I have this problem with F.E.A.R, when i start the game i see nothing but a black screen (I hear the sounds though), after few seconds the game cursor appears(nothing else) and when I move it i hear sounds which occur when I place the cursor on a menu item.

I have Geforce 6600gt with newest drivers.
Athlon XP 3000+

something getting to hot.either processor or graphics card.ill bet it the graphics card.

while playing, run for a little, let the pc scream for like 5 mins.set up your temp setting ,on nvidia it is easy to do, leave on desktop.then while your playing alt & tab to drop to desktop.read temps probably over 50 c.will make the game chrash anything above like 60 c.if it is getting hot and you dont want to mod it.take side off and place a fan blowing at video card.do the same thing if that does not lower the temp.you are going to have to buy a after market cooler for that card.hey look at that game there is so much going on its worth the extras just to see that awesome stuff.hey by the way, call of duty 2 came out today, unbelieveable, awesome like fear, also quake 4 is pretty neat too.hope this helped

My problem is solved. It was because of Service Pack 2 which I uninstalled and now it works almost fine, but sometimes it just crashes for no reason.
