You'd have a better chance of getting an answer if you posted in the proper forum. This Forum is for DVD media.

I'm not sure if that sony is a rebadged lite-on. Excellent if it was.

I'd take the benq 1640 over that sony any day.Booktyping capability! If you play your backups in a lot of different drives, then definitely the benq. I'm about to order another benq. I've got 2 awesome 1620s,and this 1640 looks sweet!
My 2 cents!

i would DEFINITELY go with the Benq 1640~ :) this Sony you are looking at isn't even listed @ Sony's website for support/firmware upgrades, YES, i KNOW it's an OEM drive, but, c'mon now...why deal with the headache of looking for an obscure drive when the Benq 1640 is so commonly used and supported?

if you MUST get a "Sony" drive, at least get one that is supported on Sony's website...example: Sony dru-710a (which i have and it's a rebadged Liteon SOHW-1633S) blah blah blah...

or, IF YOU INSIST on the Sony name/brand, then get the newest dru-810a, which is IN FACT, a rebadged Benq 1640 with a MUCH heftier pricetag~! same internals, just with fancy Sony logo, bezel, etc.

my 2 cents~

Just some thoughts. Having used two Sony OEM's a DW-U10A (oem of the DRU-500A) and now a DW-Q28A (oem of the DRU-800A)which itself is a Lote-on 1695S. I have had no problems with either one and with good media have worked well. In-fact the only reason I replaced the DW-U10A was that it only would burn at 2.4X The DW-Q28A is a rebadged Lite-on and can be book typed in either Decrypter or using the Lite-on bit setting utility. Usually Sony will release a OEM version of their latest release, so its possible this is a OEM of the DRU-810. Although you can't rely on this and based on spec's it appears it probably is not. Its also possible its another version of a lite-on. I have to admit that the Bneq's are very good drives, but wouldn't dismiss the Sony's either. I really do like my new DW-Q28A particularly the ability to booktype. But it is true finding firmware upgrades are a little more problematic for a OEM, but usually can be done.
