Setting Up & Ripping in IFO Mode

Before you begin ripping you have to set up the movie so that DVD Decrypter will rip with no problems. First you will have to analyze the DVD. Launch IFOEdit and open the VIDEO_TS.IFO. Then Scroll down to the number of titles:

Notice which title points to which VTS. This says that VTS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 are being used. You can now close IFOEdit and Launch DVD Decrypter.

Also Expanding VGM_MAT will show the first play. On the pre commands it tells the player to jump to VMG PGC Menu 1, so take note of this.



This older version of DVD Decrypter is pretty smart. It lists the corrupted garbage VOBs at the bottom beginning with VTS_02_5.vob. I was curious about VTS_02_5.vob and decided to rip and it turns out that it was a garbage file and possibly part of the structure protection. We will be ripping VTS_02, as this is the 16:9 angle, so I had to check it out.

Now we have to set up DVD Decrypter to skip the corrupted files. These are the ones that cause it to fail when ripping. Look what happens when VTS_02_1.vob is ripped in file mode. The funny thing about this protection is that it is so simple to spot when just looking at the VOB Structure. Sony seems to corrupt some cells in VOB ID 1 of the VOB. Also, the movie begins in VOB ID 2. This means that there will be commands in VTS_02_0.IFO that will make a DVD player Skip VOB ID 1 otherwise there will be no playback on a DVD player. **Note, for newer Sony Releases, the movie corruption has slightly improved. The corruption will now lie in the same VOB ID as the main movie, but can still easily be found by either ripping cell by cell or looking at the cell lengths.** With this knowledge we will go into IFO mode:



DVD Decrypter has selected VTS_02 PGC 1 which is what we want. Now notice the cells in chapter 1. There sure are a lot of them. Also notice the VOB ID of Cell 1. It is VOB ID 1. No go to the cells that are VOB ID 2. You will notice that it is only cells 10 & 11. For Bewitched (?un-rippable? in new Version of Decrypter) they were cells 23 & 24. Now check only these 2 cells. If you are too lazy to uncheck the first 9 cells, uncheck cells 10 & 11 and then right click and select ?invert selection?.



Your final selection will be this (see how only cell 10 & 11 are checked). You will now have no problem ripping (for this movie or any other new ARccOS movie Even unreleased movies. Press the Decrypt button now:

Ripping the rest of the disc

Ok, this movie has both widescreen and full-screen, but we only want widescreen. The full-screen version is found in VTS_05, so we will skip the movie files from here. Here is what we will need to rip now:

VIDEO_TS.xxx, VTS_01_x.xxx, VTS_02_0.xxx, VTS_03_x.xxx, VTS_04_x.xxx, VTS_05_0.xxx, and VTS_06_x.xxx.

So we are going to skip all of the files we already ripped. From VTS 2 & 5, we will still need the IFO, BUP and VTS_0x_0.vob. This last one will contain menu information. Select all the files and then click on the decrypt button (note that not all selected files are shown in the screen shot ? Read the log for the full list):

Rebuilding the Main Movie

You can now close DVD Decrypter. I will show a screen shot of what happens when you try to load the movie as is in DVD Shrink:



Don?t worry about this though because we are going to fix it.

First launch IFOEdit and Open VIDEO_TS.IFO and press ?Get VTS Sectors?. This will correct some sector addresses. Now press DVD Play and play until you reach the main menu. Here is what played:



Take note of this. Title 1 is the main movie, title 3 is the Columbia logo, title 4 a preview and title 5 is a preview. We will at least be getting rid of title 4 & 5 or VTS 3 & 4 later on. Close IFOEdit and reopen it. This time open VTS_02_0.IFO.



Looks like all the bad cells are still in the IFO, so we have to get rid of them.

The easiest way to fix this is to strip some audio or video streams. This sort of kills 2 birds with 1 stone. We will use the strip streams option, only we will not strip anything. Click on ?vob extras=>strip streams?. You will get this screen:



Click OK. On the next screen check all the streams and then hit ok again:



After about 10 minutes, you will have a new movie.

The new VTS will save in a different Folder. Make sure you take note which folder it is in and then drag and drop it over the Original!!!!!

