I got a DVD burner 'PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104' with my pc. It suppose to do the read and burn part with no problem. But somehow, its becomes unable to burn anymore. Its started like couple days ago. My drive can still read a common CD or DVD, just cant burn disc. I hope anyone could give me any solution, advise or suggestion. Greatly appreciate for any help...
*p.s. If I am gonna buy an external CD/DVD burner, how much would that be ,and, is it connect to the hard disk with USB ? or cable?

Here's some burning result, with the error which i have no idea..
With Alcohol 120%:

Burn process failed at 4x

"power calibration error"...can be possibly a few factors, OR might be just one...

go here to read up on it:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/FAQs_Error_Messages.html

what kind of media are you currently using? meaning brand and rated speed/format? on MANY occasions, if you are using cheap/poor quality media, your drive will report this error...also, is your firmware up to date? could be quite a few things actually~ check for your version of firmware here, the firmware varies if you have an OEM pioneer, or one that came in a Sony computer, etc..etc..

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=298

need a lil bit more info to help you further~

Usually poor media or a failing drive on those power calibration errors. Can you post entire log, including how your DMA's are set?

I'm not up on the external DVD-RW drives, but If I had no more room in my tower and that was my only route: I'd go with a quality internal drive like a plextor/benq 1640/Lite-on/or LG along with an external case. Some of those regular external burners are less compatable on stand alones. Those I listed are capable of booktyping which may come in handy if you run accross any stand alones that don't like a particular format off your drive.

Price: I know the Benq 1640 is around $38 including UPS at newegg.com becuase I just ordered one last night. External enclosures will run $20-$40 also at newegg.com.

Benq also makes an external drive which is basically a 1640. You may want to google for Benq on the price of that drive.

First of all, i am pretty sure every images/media i had try is clean. Because before my drive died, i had successfully burn the same media couple times for my friends with no error. Plus, the burner cant burn nothing right now. No matter what the media, brand of CD or method i used.

To kivory666 :
What is a firmware?? I am pretty much a newbie on that :P

I am planning to buy an external because i am not familiar with inner part of CPU. I try to avoid from bisecting the whole thing unless I have no other way.

I got a sight of a burner in store yesterday. External, burn speed for DVD is 16x. Does it worth 100 bucks?

This is the log for Alcohol 120%, pretty long, i hope it wouldn't be a disturbance for anyone. Please note if the log from Nero is needed.
Thanks~

hi,

i am unfamiliar with Alcohol logs, but one thing regarding "firmware" that i did notice was THIS :
Quote:
Vendor Identification: PIONEER
Product Identification: DVD-RW DVR-104
Production Revision Level: 1.30
YOUR "firmware" for this pioneer drive is very old, use the link i gave you above to "update" the firmware...you currently are using revision 1.30, and the newest one is 1.41, i have linked it DIRECTLY here:

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/media/downloads/r4fw141.zip

(might have to copy and paste for that to start the download OR if that doesn't work, go to the link i gave you above regarding firmware and click on the "1.41" and the download will automatically start)

save the .zip file to your harddrive and then use any program that will "unzip" the file (winzip, WinRAR, etc) and follow the step by step instructions on how to "flash" your drive, it's very straight forward actually, but, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT SHUT/TURN OFF your computer during the flashing process or it COULD destroy your drive~ just a word of warning...

also,
Quote:
18:30:51 (F:) PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104(1:0) - [Write ERROR], LBA: 304, Length: 16
S:KEY - 05/2C/00 - "Command Sequence Error"
18:30:51 (F:) PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104(1:0): Recording failed!
18:30:51 Error message: [05/2C/00] - Command Sequence Error
something is wrong here, as i stated, i have never used the Alcohol 120% program before, but a quick google states this error, at least for this guy, was resolved when he tried this guy's suggestion of "Could you try without using Simulation and also try lowering your Burning Speed." it seemed to be resolved as he replied, "with the simulation mode off it works well."

i THINK you should try to lower the burn speed too, i'm not sure, but it seems like it's "trying" to burn @8x, i might be wrong, but this is what i can guess according to your log
Quote:
18:30:17 (F:) PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104(1:0): Recording Method/Speed
18:30:17 Recording - DAO / SAO - 8X (1200 KB/Sec)
not sure what else to suggest as i never used Alcohol 120% before..but, the firmware DEFINITELY needs updating

good luck

docTY~

I had try the update link, but after i download and unzip it, i run it. It said 'Available target is not found'. Do I have to unzip the file in specific directory? This is the default path:
C:\DVRA04\FW141

Besides, what is "with the simulation mode off it works well" ? I don't think i can turn this function off~~

And, i used to burn at 8x, it shouldn't be a problem. But i will still try to low down the speed, i will reply if i success.
Thanks~
