Can you also list what motherboard make amd model and cpu you are using.
Do you intend to remove the old ram or add to it, if adding what make and model is that.
Also I presume we are talking AGP graphics card if it is an older board, and what do you intend to do with the card (gaming etc...)

some video cards require more power so if your going to get a good video card youll probably need at least a 400-600 watt power supply.sli needs crazy power.agp is not to bad,but remember if you buy a video or graphics card you will most likely have to change the power supply in the computer.hope this helped you

Basically It appears that you have a Sony Vaio desktop PC, with an ASUS motherboard. This motherboard is not driectly supported on the ASUS website, so it looks as though you are bound to Sony.

The board should have 4 memory slots, these can take up to 512MB each, giving a total of 2GB RAM.

If you have 2x 256 which is what I would expect you to have been given you may as well just get 2 of the same again an upgrade to 1GB.

As for the make, either stick to what you have if just adding, or look at something like Corsair, they are about as good as it gets. I would go for XMS range not value range, don't go overboard on latency ability, as you are unlikely to get much tweeking out of the board, even though ASUS boards are generally very obliging, I can't see there system boards being so good.

As for the graphics card, you are looking at either an X800, X850 256MB ATI or 6800GT 256MB NVidia.
You are looking at about £240-£300 for a very good one. Don't go for SE versions, if possible go for PE.

As for makes, I have used ASUS, Connect 3D and sapphire, all have been fine for me with no problems on any.

Check your PSU is man enough for the graphics card, and also has a spare power feed for one of these cards, as they have their own supply same as HDD 4 pin connectors.

thanks for the help. so it means that i can have another 512 of the ram so my memory should be 1gb. so i need to buy two rams of 256 each. i want to know if i get 1 ram of 512.or if i buy 2 more rams of 512 how will it work. it will work or not. and also i m confused about which card i should go with ati or geoforce. currently i have ati.my range for graphics card is 300$. and it matters that that the two rams should exacly be same in make and model.also i want to buy 300gb hard disk .i have to attach it with 160 gb hd. which one should be good.i doesnt have much idea about hardware. so if i want to do it by myself its easy or hard.and these upgrades like graphics card and ram should be compatible with my pc.sorry for that many questions but i dont know about hardware that much.
thanks

you want to see if your pc has dual channel first.then you can buy a kit of ram. ram is memory.the kits come in different flavors:512mb[2x256],1gb[2x512],and the monster 2gb[2x1024]if you dont have dual channel ram.its better to buy 2 of the same of single sided memory but not the kit its only for dual channel.hope this helps.1 gb of ram or 2gb will play most games out there.i heard battlefield 2 is a pc hog.you probably are going to need 2gb of ram

hey man u have a agp slot 4x or 8x.

check out here:

http://shop.spack.net/p/So/ny/Sony+VAIO+PCV+RS530G.B0001BEZ4K.html

you have onboard now 9200 radeon, you need to get a better video card then that for todays games.you have 512mb memory.you need another 512mb ram,but i dont know if its dual channel you will want to buy a 1gb kit of ram if its dual channel.i would buy at least a 6800gt or a x850ati video card.nvidias cheaper and better i think a lot of people will disagree.

you have to call sony to see if its dual channel memory and also what power supply you have[how many watts]

ok,hoped that helped you
