Try cleaning the laser with a Q tip and rubbing Alcohol. Maybe your v.4 is just more picky than your v.12. Until then, I guess just use your v.12 to play your backups.

Yeah I guess I'll try cleaning it, I'm pretty much a PS2 expert but this is annoying because sometimes SM 3.3 loads but sometimes I just will not load so I will try cleaning it. Oh BTW what kind of Alcohol are we talking about? Like can I just use cleaning water or eye glass cleaning water?

I mean rubbing Alcohol. Not the drinakable kind. One is ethyl alcohol, the other is methyl alcohol. The rubbing Alcohol kind can kill you if you drink it. I forget which is which.

Ok I got Swap Magic to boot now when I swap it with my backup it seems to be reading the disk but I just have a black screen!

What kind of DVD's are you using? What's the media ID?

A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. OK WOW, one of the discs I was using was HP DVD+R media which I had no idea was CMC which is the worst media and the media I expeted to was Fry's GQ brand which was the best media! SONY! so I'm gonna use those CMC for DVD movies lol oh BTW the SONY disc's load thanks for all the help and I didn't clean my laser I just went to Game Crazy and has them use there buffer and clean my Swap Magic looks like new now!

oh wait SONY is a copy fake not equal to real sony discs but I guess I'll just buy some disc, Tokijin I know I have read your entire guide but can you tell me from experience which media worked out best for you.

Well Taiyo Yuden's. I ordered some from http://www.supermediastore.com and haven't had a single coaster. I ordered these: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-... I went thru my first 100 pack with 0 coasters. I'm 20 discs into my second 100 pack, same deal. I like the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's Media ID: TYG02 because I like to burn at 4x. I love em, wouldn't change anything for the world. One member of this site did report he had some issues with the 4x TY's from sms.com, but that is the only case I've ever heard of it's kind. SMS.com has already provided him an RMA number and he will get a refund/exchange. They're very reputable. Many members of this site have ordered off there with good success. You could also try Verbatim's. I think Taiyo Yuden's are a little above Verb's, but either brand is excellent.

Ok but I have always used DVD+R's for my Slim likes them better likes any type of media bad or not but I just got my v4 about 2 weeks ago so should I use DVD-R's or DVD+R's?

I have a v.4 PS2 as well. Mine is modded with a Matrix Infinity. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. The v.4 PS2 is 50/50 as far as reading DVD+R's. I burn my DL games DVD+R's. My v.4 happens to read DVD+R's. I only use them for DL games and I booktype them as DVD-ROM. Stick with quality DVD-R's on your v.4 PS2.

Ok how do you set your PS2's book type? I am a PS2 expert but I never understude Booktype cuz I just used Swap Magic 3.3 on my slim forever because I bought a Mars MA-502 and tryed to install myself(big mistake) broke my PS2 so I went the easy way. I'm thinking about buying an Apple Chip cuz the chip and install cost is only like 30 $ w/ shipping! So I have 2 questions: How do I set my PS2's Booktype and should I buy an Apple Chip and have someone install it for me.

Norcalmods.com is a reputable installer. If I were you, I'd pay a little more and get a Matrix Infinity, DMS 4 Pro SE, or Crystal Chip. Those are the three best mod chips for the PS2, period. They auto boot everything, have a built in Y fix (so you can play PAL games on an NTSC PS2 and vice versa with the screen perfectly centerd), support multi disc PSX and PS2 games, have a stealth mode for online play, automatically shutdown when they get in danger of overheating, load elf programs off the MC, support PGen and Snes Station, ARMAX and Gameshark, Enable region free DVD support on your PS2, and are flash upgradeable via CD. In addition, the DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader program built into the flash and the Crystal Chip automatically patches a backups games DNA's. You should definitely pay a pro to install your chip unless you're an experienced solderer. You don't set the PS2's booktype, you booktype DVD+R's to DVD-ROM when you burn your backups.
53. Q. What is Booktyping?
A. Booktyping is the ability to burn a DVD+R so it that appears as a pressed DVD-ROM in any DVD-ROM drive it's inserted in. If you booktype DVD+R's, this allows for greater compatibility with most stand alone DVD players, including your PS2. Your burner has to support booktyping (most newer ones do).

I know it boot a whole lot mroe stuff with alot more features but Apple is cheap! only 43$ total! Matirx is like 100$ and I can't afford that with bill and stuff plus I am already Pre order Kingdom Hearts 2 and Driver: Paralell Lines 100 $ right there I don't really need all that other stuff.

Well at least get the Duo2SE then. It's a budget chip that's actually pretty good. It's like $20 on most sites.

A. Avoid the modbos at all costs. Get the Magic Duo2SE. It's one of the only budget chips that is actually quite reliable. It direct boots everything, supports DVD-9 games, and has multi disk support. An excellent value at around $20, if you can solder it yourself. If you pay a pro, it'll set you back around $70. (20$ for chip, $35, for install, $15 for shipping).

Ok is there any site just like Norcalmods.com that I order the chip and install at once and send them my PS2 and they mod it and send it back because i don't wanna buy a chip then go and send them that modchip after it comes from the others guys... a pain in the butt.
I have a question also I think my laser is almost dead so I have a v7 PS2 with a great laser can I replace it with that? v7 laser on a v4?

I wouldn't know about that. If your v.7 has a great laser, why not get that modded? Why get a v.4 with a dying laser modded, even if you're using it with a HD, that doesn't make much sense to me. Here's a list of quality modders.

I'm not sure about switching laser's between different models. I would definitely ask a pro before doing something like that. Read that booktyping tutorial. That'll show you how to change booktypes. Or do you mean you've tried and it doesn't work?

Well the DVD Decrypter metheod only works on BenQ, LG, LITE-ON, NEC, Plextor, Nu Tech, and Ricoh. So I don't think I can do it with my Pioneer DVR-108 burner and second is there a site just like Norcalmods.com that has Duo2SE chip and install for about 35$ install and 25 $ Chip price? I am reterning my v4 to the store since it had a bad laser and replacing it with a working used PS2. I'm not sure what version it will be but it will be a fat ps2. What version should I get? I higher version to make sure the laser is good like a v9 or v7
