hello,
i've only just signed up, but i've visited this site for some time when in need of suggestions... i know there have been similar topics to this, but i can't find one that answers my problem specifically... any help will be greatly appreciated...

a couple months ago, i bought an AOPEN DUW1616/ARR burner for my computer... when i first installed it, it worked wonderfully... i was using Maxell 8x DVD+Rs, and never having any problems... then a couple weeks ago, i ran out of DVD+Rs and i went to buy some new ones, and i got Memorex 8x, and i noticed that they still worked fine... then maybe a little over a week ago, i burned a DVD+R, and i noticed it played fine on my computer, but when i tried to play it in my stand-alone players (i have 3 different stand-alones, all different brands), it didn't work... i've tried burning through DVD Shrink as well as Nero, but nothing seems to make a difference... i went back and bought another spool of Maxell 8x DVD+Rs - the same kind i had used originally - and still, nothing works... i even went so far as to buy a new DVD recorder, fearing my recorder had gone bad... i bought a LITE-ON SOHW-1693S... but STILL nothing works... it plays on my computer, but not on my stand-alone DVD players...

i noticed in another thread that someone said logs may help with identifying the problem, so i found my log file for Nero... the problem SEEMS to have started around 10/7... here is the entry from 10/7 (minus my serial number)

please, please, PLEASE... any suggestions are greatly appreciated... this is an extremely frustrating situation...

if i had not been able to burn anything from the beginning, that would be one thing, but to have it work for a couple months and then just quit on me, that's killing me! :-/

kvanover,
Your Nero is outdated upgrade to 6.6.0.16. and also upgrade the firmware for dvd writer. Your dvd controller has been set to PIOS and set it back to DMA.
After doing the above, set your dvd writer booktype to dvd-rom that will solve your problems. Please dont use memorex disk becos it sucks.
Buy better media like verbratim or Taiyo Yuden or Fuji Made in Japan and maxell X8 MIJ is equally good.
CdRomPeripheral : E-IDE CD-ROM 40X/AKU atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : AOPEN DUW1616/ARR atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off

Download dvd ddcrypter for this afterdawn
Open it and
select Tools -> Drive -> change book Type -> dvd-rom.

kvanover ,
By the way, are you trying to burn a movie or backup your data.
If your movies are CSS protected you ought to have a software known as AnyDVD to run in the back ground for you in order to burn your dvd disk.
What kind of software are you using besides Nero DVD Shrink?
What is your pc specification?

when i go to Nero.com, it's advertising Nero 7 Ultra Edition... do i wanna upgrade to that? or is the 6.6.0.16 still what i need? if so, where do i find 6.6.0.16?

i had already done this step for the AOPEN drive, but it didn't help... i will look for the upgrade for the LITE-ON burner, as that's the one currently in my system... thanks...

once again, i'm not sure how to do this... i saw another thread that linked a tutorial on how to do this in Nero, but when i went into my copy of Nero, i couldn't find the options that would allow me to do this...

i had previously used DVD Decrypter to get around the CSS issue, but yes, i did get AnyDVD just within the last few weeks (actually sometime close to when this problem started)...

currently, i have Nero, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab Premium, and Apollo DVD Copy... i've tried burning discs with just about all of these, and nothing is working right now...

not sure exactly what you need to know... as the log above says, i'm using Windows 2000 Professional with the latest updates from Microsoft installed... my processor is a little slow (Pentium II 500MHz, 512MB of RAM), but it worked beautifully up until last week... i could try burning at 4x, but once again, it worked fine at 8x before, so i dunno why it just quit on me...

thanks again for the suggestions, and if you could clear up those few issues for me, i'd certainly appreciate it...

Get the latest Nero 6.6.0.16 else you have to pay to go to Nero 7.
Nero7 just released, wait till the bugs are fixed before jumping in.

Booktype a DVD+r/rw so that it fools your standalone player into thinking it is a DVD-rom (the store bought movie), see 'monster18's' reply re DVDdecrypter to do this. You can also set neroburning rom to do this.If you dont use dvd+, then why bother?

The disks you are using are good , just burn at 4X max.

Your free memory is kind of low, shut down unneeded processes with the 'Taskmanager'.
I shut off anti-vir,spyware,IE,and things like firewalls,AnyDVD, etc. Then re-boot after the burn is complete.Let things like DVDshrink, Nero, and the like have all the memory they can.

