Ok thanks for all the tips,
now, are you sure I should put it on the heatsink and whipe it off?

I only ask because I found the instructions online, and for that step in red it says
"For Arctic Silver 1, 2 and 3:"

and then finally at step 7 it says
"For ALL Arctic Silver versions:"

AND lastly, is there any really important reason why I should use 99% isopropyl alcohol? I only have 50% in the house, of course it wouldn't be too big of a deal to go out and get 99%, but it's just a question afterall.

you know what,i never really looked at a bottle of rubbing acohol before to see the potincy of the acohol before.i just looked at mine and it was 70 percent.never had any problems before with this new build or my old pc,or the one before that.dont know for sure.i always clean both and then let it sit to dry for about a half hour to make sure there are no deposits of anything on my stuff.to tell you the truth,i do the artic silver different, then the experts do it.i put a thin layer of stuff on the processor and the heatsink where they are going to come together.the problem why they say to wipe off,is to fill any imperfections in the metal under the heatsink, but this star ice heatsink wasnt only pitted alittle[not to the naked eye,but it wasnt a mirror finish underneath like most water cooling blocks]and it wasnt real flat either.so i put a thin layer on both the hs and cpu.i was reading one site and they were talking about wet sanding the bottum of the heat sink, couldnt be bothered.the only problem is,you might be taking a risk, if you dont make that nice and thin layer on both sides with no air bubbles,as the artic silver works in from a solid to liquid and back again[not quite a liquid more like goop] if it isnt spread perfect it will get tiny air bubbles between the hs and the cpu which will cause the temps to rise, but i never had that prob.its just like a volcano it fine but the if you look at the bubbles, when it is erupting, they are even hotter then the actual lava so the air bubbles kind of explode between the hs and cpu which causes it to be hotter.something like that happens, follow?well good luck man, when i first learned how,i was like you, knew nothing.give it a try, just watch your temps.get everest home by ly??? something or other.that will tell you all temps under comp, and then sencor.ok?good luck man....i hope everything turns out good for you...peace...you will be fine i can see that, your already researching right?

Thanks guys, but I really have nothing left to do. I wasted another 60 bucks for a new fan and some arctic silver, and I did it how the instructions said to. Not even a 1 degree temperaure drop.

Conclusion - $800 down the drain.

Yeah, I cleaned off the old stuff.

Then, I put a small blob on the middle of my heatsink and rubbed it with my finger (through a plastic bag) and then whiped it off.

Then, I put a small blob in the ceneter of the heat spreader like it said, and then put down the heatsink without lifting it again and clipped it on.

Um.. by the way, i left it on bios for about 30 minutes while i went to have dinner, and i came back and the temp was saying 40 C still.
But as soon as i go to windows it shows 54 C.. i don't know if that's normal or not.

"what you are telling me cant be.did you plug in the fan to heatsink next to processor?"

I'm kind of confused.. I plugged it into the thing that says "cpu_fan" on my motherboard.

you didnt do the artic silver right.you put a blob in center get a tooth pick, and spread it out like you were streeting concreate or take the two ends in both hands one in each and spread it by moving it from one side to the other.you get what im tring to say?you dont take a big blob spread it with you finger.that will leave all valleys and dips in you process.no wonder its not cooling.didnt you read that long thread i left you.you should have alot left to do again.if you dont then you use too much and it will never kool it.look at my temps they are real, not posted to try to fool anybody.i write to try an help dudes or babes like you so you can have the fun of fixing it yourself, but you didnt read and you put the thermal paste on wrong...sorry you are going to have to do it again you probably put so much air in the s--t by moving it around with your finger...oh and the plug should be right next to the cpu somewhere probably to the left of it.dont grab that toothpoich in both hands,do it with one.you get the picture on how smooth and thin it has to be.and i do the same to heatsink, but they say not to but mines running great and has been for a week now plus its overclocked which means more heat dosent matter my thermal paste app was perfect....peace bro...sorry about the hounding but i want you to understand how.in the meantime im going to try and look for a how too link for you

Yeah I know what you're saying. I didn't do what you think I did, I mean I quite literally followed the instructions from the arctic silver website.

I didn't actually touch anything with my bare finger, or spread it at all on top of the processers heat spreader. And yeah, I have more than enough to do it again. By blob, I didn't mean a big blob, just used it as I had no other word to explain it.

Oh well, I'll try again and this time I'll spread it (using a toothpick) I just thought it would be impossible to go wrong if I followed the official instructions.

EDIT: P.S.
A whole nother question.. any idea why my fan speed wont pass 2792? It says it can reach 5500 RPM or something.

wait wait wait.how did you apply the stuff?you have to cover that whole big processor with a very thin layer of thermal stuff[as5]ok?it has to be evenly spead in a very thin layer i mean a layer not a drop of stuff on each and put together.i put a thin layer on cpu then i do the same with heatsink.when you put together do not push down on heatsink for you may damage processor.with me so far?

oh yea what kind of heatsink did you buy?

sorry,i thought you put a blob in the middle, moved it around alittle and smashed the two together and said look mom no hands[lol]

Everest MAY be giving you a bad reading. Look for other programs that will give you a reading of the cpu temp. Check out sites relative to your motherboard, there may be even a specialized program for it. My DFI came with ITE Guardian and it gives temps and controls the fans.

I think cpu-z will give cpu temps. It's free.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Motherboard monitor (IF your mobo is in its database) is another good one.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311

Also your diode sensor could be bad on the mobo. I don't believe you've ever answered if the chip FELT HOT. Leave the case open and touch the heat sink, if it ain't hot then your getting a spurrious reading.

First try these other programs.

DFI LanParty nF4 SLI mobo
eVGA 256mb GeForce 7800GT
OCZ PowerStream SLI 520Watts
AMD Athlon 64X2 3800+ 2500MHz (250x10)
1GB Patriot DDR600 (PC4800) mem
Boot Disk WD 74GB Raptor SATA
2 x Hitachi 250mb Deskstars SATA II, Raid 0
NEC ND 3540, BenQ DW1640, LiteOn 16P9S

My case is open. Anything that I can touch on my fan and/or heatsink is cool as a cucumber. (The computer is on)

I actually have a program that came with my motherboard, but it was giving me ridiculous readings like (with the first heat sink/paste it was giving me like.. 8/480 F (yes, 480))..

and then earlier when I first installed the arctic silver 5 i was getting something like 11/50.. now I'm getting a steady 28/82.. but .. I don't think I can trust it after it's givin me 480 F and 11 C as readings.

I also have a program called speed fan that gives me similair readings to everests. Give or take 1 or 2 degree.

P.S. I got CPU-Z but i can't find anything about temperatures on that program.

edit:
P.P.S nothing came in the box with my fan at all except for the fan/heatsink

Bought it on tiger direct. these are the specs..

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details....

go to the bottom

edit: On the program that came with my mobo, that says 28-30 C now.. when I played CS and then minimized quickly I would see.. 47 C, and then after a few seconds itd drop down to like 40 C, and then slowly decrease. and then I closed CS and its back down to 28-30..

I would think it was accurate.. but for some reason everest and speedfan were giving me like.. 70 C while on CS.
