So it goes like this...My laptop DVD +- RW DL died on me. Lucky me I'm still covered by Dell's warranty so they are going to send a new optical drive. The thing is I'm gonna be doing some serious ripping and burning. I'm gonna back up my entire CD collection and then some of my DVD collection. I need a cheap (if possible) EXTERNAL USB 2.0 DVD Burner to share the load. Or, you could recommend me a Die-Hard EXTERNAL Burner that can take a beating. I mean, I'm gonna abuse that baby so much the neighbors will call Child Services. Please submit your models.

PS Are these brands any good? Fantom, LG, Lite On or I/O magic?

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

I have an external Plextor 716. I use it quite a bit, don't know if I beat the hell out of it as much as you'd like to, but it's an excellent burner thats so far given me a couple hundred burns without a coaster. But it's not exactlly cheap though.

Hey GrandpaBW, you didn't unsderstand my point quite well. If you READ carefully, you'll see I'm not asking for a Cheap Super Burner. I'm just asking for:

A-Cheap burner to share the ripping load with the primary internal one so none of them (or at least the internal one) gets toasted during this "industrial" ripping process.

OR

B-Die-Hard Burner that can take a beating so it can become my primary Burner without me having to worry about durability. I wouldn't expect this kind of burner to be cheap by the way...

Let's see. I re-read the post, and I didn't miss anything except what you were going to share the load with.

It would look like that you didn't make that clear, in your original post. I tried to find mention of sharing the workload with the internal burner, but for the life of me, I can't find that in your original post.
