I have read people burning at 12x and 16x and they say they are happy with their burns.
Others will say, if you use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim (Good media) 8x should be ok.
*ME* and several others suggest burning at 4x MAX for video.
It will prevent playback issues, probably help to play on more picky DVD players and provide you a good burn.
This is *MY* opinion !
I have Taiyo Yuden, so burning at 4x is not a problem.
The problem is I have several background tasks that run, which slows the burning process down.
Even if I try to burn at 4x, average speed is always around 3x.something
SO on that note, I could stop all those process if I wanted.
What I do, is put in a DVD-R Media, burn it a 2x and walk away.
All my burns are 100%
Again, this is *MY* opinion :)
Read lots of forums and threads, and make your own opinion.
You might be very lucky and be able to burn those at 8x and have 100% results.

i personally do al my burns at 4x, but have done some at 6x with no visual effect or errors. i may try an 8x burn on a fuji +r s/l and give it a go, i have tons of these disks, so i can spare one.
i burn my 4X media at 4x and my 8x media at 6x ( to be on the safe side) but have had no problem burning them at 8x with my Plextor burner ,lots depends on your machine, burner etc. most important thing is NEVER burn faster than the media is rated and NEVER burn faster than 8X even with 12x or 16x media
some of my buddies/other ppl do 8x, but i only do 4x, a few of the 8x i did caused my probs. i religiously stick to 4x with no multitasking. i've now got an old PC specifically for surfing so that i can kick off burns on main PC without being tempted to touch pc. i multitask loads during ripping process but don't touch pc during the burn
