What's with all the garbage files, e.g. on "Lost" discs?

I've been backing up my copies of the first season of "Lost." There seems to be more garbage on these discs than on any other I've backed up. By garbage, I mean a ton of extra files in "Menus" and in "Extras." If you look at them in DVD Shrink, you'll see, for example, under "Extras": Title 2 with a length of 00:00:00, Title 6 with 00:00:00, Title 7 with 00:00:00, Title 8 with 00:00:04 but it's 4 seconds of black space, etc. LOTS of files with nothing in them at all. What I've done is change them all to "still images," but boy, it's a pain to have to look at each one and make sure it really DOESN'T have anything in it.

My question isn't about how to back up these discs -- I've been able to do that successfully -- but rather what all these empty files are. Does anyone know? Do they DO anything? Are they some new form of copy protection that would screw up my back-up if I left them as they are instead of changing them to still images? I'm just more curious than anything else.

thanks,
Karen H.

Heres what i do Karen,

Fire up DVDDecrypter, and select ALL the files, and rip em to a folder. Use DVD Shrink and select full disc>open files, and select the folder the Lost was ripped to, and select an out put folder and let it shrink.

No, those files dont do anything, just leave em. I got perfect backup's of this season.

Also, it lets you keep your menu functions intact.

Thanks for the reply but I already know how to do the back-ups and all my menu functions ARE intact -- i.e., I don't lose any functionality or any menus taking out the garbage files. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

My question is more just out of curiosity as to what all the files are DOING there. Anyone?

thanks,
Karen H.

I would like to know the answer to that question also, Karen.

Evry now and then I backup a dvd that has like 20 subtitle boxes with all 0 (zero) mb. I have often wondered about this so now that you have brought it up. Maybe someone can tell both of us.

The "nothing" files show up in CloneDVD too. I just ignore them but you are more curious than me!

Try putting the original disk into your DVD player and press the player's remote control button entitled "Title/Group" (so labeled on my JVC, but your brand player may have a dif label for the button) followed by the number for the TS you are curious about. See if anything plays.

Does Windows Explorer show anything other than regular DVD files? It may be DVD-ROM or internet features or one of those autoload features that we avoid backing up.

I have also noticed that when DVD authoring companies accept a contract from a movie or TV studio, all that will be included on the DVD has not been finalized by the studios yet. So they create some title-sets in anticipation for what might be requested near production time. When it comes time for the final mastering, the anticipated features are changed ie the original specs change but they just leave the empty TS's there anyway.

Best regards,
Whisperer

Ahhh, Whisperer - that sounds like the answer to our curiousities *S*

Of course - when I am in shrink - I have my auto subtitle to check English anyway so I dont even have to deal with that mess *L* It sure looks junkie though.

I just had a question, if it is 0 seconds why do you care. It's not like leaving those files in will require more compression. It's like teh audio streams with 0MB, jsut leave they don't matter.

No care or matter at all. Like karen2003 said

I think it has more to do with poorly authored/produced DVDs than copy protection. They are just empty chapters, but sometimes, the movie will skip to those chapters. This is problematic if you split the disc onto 2 DVDs because you DVD player may look for a chapter which is on the 2nd disc. If you are not sure, you can test on a DVD+RW, but I figured it doesn't hurt to throw them in sometimes.

Thanks for the replies. I WAS just curious because "Lost" in particular seemed to have so many more of the "junk files" than anything else I've looked at. Maybe it's a new trend.

And thanks, Whisperer, for responding to someone who I guess didn't read all the way back to the start to find out why I was asking this in the first place!

Glueater - if you read the original posts - you would not need to make that statement - ya know - you dont HAVE to reply to a thread if you are uninterested in what is being discussed. No one even asked about compression anyway.

Whisperer, thank you for that reply - reading truly is fundamental *L*

Dogbomb - thanks for the extra tips you added - I have never had a problem with those empty files because I just uncheck the boxes anyway.

They're very likely just put there to hold commands. There are really 4 possible reasons for seeing things like this.

1. The person authoring the DVD wanted to make it difficult to re-author it when backing up, and added a bunch of commands in strange places. I think this is the most likely explanation since I'm pretty sure Lost is from Buena Vista Entertainment, which is a division of Disney, and Disney DVDs are notoriously bizarre like that.

2. The person authoring the DVD didn't know what they were doing and spread commands all over the disc in places they don't need to be. I never discount this possibility but that usually involves unnecessary blank menus, not actual titles.

3. The person authoring the DVD found that to be the easiest way to organize the command structure being used. Assuming these aren't blank menus this is once again very unlikely since that's where most commands are put.

4. The authoring program being used puts them there because that's how it authors certain command structures. Probably not the case here because that's usually reserved for adding a single unused menu to titlesets with no real menus so they have a VTS_XX_0.VOB file.