Don't know about your Liteon burner.Don't change firmware unless there is a reason to do it.Sometimes it's a roll of the dice.

thank you, attar, for your reply... prior to receiving your reply, let me go over what i did last night...

last night, first i enabled DMA using the tutorial i linked above... i wasn't sure if i should set the registry value for UDMA100, UDMA66, or UDMA33, so i selected 100 as my best guess - if anyone knows better, please let me know!

next, i went to Lite-On's official website, where i found the upgrade for my burner's firmware, along with Lite-On's booktype utility... i installed the firmware update, and i TRIED to use their booktype utility, but i don't think the utility worked... they had a disclaimer saying that the utility "may not be compatible with all Lite-On burners" or something like that, which i thought was stupid... the reason i don't think it worked is because after i would tell it to change the booktype, even though it said the change was "successful", when i shut down the utility and restarted it, the Query claimed the booktype was still set to DVD+R...

anyway, i tried again this morning, and the disc i burned still won't play on my stand-alone player...

getting back to attar's post... i will see if i can find instructions for using DVDShrink to change the booktype... i previously had found a tutorial for changing it in Nero, but when i tried in my copy of Nero, the options the tutorial told me to go to weren't avalible in my copy, or else i just couldn't find them... so... i'll keep trying...

also, thank you for the suggestion about memory... i'll give it a try... though i don't see why it would be so much an issue now when it didn't affect me for a couple months previously...

now, to complicate matters... i had a friend of mine burn a copy of a movie for me... he said it played fine on his player at home... he brought it to work, and it played fine on the player at work... when i took it home, it would not play in my nice Sony player, but it would play in my cheap-o Cyberhome player... i also had him try one of the DVDs i burned on my computer recently, and it worked for him at home, worked at work, but will not work on my Sony or my Cyberhome, either one! then i went back and found a DVD i had burned 3 weeks ago, and it plays perfectly on ALL of the DVD players i've mentioned, INCLUDING BOTH my Sony AND my Cyberhome... this makes NO SENSE to me... why would it play SOME burned discs, but not others???

Hi Kvanover,
Older DVD players sometimes have problems playing DVD+R blanks. These can be manually 'booktyped' during recording to DVD-ROM to ensure compatibility, but it will not always work - some old DVD players just don't like DVD+R.
The problem is rarer and rarer though, as time passes almost all new DVD players are aware of DVD+R these days...
If maximum playback compatibility is important to you, the booktype option is possible with most burners ie. Sony/LiteOn, however not with others ie. NEC, so the easiest solution would be to buy some DVD-R blanks :^)
8x burning requires sustained transfers in excess of 10MB/second, which is a lot.
You young guys with P4-3400 as your first PC might not see it that way, but a nice PIII-500 still has a lot of life in it - it just needs to burn @ 4x speed maximum, and it'll be fine.
And yank that CDRom that is Master on your secondary controller - you will be fortunate if you can get them to DMA, with both installed like that... Just pull the CD, and make your burner Master.
Then go get some DVD-R and burn 'em 4x. Fook the booktype.
Let us know if that works better in your DVD players.

You haven't updated Nero.If you do that it should let Nero at least identify the drive.
your firmware looks like it knows the media type, but you are burning at 8x instead of the 4x recomended on this forum.
Your disc from weeks ago was burned on a different drive and yes, it seems that the cost and name of the player does not co-relate to it's quality..

OGS, thanks very much for your suggestions... i'll switch the drives around tonight and try it on 4x... i may have to wait til the weekend to get ahold of some DVD-Rs... but i still don't understand why it worked before and then just quit on me, you know???

attar, i will look and see if i can find Nero 6.6.0.16 as y'all suggested, instead of going to Nero 7... thanks...

also, i thought this might be worth mentioning... a few weeks back, i was having problems even playing burned discs on my computer, and on a whim, i uninstalled PowerDVD and reinstalled it, and it works fine, so day before yesterday, someone suggested i do the same with Nero... i did, but it still didn't help (obviously)... anyway, i don't know why my computer had problems playing DVDs to start with, but i thought maybe that info might be helpful to somebody... i dunno...

anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, guys... i'll let you know how it goes... any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Nero 6.6.0.16
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/n...
If you have the 'right' serial number for it, the Nero MPEG2 codec will be available to you. DVDs will playback in Nero Showtime (and also WMP).
You don't need AnyDVD or PowerDVD or whatever...
My toolkit contains DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, and Nero (that's it.)
Never met a DVD I couldn't shrink, burn, or rip to AVI :^)
There are some new, weird DVDs with protections I have heard...
But I never encountered one yet.
Anyway, uninstalling and re-installing is not always good - it does not contribute to an efficient streamlined Windows registry.

