Can't play 8x or greater DVD Movies in stand alone player if burnt from a USB Burner but they will play in any computer dvd player. Also, this only happens with a USB burner not an IDE burner.

Either of my USB burners will burn 4x media the media can be played in any of my 5 stand alone players.

This all started happening when I went to 8x media.

I've tired burning 4x again and it works perfect.

I have two external usb burners and they both create DVD movies on 8x or 16x that are choppy when played back in a stand alone player. The same DVD can be copied to a 4x DVD and will play in any stand alone.

All USB burners have current firmware and software and are connected to high end laptops. I reloaded the laptops with just windows xp sp2 and the burning software so they are clean with lots of free space and each one has at least 1GB of RAM.

I've tried 6 different brands of media -R and +R and changing the booktype, coping the source files to the laptop harddrive, making a DVD image then burning to DVD, lowering the burn speed, and I get the same results; if its 8x or above I get choppy movies. This has been going on for over 2 weeks now. I've wasted about 50 DVDs.

I can burn any of the 6 different brands of media -R and +R in either of my IDE 4x burners and the media plays perfectly in any stand alone player.

USB Burner #1: Sony 710U 16x DL (can't create playable 8x/16x)
USB Burner #2: SOHW-1673S 16x DL (can't create playable 8x/16x)

IDE Burner #1: Sony DRU 530A 8x (works)
IDE Burner #2: Sony DRU 510A 4x (works)

one of my USB2 burners does 8x fine (i'm a 4x freak but have been experimenting with 8x on this burner - it's a Belkin USB2 enclosure with a standard LG 4163B inside). i've done about 50 discs this weekend on this burner at 8x and watched a few thru fine (they were mostly Verbatim TYG02 discs). The LG 4167B i have won't do 8x when mounted internally or in one of the Belkin's. However at 4x i have 100% success on any drive i use however it's connected.
I must admit i only started doing 8x via the Belkin as i'd left 8x by mistake one time so thought i'd try out 8x as i don't personally do 8x due to having iffy results in the recent past..

You know that most ppl recommend 4x, maybe 8x if their setup/media can sustain it though right ?

mainly standalones, movie watching is one of my pastimes (sad i know!) so i prefer to watch virtually all films on standalone as my 5.1 system is connected properly to my standalones whereas my PC's only use onboard sound so aren't as much fun to watch films thru.

as i say i'm not usually a fan of 8x burns but with the 4163B it seems i can do 8x, the 4167B stays at 4x. My previous burner was a Sony DRU-700A which did about 2000 burns at 4x without problem. i make sure to watch a few of any newly burnt movies as soon as i've burnt them. helps me catch problems quicker (as i don't CRC check stuff too often, just when i switch media type or buy new burners etc). ie a few of my 4x burns were skipping on the standalones recently and at first i couldn't find the cause of the problem and didn't blame the burner as it had been so good to me for so long. But i wised up and had the burner replaced and just redid the films that had skipped before. problem solved..
