I have a DVD project occupying 4.750 GB and would like to overburn the DVD with Nero. The data will reside on the DVD; thus video player compatibility does not remain a priority. I prefer not to reduce the data since it represent the compilation of one project. Currently, Nero display over capacity at 4.5 GB while the DVD states 4.7 GB capacity. My understanding is Nero's Option - Expert tab allows you set the DVD capacity and overburn. My curiousity relates to people's past experiences with over burning DVDs.

I wouldn't recommend overburning since the outer edge is the area most likely to have bad composite construction and thin/bad dye. Most limit burning to 4.3gb or thereabouts.

The 4.7GB stated is inaccurate and only placed there by the marketing department. DVD-5 +Rs only hold 4.37GB and -Rs about 4.38GB, not 4.7. Getting your 4.75GB project on a DVD-5 does not seem possible. To me even the 4.5 listed in Nero is pushing it to the extreme because like
laddyboy said the die will get very thin at the edge. Even if you did some how manage to get it on will you be able to read the dvd in 3 or 6 months down the road? If you can't reduce the size of the project maybe you would be better off buying a DVD-9 it ensure you keep all the data.

maybe you can use DVD Shrink to adjust the data to fit, and to fit to 4300MB would be sensible. overburning is possible with cd's have even done that myself over they years but dvd burning just isn't the same; it's hard enough to guarantee data integrity on a standard dvd burn, overburning dvd's is just not feasible..

or as Ppower pointed out - dual layer media....