To fix 'haunted' Nero installations:
1) Uninstall all Nero applications; reboot
2) Run Nero registry-cleaner tool, available on their website. Reboot.
3) Install new Nero 6.6.0.16 then (yes) reboot :^)

With all this rebooting, if you run NTFS harddrives you should run the Windows disk check utility. (It informs you that it must run only when your PC is rebooted).
Start > My Computer > highlight drive > right-click > properties > Tools > Error Checking
Tune up your PC lean & mean; run Spybot S&D and Lavasoft AdAware.
Empty both Temp directories. Defrag drives.
Lose the CDRom (no 'switching around'). Two optical drives on 1 controller may not DMA correctly. Brand new CDRoms are all of $19 bucks (but who's gonna buy one!?) Get rid of it - pull it out.
You can burn DVDs that are top-quality and will easily play on any DVD player ;^)

thanks, OGS... i'll follow those steps you listed...

i've kept PowerDVD just because i like the interface... i know DVD Decrypter works for getting around CSS... the only reason i went and got AnyDVD was so that i could watch some R2 DVDs i have on PowerDVD...

i've been hanging onto that old CDRom for years because i like it, but maybe it's time to give it up... i may try switching them around first, and if i'm still having problems, i'll take it out and see if that does any good...

anyway, yes, i'll try to clean up my computer, free up as much space as i can, etc., and follow those steps and let you know where i stand after that...

Cheers!

btw, was i right (above) when i set that registry entry to EnableUDMA100 ??? or should i have gone with something smaller (66 or 33)?? or should i maybe go back and just delete that entry altogether??

i did notice that when i tried to burn a disc after enabling DMA that it took MUCH less time than ever before, but i don't know if that's necessarily a good thing or not, and i couldn't find out since it still gave me the same error when i tried to play on my Sony standalone... guess i could try it on my computer and see how it plays there...

UPDATE: ok, OGS, i followed all of your suggestions... i uninstalled Nero, i ran the Nero registry cleaner, i installed the 6.6.0.16 version, i ran the drive error check, i ran disc cleanup, i ran Spybot, i ran AdAware, i ran defrag, i made the DVD burner the Master, i ditched the extra CD-ROM, i made sure background programs were at a minimum (no anti-virus, no AnyDVD, no Pop-up blocker, etc.), and i burned at 4x...

i tried to use LITE-ON's Booktype utility, but it doesn't seem to have worked... also, at the time that i uninstalled the first version of Nero i had, i also uninstalled other unnecessary DVD-related programs such as DVD Fab and Apollo DVD Copy, which i don't think i have any need for...

the results this time were different, but not better...

i didn't have time to see if it ran on my computer at home, but i tried it in the Sony standalone, as well as in the Cyberhome... the Sony player gave me the usual "Cannot play disc due to area limitations" error it's been giving me with everything else i've burned the last couple weeks now... this time, however, the DVD actually LOADED in the Cyberhome! but don't get too excited... the menu came up, and i noticed the audio was skipping a little, but that was ok... i hit Play, and the movie started, but the picture was terribly distorted with all this green stuff, and the audio was so choppy you couldn't make anything out, and after about 10-15 seconds, it just froze...

i brought the DVD with me to work to test, because previously DVDs that wouldn't load at home would still load on the cheap-o player they have at work... this time, however, when i put the disc in, it just says, "Loading..." forever, and never actually loads the disc... i tried turning the player off, ejecting the DVD, etc. several times, nothing makes a difference...

the only suggestion i haven't taken yet was attar's suggestion that i switch to DVD-Rs instead of DVD+Rs... as i said before, it may be the weekend before i'm able to get to the store to pick those up - if i pick those up - but having already spent $30 on DVD+Rs that don't work, i'm kinda reluctant to buy DVD-Rs if i'm not 100% confident they'll work...

the only other thing i know i might be able to toggle is the registry entry i mentioned above... maybe if i switch that down to UDMA66 or UDMA33, that might help??? i have no idea...

i'm tempted to put the AOPEN drive back in and see if there's any difference between that and the LITE-ON... at least the AOPEN was working for 2 months before everything went wrong... i haven't gotten one usable burn out of the LITE-ON yet...

in case it might help at all, here's the latest Nero History log for your analyses...

- are you unable to get the booktype setting working ?, that's the reason i returned two 1693S's as faulty and went to LG drives myself recently..

- get rid of Roxio, plus to fully remove it you may need to google search for 'Roxio Zapper'

why would Roxio be a problem? and if it is a problem now, why wasn't it a problem for the months when everything worked fine???

just curious...

but yes, to answer your other question, as i said before, i can't get the Booktype utility to work...

wonder if i should go back to the AOPEN drive, but if i do, how do i try to change the Booktype then???

re Roxio - i'm just offering basic troubleshooting advice. we just go thru the logfile and attack everything that is either wrong or flags up as potentially worth trying..and keep going 'til the problem's either solved or at least pinpointed

