i think i've figured out why Nero's letting us down here... according to http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0&sid=2&aid=44, the option to change Book Type in Nero is only for DVD+RW discs... it won't work with regular ole +Rs...

see, according to them, if you have an +RW in, when you go to Disc Info in Nero, it'll look like this...

but when i have a regular ole +R in, this is all i see...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v412/kyvan/NoBookTypeAdjustment.jpg

see the difference???

thankfully that site also has the link to download this 3rd program, which FROM THEIR DESCRIPTION sounds like it might work, so i'm gonna give it a whirl...

HA! i think it IS my LITE-ON drive that is the problem!

when i use that 3rd utility, i click on "Check Settings", and i get a message saying "Unable to determine drive settings! You have either selected the wrong drive, a incompatible one (Sony drives) or you are using a 1st generation drive (DVD+RW only). These drives are incapable of returning current settings, ignore this message." ...then when i change the settings to DVD-ROM and select "Set for current disc", i get another error message saying "Can't manipulate Book Type on DVD+R media, use 'DVD+R' option" ...so i know it's the burner that's the problem, because neither of the other two utilities did anything, and this 3rd one seems to be blaming the burner...

i'm off to reinstall my AOPEN drive now, to see if i can get it to work!

GAH!!!

i reinstalled the AOPEN burner, tried that 3rd utility again, but alas! different error message, same effect... i tried with 2 different blank Maxell 8x discs, but when i click the "Check Settings" button, i get a message saying "Failed to read DVD structure. Either you have selected the wrong drive or you have a incompatible one (Sony drives)." ...and if i try to set it on DVD-Rom and "Set for current disc", i get the same "Can't manipulate Book Type" message i got with the other burner!

this is really aggravating!

AALLRRIIGGHHTT!!!!

ok, i removed Roxio from my computer (using the Roxio Zapper - though the Drives you quoted when you caught that still seems to be listed in the log)...

also - and perhaps more importantly - i found that with the AOPEN drive (unlike when i had the LITE-ON drive installed), when i go into Nero, on the "Final Burn Settings" page, when i click "Options" next to the drive, it DOES give me the ability to change the Book Type!!! so i set it for DVD-ROM... i made sure as many processes as possible were disabled, and i tried burning at 4x... i STILL couldn't get the DVD to work in either my Sony or my Cyberhome standalone players... BUT i DID get it to work in a standalone Emerson DVD Burner! so we're MAKING PROGRESS, if nothing else!

i still don't know what the problem is, because like i said, up until a couple weeks ago, everything loaded in the Sony perfectly! and i can still play things that i burned back then! that's the crazy thing! i'd think if it was gonna reject newly burned discs, it would reject the older ones too!

anyway, just in case it's helpful, here's the Nero History log for this latest burn...

RMA the drive!. i told ya, i tried about 3 different utils on two different 1693S's for this and wasted a lot of time on it. i got real unlucky to have 2 drives do the same thing but once i went LG all is back to normal. must be some bad batches i s'pose..

yeah, i noticed the Roxio stuff is still there too, but didn't look any more at the logfile this time, was more concerned with commenting on the lite-on drive needing replacing...

@kvanover

To get rid of Roxio go here http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/store/15199 and run it to wipe out Roxio from your system. After that use "regedit" to search for any left over and delete anything that's related to Roxio.

Since your copy is skippy and does not skip in the same place, I do not think you have been given much good advice. Your problem is not with the burn process. Computer readers are often read better than players. The fact that it reads OK with the computer means you are burning a readable copy. I would not waist anymore time looking at the burn process even if it might be improved a little. Your player is the problem. Try getting a lens cleaner. It is a disk with a tiny metal brush on it. If cleaning does not help you need a new player if you want to play burned DVDs on it. Buy one some where it is easy to take it back. Price is no indication on whether the disk will read burned disks well. Often the cheapest with no extra feature do the best. Keep the one that works!

@Mez - when a problem like this crops up - it's common sense to trawl thru the logs/settings to make sure everything's up to date/set correctly, then check other stuff as otherwise it's too easy to miss the obvious and fix something temporarily..only to have the same problem or more problems bite you in the bum, so i disagree that we're giving bad advice.

as to cleaning drives, good idea, but for me i'm one of those paranoid types, i myself had a burner problem recently and wouldn't have trusted it again ever after cleaning. however if it's a reader, ie a standalone player, i'd be more trusting of it working well after a clean. but that's just me, i'm paranoid about burners

that makes no sense, because it's 2 separate players that won't play the more recently burned DVDs, but both players still play the ones i burned 3 weeks or more ago... also, with this most recent burn, it did play in a 3rd standalone player fine, but still not in the other 2 players...

i'm not sure how to make much sense out of these outcomes, but i think we're probably on the right track with it being a burn issue, but who knows...

if in doubt, just do 'simulation burns' thus not wasting any disks. then you get a logfile section and we can tral thru it to make sure ou're all set..
