how to delete .bak and .dat files

i know this doesn't belong here, but i couldn't find a place to post about it. how do i delete .bak and .dat files, because they keep coming back and they unwanted. again, sorry for posting it here, but i would be grateful if someone could tell me or link me somewhere that tell me how to do this.

Right click on them, and select delete. If they come back, you may have a virus.
What program creates the files. The program may create them every time you save a file, unless you change the options in the program, so they don't back up the original, every time you re-save the file that you are working on.

that's the thing, they keep recreating themselves. i downloaded bearshare just to see what it was like, and then i deleted it,, and now they wont stop coming back, they even create their own folder on my desktop.

Download and run Spybot search and destroy and adaware. If you dont have a good antivirus get one too.

McAfee is fine, that's a more than capable antivirus solution, but it won't notice spyware, so It'd be best to try Lavasoft Ad-Aware or maybe AVG.

ad aware doesn't detect them, i ran it. right now i'm going to try Spybot and see if it works.

Rename them to anythinguwant.dat or blahblah.bak and then delete, they shouldnt come back ;)

I don't think it's a case of them not deleting, it's just that they come back. When the malicious program creating them runs, it'll check to see if they're there. If they aren't It'll make them again, regardless of what they were named when deleted.

Download and run a program called Hijackthis. Run it and past the log file into a PM and PM me. I will look it over and let you know what to remove. I do malware removal on the side.

thanks, but so far Spybot worked. if they come back (which they haven't yet and they usually do by now) i'll try it.

Good to know that Spybot fixed that for you. I like to use both programs in tandem, because one will catch what the other misses. I have been installing AVG on most of the computers that I fix. It cataches things that Norton and McAffe miss. Let me know if you need any more help. BTW what did Spybot catch?

i don't remember what the name of the files were, they were hotkey thing (my apologies, i'm not very computer literate) and it said something in them was making mcafee bypass them, and i deleted them and waalaa.

Just remember to update them weekly! I tell all my clients to update and run them on a regular schedule.