Yes, good calls Creaky :^)
Also, I would disable Nero's caching of the DVD files to be burned.
(It will offer to cache files dragged over from CDRom, but caching of DVD files already on your harddisk is redundant.)
You need 512MB memory - WinXP likes lots, and is leaving you only 157MB.
You should be able to set DVD+R booktype to DVDRom from within Nero. Look for it at the bottom, I believe, when you open a Nero tab labeled 'more'...
Make sure you are selecting 'DVD-Video' from Nero, not DVD-Rom (ISO) or whatever, LoL (I'm just saying...)
I would put the 2 ticks back in place, relaxing the ISO restrictions.
Then concentrate on booktyping those +R blanks from within Nero.
And WTF, just grab some DVD -R blanks (cheap) 5-pack or whatever, or borrow some, just to see.
I think you're almost in good shape now, and have accomplished a lot. A little fine-tuning & you will be there...

i still can't find anywhere in Nero that offers me the ability to change the Booktype... here's what i'm doing... i hopen Nero StartSmart; set it to DVD; under Photo and Video, i select "Burn DVD-Video Files"... i have a blank DVD+R already in the drive, so before adding any files, i clicked "More >>" at the bottom... that gives me the option to change the time settings (not relevent) or i have buttons for "Configure", "Save Tracks", "Erase Disc", "Disc Info", and "Cover Design"... i sifted through each of those sections and never found anything about setting the Booktype... the closest i got was under "Disc Info" where it actually says, "Book Type: DVD+R", but it's nothing i can select or change... it's just telling me that's what i have...

so i didn't do anything there, and i went ahead and added my video files as normal... after doing that, i tried looking under "More >>" again, but nothing had changed, so i clicked "Next", which took me to hte "Final Burn Settings" page... to the right of the menu that shows my burner drive, there's an "Options" button, but there's no option for changing the Booktype there... currently, my other "Recorder Options" are set as follows: "SMART-BURN enabled" has a check next to it, "DVD high compatibility mode (at least 1GB will be written)" has a check next to it, and "Write extended lead-out on double layer discs" does NOT have a check next to it... those are all the options it gives me there, so i hit Cancel to go back...

at the bottom of the "Final Burn Settings" page, there is another "More >>" button, so i tried it out... i can select "Determine maximum speed", "Simulate", or "Write"... only "Write" is selected... beneath that, i have the same buttons as i had with the "More >>" section on the previous page, but once again, there is no option for setting the Booktype under any of these buttons...

am i missing something????????

have you looked in 'Recorder/Choose Recorder/Options' - that's where booktype option should be, but if it's not there that's the same problem i had - with 2 different drives - one was dated June 05 i think the other was August 05 - but after 2 drives refusing to booktype/show options to booktype (even in official Lite-on utility) i gave up and returned both 1693S's as faulty and switched to LG. now i'm booktyping like a good 'un again :)

I cant find it either, but I will tell ya what. I use lite on utility cause I have a 1693 burner.

Its easy. Just click the booktype 135 icon. Up comes the utility. Insert disc. Then push query. Now go too the third box change booktype to....

click it and select dvd-rom. Now push change. All done. If it dont work...then contact lie on or your seller for a replacement before your warranty expires. But there book type utility does work. You could also use dvd decryptor to change book type to..

Open up decryptor Select tools....then drive....then change book type. Then select the make of ya burner. Then insert disc and choose whether you ya just want to change booktype for next media only or whatever. Then choose new setting for dvd rom. Then change.

There is also a third utility floating round you can find on google to change book type. From what I noticed the lite on utility only changes the book type for the current disc in the burner...not for every disc of that brand. So you need to use the utility every time. Unless ya use decryptor to change it permanetly for that brand

But if it dont work...then rma it before ya warranty expires....

Also dont feel bad. I cant find change booktype under nero either and Im working with a clean install of everything...:>

Also once you do get the booktype to change you will notice a diff in quality. My burned discs will play in my stand alone but with green blobs. But it wont play in the ps2. Now I can change book type since I got this burner...i still get green blobs in the stand alonme...but they play flawlessy in the ps2. So the book type does help tremendously. But as for my stand alone its another problem and I just dont think it likes burned discs.....cause it plays blockbuster just fine..:>

well i HOPE that's just a problem with YOUR standalone, because MY standalone USED to play EVERYTHING, and i certainly don't want green blobs now!

i've already tried (and failed) with the LITE-ON utility... i'll see if i can find what you're talking about in DVD Decrypter... if not... aaarrrggghhh!!! ...maybe i'll try the AOPEN drive again if i can't get it to work with Decrypter...

EDIT: i found the option in DVD Decrypter, but i don't think it worked, because after i told it to change it to DVD-Rom, it didn't even take a split second before it said "Success!" but i never saw any activity in Decrypter's log, and up where it lists media type, it never switches it to say DVD-Rom... still says DVD+R, even if i close and reopen the tool or if i check it in Nero...

also i noticed that DVD Decrypter's tool doesn't seem to support an AOPEN drive...

time to scour Google for this 3rd utility, i guess...

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
