However when I look under My Computer its not listed. Does anyone know if I forgot something ? They are both Maxtor. one is 60gb the new one is 300gb. Ed

I am not sure what exactly your talking about "partition & format". How do I go about that? Ed

Under Administrators tools, choose Computer Management. On the left side of the mmc console, choose Disk Management. Disk0 is your primary drive (windows drive). There should now be a disk1 (maybe disk2, depending on how your cd drives are hooked up, etc). Look for the new drive, and you should be able to partition and format it here. Windows will not see the drive until it is partitioned and formatted.

Hope this helps.

I would also suggest using the ntfs format seems to optomize the hard drive in the windows xp series

go to your my computer and right-click on it. select manage and in there you will see a disk management tool. In there you can partition and format your new hard drive.

I agree...using NTFS will allow more specifically applied security. You can assign rights at the file level, as opposed to fat which only allows rights assignments by folders. And yes, NTFS has less 'slack' when it comes to file storage. ie. more efficient.
