Sorry, I have posted a similar note elsewhere (actually looking for better software), but it looks like I should have posted my question here.

I have recently written a couple of CD-RW discs (just one song on each) and now I am trying to erase them so I can use them again.

My problem is I can't erase them. So far, have used the Windows XP Writing wizard and Nero 6.6 -- neither work. The Writing wizard says it worked, but it didn't -- the song is still there. Nero aborts everytime I try to erase the disks (after 15 (of 120) seconds on a quick erase and after 2 (of 25) minutes into a full erase).

Am I looking at a media problem here (Memorex CD-RW discs) or possibly a CD-ROM problem (LITE-ON drive in Gateway). Anyone else having problems with RW discs, are they worth it.

Let me for a second assume that the software is not the problem.

After all, how high-tech and complicated is an Erase operation -- I mean, how tough can it be. I find it a little hard to believe that these guys (MS and Nero) can't handle an erase operation.

So, considering that, where else could the problem be.

-------
The above aside, have you performed an erase with DVD Encrypter. How long does a full erase take.

I may give them a try. Do you know if they have demo or trial versions -- I could put them in the running for a DVD burning software package I am looking for -- do they do burning -- or rather, what is the main function of DVD Encrypter.

Thanks.

First of all .. the program name is DVD Decrypter

It is a excellent freeware program that decrypts, rips and burns. It is no longer being updated but this only affects the bypassing of the copy protection of certain brand new DVDs.

The disks may be bad. It happens. How many times have you erased those disks before?

Hi Rnsmithad,

I was having the EXACT same problem you are tonight along with the same type of media. I couldn't get my cdrw erased for nothing. I downloaded several programs to see if they would work but they didn't. So I started my research and thank God I found a FREE program that took care of the program. The program is called Super Blank and works wonderfully. Here' the link to the download page for it. http://www.infinadyne.com/download.shtml. The site has been rather slow for some reason so you may have to try a few times.

Good luck,

maybe your problem is in the software you use to burn them. I had a similar problem but mine was with the dvd-rw; they were also memorex.
I burn them with Nero 6 but I couldn't erase them ; I had the same problem as you, so I put mydvd-rws for a year and right now that I try them again they work ,and I couldn't see the problem I have the same burner and the same pc. the only diference is that now I erase them with Nero 7. I only had a problem with one of them but after 3 times it got to be erase completely. may be you want to try nery 7 or may be you want to try something else. Nero 7 woked for me, I hope it works for you too.

newtechie- Nope, Super Blank doesn't work either - nothing works.

I have now tried 1/2 dozen programs to erase my CD-RW discs, and none of them work. There is now some slight damage to the one music file that I have on the disc, because it skips when playing now -- but most of it is intact, because when loaded, a CD player pops up, recognizes the song and start playing it.

I have totally discounted this as a software issue. After trying 6 software solutions, and none work -- it is not reasonable to keep trying additional software. Also, as I have mentioned, how difficult can this mean -- it can't be rocket science to write an erase program, can it

travies06-

Yes, I am now seeing this as a media or recorder problem. I have 3 CD-RWs I have created and none of them erase. The discs are Memorex CD-RWs and they are over a year old, probably older. They write OK, with no errors --just won't erase.

I did buy some new Sonys last week, so I guess I will try them. I hate to keep going through these discs, but I guess that is the only way to narrow down the problem.

Hi Rnsmithad -

You are probably correct about the media. I've had previously problems with Memorex cd-rw discs in the past and I even had to throw away a few. I've used Roxio to erase a couple also but even then it took a numerous of tries. You're probably better off to use your Sony brand. I stopped buying Memorex products a long time ago.

Groooaaanss...MEMOREX..YUK.

I bought a HUGE pack of Memorex discs, RW. I could write to them fine, then when tried to run them, they would not work. Took them back to Best Buy, they would not help, E Mailed Memorex, no response. Called them after getting phone number from Best Buy..I was most irritated. They said probably the store did not house them correctly and they are corrupted. Hmmm..ok, they sent me new discs, same thing. Could NOT get them to erase either. I had tried this in 2 cd/rw drives on my 98 machine, tried in a dvd r/rw drive on my xp machine, then tried in my external cd r/w drive on my lap top. Same results each time. Bought Imation discs, burned disc with same information and worked fine. Tried opening on all of my cd burners and worked fine. A friend then calls me with same problem. Took some Memorex discs to his house and tried burning onto them, same issue and would not erase, popped in Imation disc, burned, opened..worked fine. I chalk it up to Memorex being nasty. Just some food for thought.

~ ~ And the lesson that we all learned from this is:

DON'T BUY MEMOREX DVDs ~ ~ AND IF YOU DO ?? I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT ANYMORE ! !

you'll have better success if you stick a turd in your DVD writer

AnEnigma-

Yes, that is exactly what I am seeing. Discs will no erase on my machine or on my wife's laptop -- however they did record and play OK.

Bad memorex discs is a bummer since about 80% of everything stocked at Best Buy and Comp USA, just to name a couple I visited, is Memorex -- bummer, bummer.

However, I have purchased 3 Sony RWs that I keep saying I am going to try, which I will shortly -- and I will report back here my results.

Thanks for the response, letting me know I am not alone.

AnEnigma- he might have been referring to this thread. Look back one week.

GrandpaBW- Sorry I missed your question. In all cases, this is the first time I have used the discs and the first time I have tried to erase them -- never have had an erase work successfully.

One of the discs had been written months ago, but the last three discs were written on and tried to erase them within days -- one, within the same day.

@AnEnigma: Those are 2 of my grandkids, and I love them more than anything in life.

@Rmsmithad: No problem. I have had DVD+RW discs go bad after 10 or 15 rewrites. :(
