I thought I remembered reading that Pioneer's official firmware didn't support booktyping. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/288184

Apprently you have to use hacked firmware from "Buffalo" or something. Crossflashing isn't necessarily dangerous, but I'd consult someone who is an expert in this particular area like Kivory666 aka "doc." PM him and see what he says. Just say Tokijin referred you to him. If anybody can help you with cross flashing firmware on a Pioneer drive, it's him. Good Luck!

His nick his kivory666, everybody calls him doc. I checked around and none of those sites install the Duo2SE or the Duo2GT. I can understand how much you want to play your games, but if you wait til you have enough money to get a top of the line chip like the DMS4, MI, or CC, you won't be disappointed. If you really want a good budget chip, check around for sites that carry the Duo2GT. Make sure they're reputable. There is a reason most legit mod sites specialize in the three best chips: a reliable modder doesn't have time for BS. They're a lot of BS chips out there like Apple chips or the modbo, there are three garunteed high quality chips, the DMS4, MI, and the CC. The ultimate decision is yours.

I think on going with the Duo2GT Modchip http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/customer/product.php?productid...
because it has everything I want, Multi Disc support and HD Loader support right? Am I right because I'm not sure if I'm just confused with Duo2SE so can you tell me what fetures Duo2GT VS.Duo2SE

The Duo2GT is the newer version of the Duo2SE. Truth be told, I'm not real familiar with it. It looks to be about the same as the Duo2SE as far as features, which is a good thing. The Duo2SE was a fine chip. The only real downside the firmware isn't upgradeable via flash. So the firmware you get with it will be final. That's not really a big deal, as it's a pretty feature packed chip. To me the features look identical, I think they just wanted to update the design and improve on the Duo2SE. I've never heard of PSXtune.com. Check around before sending them your PS2. If you can't find about them, I will. I'll PM you some info.

Yeah norcalmods.com is a good site. I've checked several different sites, and none of them mention it supporting multi disc games. Maybe it doesn't. Strange, since the Duo2SE did. From it's operating instructions I don't know if it would. If you look at the instructions, it requires you to insert your disc and hold reset to boot your PS2/PSX backups. If there were a situation where you had to switch discs in mid game, and you had to reset your PS2 to get the chip to read your backup, there'd be no way of resuming the game. That's just speculation, I don't know for sure. Again I'll do some asking around and see what I can come up with. Let me reemphasize that I think you should pay a little more and get a Matrix Infinity, DMS 4, or Crystal Chip. They all definitely support multi disc games. Multi disc support was an important factor in me deciding on the MI. I have a lot of PSX games that are multi disc and it plays them all perfectly. If you have the money, get one of those chips. If not, I'll ask around and see what I can find.

Just to be sure I will get the Duo2SE because at http://www.psxtune.com/psx2/orderduoe.html shows multi disc support but here http://www.modchip.com/ps2/duo2order.php says multi disc support also and I don't see why the newer model wouldn't have same features and more so I'll wait till tomarrow around 9 P.M. (-8:00 Time here) for you to make sure and I will also look around.

Yeah that's the best idea. I'm almost certain the Duo2SE supports multi disc games. It's a good chip. I'll look around and see what I can find.

It doesn't matter that much which version PS2 you have, as long as it's fat one and you make sure you're positive that the chip is compatible with that model. Get whatever chip you're comfortable with. I'd still go with one of the big three, but the choice is yours. If your happy with the apple chip, then go with that. Good Luck!

Well if you're main concern is playing games off the HD, go with the DMS 4. The MI works with HD Advance, but you have to load it onto the Memory Card with Infinity Boot Manager or FTP your PS2. The DMS 4 has a HD Loader program built into the flash. The Crystal Chip is the other chip I was referring to. It auto patches DNA ID's for online play and is an excellent chip as well. All things considered, you should probably go with the DMS 4 Pro SE. That's my opinion.

The Swap Magic CD is notorious for having issues. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Are your SMD's or Breaker Pro discs scratched or dirty? Try playing a burned audio CD in it if you have any. That'll give you an idea if it'll read your PSX/PS2 CD-ROM based backups.

My Breaker Pro I just got in the mail today and has no scratches my SMD thats a different story but I put in a burned music cd and played perfectly it must just be those 2 discs. Since the burned music cd worked fine so should burned ps2/psx cd games with my modchip right?

No way to know for sure, but I'd imagine so. If it can read a burned audio CD-R, it should be able to read a burned PSX/PS2 CD-ROM game. You'll have no need for Breaker Pro once you have a chip anyway.

Thank you Tokijin. You really helped out of a bind. I was having the same problem as a couple people earlier with not being able to get my Swap Magic 3.6 dvd disc to load properly on my V12 slim. but after following your advice about cleaning with alcohol. It boots up perfectly every time. Thanks again man I was getting ready to toss that thing.

P.S. Does the alcohol tuturial for cleaning laser lens work with V12?

Also thanks for chip info, and reputable installer locations. One quickie for ya? With those chips perferably the Duo series, it will direct boot backups no need for swaps after that right? Also I can still play online and have DVD9 playback with those?

When I was writing my FAQ, I couldn't find a tutorial for cleaning the laser on the v.12. I assumed it was because the v.12 has a flip top and the laser must be easily accessible. It'll work with any v PS2, it's just a matter of getting to the laser without damaging anything. Look around online for some schematics. Of the Duo chips, I'd go with the Duo2SE. From all the info I've been given the Duo2GT doesn't support multidisc games. Honestly I'll tell you the same thing I told BaconX, pay a little more and get one the big three, the Matrix Infinity, DMS 4 Pro SE, and the Crystal Chip. Each one does all the things you mentioned.

5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity, DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip Pro 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip. I recommend the DMS 4 Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html

The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=chip_infinity

The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not.

CC 1.1 Hacked Firmware v.19: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213

I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.

Note: v.12-14 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.

From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12-V14 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.
