Hello,

I have been burning DVD-R's with my Liteon 411s using Nero 6. I have burned over 50 movies using ritekG04 media. All of a sudden the DVD burner IDE drive stopped recognizing the DVD-Rs. It started off as a eractic problem but now is permanent. Has anyone had this problem?

I tried 3 different type of DVD-r media and when I put the media in, Windows XP does not recognize the media at all. I am still able to read DVD movies and burn CD-Rs. I have the latest firmware installed from Lite-on's website. Does a DVD burner suddenly stop recognizing media?

Please help.

That's a really old burner. Tbe latest firmware is FSOK. Is that the firmware you have? It can also be flashed to be a model 811. Of course all this voids the warranty but the drive is 2 years old anyway.

Thanks. I already have the latest firmware as you said. Is it possible the burner just gives up? Why upgrade to 811s? What will that do? Thanks for your help.

vinny121,
I think the life span of your burner had reached its limit.
I have this problem before and I know it very well.
It's time you get another burner.
I would highly recommend BenqQ 1640 burner so far the best less problematic unless you got a default dvd burner or else it is near to perfect with the latest firmware.

Is it possible that I bought it used? I purchased this online that said it was OEM (no retail box). The DVD burner that you recommended, where did you purchase it? Do you recommend an OEM or retail? Why does a DVD burner not recognize blank dvds but will recognize dvd movies? Is there any diagnostic software that could prove that it is the DVD burner?

The one that read dvd movies and do not copy is called dvd rom and not dvd writer. They are two different things my dear.

Hey vinny121,

I have the exact same burner model on my PC, the Lite-On LDW-411S. I also had the exact same problem as you did, regarding not being able to burn or read certain disc types. It would only read certain brands, and then it would stop reading data completely and force my PC to freeze.

As laddyboy said, make sure you have the latest firmware.

The way that I fixed the problem was that I did a refresh of Windows XP from the Windows install disc, and refreshed the operating system. This corrected some of the registry keys, which along the way got themselves "re-arranged" from using various programs. After the reboot, all was well and the burner worked flawlessly.

So give that a shot, if you have the XP disc. It worked for me.

Thanks. I'll try redoing the OS. Good to hear you fixed the burner. I once installed SP2 and it hosed my pc causing the blue screen. I had to do windows restore and it was ok. Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes.

vinny121,
Can I know what OS are you using? If you are using windows xp home with sp2 then when the problems come in. SP2 with windows home edition had some issues with some of the software and causes them to malfunction. I have this problems before and when I convert to windows xp pro with sp2 problems solved.
Hope it will help you. If you are using windows home edition do not install sp2 if you want your software to function properly.

Hey vinny121,

Yeah give the XP refresh a go. I'm not quite sure if SP2 will cause a conflict as henryting said, but for me SP1 on Windows XP Pro, did the job and fixed the problem. Once all is fixed then you can upgrade to SP2. I done this and my burner is functionally flawlessly.
Let us know how it goes.

Hello all,

Thanks for the replies.

I reinstalled windows xp pro and then upgraded to sp2. Unfortunately, the dvd burner still does not read DVD-R's. I also have the latest firmwar FSOK or whatever is on liteon site. I am not sure what to do know. I can read DVD movies and I could burn cds but no DVD-Rs. I lost my faith in Liteon, time to move on to a different DVD burner. I can't believe a burner gives up after a year of usage. It sucks.

vinny121,

Shame to hear you are still stuck with the same problem. May I ask, have you tried using a different burning program for DVD's... such as trying to burn a disc image with DVD Decrypter, or it's new friend Imgburn?

As jackthe mentioned, it could be a thing with Nero. Perhaps the ASPI update as he suggested may do the trick.

I've found that this burner will burn onto just about all brands of media DVD+R and DVD-R's, but I have discovered a few "cheaper" no-name brands to be very un-reliable when it comes to burns.