Here is what the new IFO looks like:



See everything is correct now (except Chapter 2 on were renamed to Chapter 3 and on, but this is only what the player will display and affects nothing). Close IFOEdit and open it again but with VIDEO_TS.IFO. Press ?Get VTS Sectors? to correct the sector addresses again. Now this next part is optional, but we will get rid of all of the stuff before the main menu and also get rid of the FBI Warnings and other garbage before the movie starts.

UpdateTo fix the chapter points, Click on PTT_SRPTI. Then on the bottom click on the chapter points you want to fix:

Go to VIDEO_TS.IFO and expand ?VMGM_PGCI_UT? and click on ?LU_1 (English) PGC-Menu_2?. Scroll down to the Pre Commands and add a new pre command and make it jump to title 1:

EDIT: This is what makes the DVD skip all the FBI Warnings and stuff that is before the movie plays.



Now click on ?LU_1 (English) PGC-Menu_1? and edit the pre command that says ?jump to Title 3? to this:

EDIT 2: This is what changes the First play to jump directly to the main menu when inserting the disc.



Now click ?save? to save your IFOs. Then test playback using ?DVD Play?.

Blank Out Unnecessary Features
For this particular movie, the only mandatory blanking will be VTS_05. This contains the Full-Screen title. DVD Shrink will still not be able to process the movie unless if you blank out the extra title. Remember, we did not rip it. Here is what you get with DVD Shrink:



Now it is VTS_05_1.vob. This is only because I did not rip it. You could follow the same process as VTS_02, but that would double the time it takes to make the movie.

Open VobBlanker and load VIDEO_TS.IFO. Then double click on the VIDEO_TS.VOB:



It will open the following screen:



Nothing here is being used by our movie now, so it is safe to blank everything.



Click OK and now we are going to Blank VTS_05:



Have it skip the rest of the VTS and then click Process.

****THE "FIX VTS" SECTION IS NEW (posted Jan 4, 2006)****

Fix VTS

The following section is optional and only needed if a movie will not fit on a DVD5. The process only takes about 5 minutes though (15 seconds human input, 4 min 45 sec PC processing), so it is not bad. Also, a DVD can be fixed by pressing the "Analysis" button and waiting for DVD Shrink's Deep Analysis to fix everything, however, this should only be done by people with fast PCs.

Newer Versions of ARccOS corruption are found in the same VOB ID as the main movie. This causes problems when manually removing the protection following this guide. The problem is that the movie will not compress like it should with DVD Shrink.

Here is an example using Bewitched (ignore the fact that the movie fits on a DVD5):



Notice that the Audio is detected as only 7MB and that when compressed as far as it goes, the movie will only go to 98.8%. This is because the IFOs have some garbage in them. Thanks to some info from Cynthia, this can be fixed by using a free program called ?FixVTS?. Just launch the program and drag and drop a VOB file on to it:



Next click on the ?Full DVD? button and it will begin remapping the VOB files:



See how it is changing the Cell IDs ?Remapping 1/28 to 1/6?. Also notice that it does not take a long time to do?280 seconds while I am multitasking is pretty good.

Here are the results:

Take note of the audio size now being 347 MB and the subtitles being 7 MB



In this shot take note that the movie can now compress as far as 43.9%:

Fix IFOs
This is a very short step. Launch IFOEdit and open VIDEO_TS.IFO. Then click ?Get VTS Sectors?. That?s all.

Compress & Burn
Not necessary here, but let?s launch DVD Shrink to really check the movie:



It?s analyzing. That is a good sign. Now to wait the 1 minute to see how it works out.



There you have it!!! The whole widescreen movie in fewer than 4 gigs with all menus & features, and the ARccOS protection was removed without the aid of AnyDVD, DVD43 or any other programs that can beat it. Yes that?s right; we did it with DVD Decrypter 3.1.0.0 which was out over 2 years before Resident Evil: Apocalypse was released. If you do not have a burning app, use DVD Shrink to create an image and Burn with DVD Decrypter. Also, do not forget to change the label to ?Resident_Evil_Apocalypse_WS? or something better than ?DVD_Video?.
