Ok Little history on my machines and network

I have a linksys wireless router I use a toshiba satellite laptop 3.33Mhz 2gig RAM with xp and all the up dates.

This is what I want to happen. I bought external hard drive and I would like to hook it up to my router so I can access it through my wireless computer.

In a perfect world I would like to do notthing more than click on my computer and see the other drive. I just need it to store backups of my small bissniss related info.

In the long run I would like to access this drive from the road. throuth a VPN but will cross that road when i get there. For now I just want to be able to see it through the router.

Anyone doing this if so what steps do i need to take I have looked all over the net for info but no luck if you know of a link I will do the homework just point me in ther right direction please.
