i'm in the philippines on vacation. got my slim ps2 modded for about $50 US and it's been working great;godfather, black, 24, Tomb Raider Legend, Kingdom Hearts II, etc...

It might be tough finding a site that has premodded NTSC-Jap consoles, at least in the US. I have no idea where to get started there, and I'd recommend you get a NTSC US system, unless you need the NTSC Jap PS2 to get online in your region.

does anyone know if chips like the matrix infinity even work with JPN systems?

Yes it works on all region systems like the DMS 4 Pro SE and Crystal Chip 1.1. Read my modchip FAQ, it'd be silly not to.
