. Is there anyway to trick the player to make the +R discs work once again?
Some of those players can be a pain in the a**,especially when you change burners. Lots of variations on them,meaning one format from old burner will play on one stand alone,then you change drives and it won't recognize those new drive backups.
Give the dash a shot,and make sure they are high quality.Stand alones are funny when it comes to playing backups from different DVD-RW drive,you'll have to start all over on finding which format is best suited.

This is where booktyping helps. I noted earlier I booktype all my plus media to dvd-rom and the overall compatability on all my personal/family/and friends drives are phenomenal.All 3 benqs I have booktyped play in 95% of those drives,whereas other burners I have couldn't even come close to those stats. When you backup a lot of family videos and those backups get around,I make them as compatable as possible so I get less complaints.
This booktyping fools those stand alones into thinking they are actual dvd-rom which is the more universal format.
Only the plus format can be booktyped.Not all drives support this bitsetting capability. NEC and Pioneer need hacked firmware.
I believe the NEC has to have a special/hacked firmware to achieve booktyping.I don't know of it right off the bat,but I know there are topics at cdfreaks.com.
If the dash fails you,and you know that player won't play your yudens,then that firmware may do the trick.
