Any of you know a good free Mp3 resampler ? I've tried Small Wma to Mp3 Converter which does a good job but it's not free.

Basically I need a program that can resample mp3s at higher bitrates to 64 kbs making the files smaller, thus being able to 'squeeze' more mp3s on my Creative Zen Nano.

Thank you.

dBPowerAMP is a great free audio converter. you can get it here http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

be sure to download the LAME mp3 plugin from the codecs page.

having said that, I highly recommend against what you are doing. By re-encoding a lossy format, you will lose severe quality. As if 64kpbs wasn't poor enough quality, having it be a second-gen lossy file will make it sound even worse. For the best quality possible, re-rip your CDs at a lower bitrate. the best ripper is EAC (exact audio copy). You could rip your albums at 96kpbs VBR and it would sound much better than re-encoding your existing files. there is a guide for using EAC here if you are interested:

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Yes, I know that I'm losing quality.

As I said, I want more mp3 on my Creative Nano. If I really wanted top quality I would have put around 30 tracks at good quality on my mp3 player, but since I want more, I need to make them smaller. So...less quality. And i don't have the original CDs :D

Thank you for the advice anyway ;)

Well just remember, once you have done this, they are at audiotape quality, and you won't ever be able to get that quality back...

64 kBps is really bad. The minimum I can stand is 128 kBps CBR and even that's pushing it. By the way what is the capacity of your mp3 player.

It only has 256 MB. And now I've managed to "squeeze" in around 90 tracks at 64 kbs and some at 96 kbs which are better. 64 isn't that bad, specially in traffic or on skis :D, but I think I'll use 96 kbs from now on. Still, I like some quality after all :D

You realise I have kept the original mp3s right ?

Thanks again for the help.
