I got two games which both should work (or at least i think they should work), but they're not working. I burned them on Ridata DVD-Rs. Burnout Revenge it goes to the first loading screen, but doesn't load anything at all, and makes no progress. Soul Calibur 3 just doesn't boot up at all, infact it takes me to the PS2 Browse screen for some reason. I'm trying to play these using the Swap/flip top method, using Swap Magic...think it's version 2.0 or 3.0. Anyone else have trouble getting these to run via the swap method? Thanks for reading.

Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R using DVD Decrypter: http://home.earthlink.net/~moderator/id3.html. Soul Calibur 3 has caused a lot of people problems. SMD 2.0 blows, 3.0 I'm not sure about. You may want to update to SM 3.6.

Thanks for the reply.

Don't think i have any 8X dvd-rs laying around, do i certainly have to have one or should i try burning 4x on a 4x? Any idea about burnout? Same situation?

How much cash does the latest version(s) of swap magic cost? What advantage do they have over older versions?

Try burning at 2x on a 4x DVD-R. If that fails try 4x. The latest version of SMD 3.6 is compatible with every PS2 game after rebuilding. It alleviates the need for CD loader, DVD loader, or cogswap loader. It doesn't support DVD-9 or dual layer games. Those can be rebuilt to DVD-5 or single layer DVD-R's. Some games over 4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with SM 3.6. Only about 5% of PS2 games need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic 3.6.

Check my earlier post. Burn at 1x on 4x DVD-R's.

Still can't get these to work. The files i'm burning should be fine. My burner has worked recently so i don't think it's faulty. I only have DVD-Rs currently (Riteks). Only tried to burn both of them twice, but both times the same things happened. With Burnout it gets to the first load screen but doesn't load at all, with SC3 it just takes me back to the PS2 browser (which shows memory cards and disc). I don't know what the prob is. Burned them at 1x speeds both times.
Using Swap Magic 3.6 now also.

Anyone have any ideas?

Speed it up to 2x. If that doesn't work, try rebuilding.

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. Games over 4.38GB's will need rebuilt. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515

Still didn't work. I guess i'll try the rebuild thing on both of them. Is it possible they just don't work on a version 2-3 PS2?

Certainly. Version 1-3 PS2's don't read backups well. Most mod sites won't even touch them. Rebuild and burn at 2x and see if that helps.

I had the same problems that you mention as well as skipping and lockups and through trial and error found that backing up games at low speeds such as 1x, 4x etc. just didn't agree with my dvd burner. I backup all my games at max speed and haven't had a single problem since. It might not work for you, but I can only suggest you give it a try. Good luck.

I've heard similar things about newer burners. There are few universal rules for burning PS2 DVD games. It all depends how new your burner is, what type of burner you have, and what type of media you use. I'll find out since I'm getting a new DVD burner for Xmas.

Bump again. Can someone just confirm for me that neither of these games work with swap magic, that way i can stop trying to get them to work. I'm pretty sure they just don't work with swap magic, any version.

Well Soul Calibur III works fine with a modchip. I don't know about Swap Magic, search a little. Have you tried all three methods of rebuilding?

With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.

1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.

Make sure you do it in that order.

This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.

Does it make a difference if you burn the PS2 backup as a UDF/ISO rather than just as an ISO? If it does what is the difference between these two options?

The UDF/ISO option is for burning rebuilds of the game. I.E. all the individual game files, not the iso itself. Burning the Iso is just for that, burning an iso file.

Yeah these burns just don't like me, tried burnout 4 times now, same result every time, shows the first loading bar and nothing happens. I'm wondering if it's my burner or if i have to use 8X dvds or something. I have a feeling i'm never going to get either of these to work though, just like God of War, could never get that to work, i think my PS2 just doesn't like burns.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Actually I've since learned that v.1-3 PS2's can read backups as well, the reason most mod sites don't touch them is the mobo design. It's 4 motherboards stacked on top of each other, and it must be dissambled piece by piece in order to solder the chip in. It's real pain in the arse, apparently it takes 3 times as long to mod as v.4 PS2's and later, which have a single mobo design. I'd try some High quality Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media. Ritek is decent, but it doesn't compare to those two. You can Verb's and TY's for cheap at http://www.supermediastore.com

4x is cheaper. I get TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden's, as I like to burn at 4x. They're both excellent quality, it's really just a matter of user preference. These are what I burn on: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-...

It may be the fact that I am using SM 3.6 but all I ever do to burn a game is throw it through Nero EXPRESS. Sometimes I have to mount the image, like with Daemon Tools or the like. but both of those have worked for me.

That's good, but in general DVD Decrypter is the most simple way to backup PS2 games. For certain things, like adjusting the write method for CD games or rebuilding games, you'll need to use Nero Burning ROM instead of Nero Express. Burning ROM offers a level of customization that knowledgable users can benefit from.
