Ok, like most Azureus (V2.3.0.4)users I have had awful problems with
getting anything like a decent constant d/l speed (I,m on 3 meg cable) with azureus, or with any bt client for that matter. Except sometime back I found some inst. somewhere on the net that got azureus flying for me.
Problem was I forgot to do a hardcopy when I had to reformat drive.

Anyway reinstalled my o.s. and all my usual software, but I had no luck in tracing original inst. so I had to start from scratch so to speak, but unfortunately I have not been able to achieve d/l speed I would have thought should be pos. with my connection. I reckon my average d/l speed is about 20kb.

Whilst messing about with Azureus though I noticed that in the bottom right hand corner of the main screen are two boxes the furthest right being the upload speed box the next in being the download speed box, ok holding the mouse over this box comes up with the message "upload/download speed details - right click to change"
Right clicking bring up a laddered speed setting scale.
The only constant reading in here is Unlimited the others seem to change each time I right click on this box.

Ok now here are the questions,
If I select the unlimited all of a sudden my download speed jumps up
by quite a substantial margin but after maybe a minute it then drops back down to the d/l rate it was before the selection.
So why can,t I get this d/l rate under normal circumstances?
Assuming I,ve got my router DI-604 and Azureus configured correctly, which I think I have.
Would this burst of d/l speed be a simple test facility to indicate some sort of max d/l capability of the configuration?
Is there anyway of holding the Unlimited selection on? other than selection of unlimited during the configuration of Azureus which does not seem to have any effect when using Azureus?

I may well have missed something in all my readings of help files/posts/router and Azureus configuration with regards to this
issue, if so my apologies.

I would be grateful if any body explain this to me in everyday language that an old man like me can understand.

Added note. This also applies to the upload box to the far right
exactly the same thing happens to upload speeds.

This "spike" in your download speed is probably related to the fact that you uncapped your upload speed.

This is what probably happened;
1. Uncapped upload speed
2. Send MORE data than usual to another peer
3. (from other peer) Thankyou! Here's some MORE stuff than usual for you! (perceived as increase in speed)
4. (back at your computer) Sweet! Increase in speed!
5. (a few moments later - INSIDE your computer) Crap! Can't send ACK for each packet im receiving - not enough upload bandwidth - stop uploading too much!!

So, here are the main points;
* Faster upload speeds generally mean faster download speeds
* For each packet received, there is an ACK sent (a piece of data sent back to a peer saying "I received the packet you last sent, please send another")
* Reducing one of the above points increases the other. Hence, you need roughly 80-90% of your maximum upload speed set (So in my case, I use Optus cable - max Upload speed of the line itself is around 15-16KBps so I woul set it to 12, sometime lower depending on the amount of connections I have established.)

I hope this answers your question.

You know that rare phenonomon when after hours and hours and hours of troubleshooting, things just just magically work and you have no idea why? Just gotta love it! ;-)
