okay, i followed your guide to where you say check only cells 10 and 11 in chapter 1 of VTS_01 PGC1 [2:00:56]

in VTS_01 chapter 1 of my dvd there are 26 cells not 11.

how do i do this correctly, and how do you find out which ones to check and uncheck??

and also, i dont have any cells with a vob id - 2 in VTS_01 CHAPTER 1

to be exact none of VTS_01 - 15 chapters have a vob id of - 2

I have replied to your PM. I am pretty sure that only the last cell of Chapter 1 should be left. That is how it was in the Widescreen version.

I don't use AnyDVD too but I don't have problems ripping movies like Resident Evil, Star Wars 3, Bewitched, Stealth, Christmas with the Kranks. I am using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, DVD Xcopy. In fact I have been using XCopy for a year & backup more than a hundred movies before I stumble onto this website & download DVD Decrypter. The only difficult movie so far is Madagascar. XCopy & DVD Shrink failed to work. I have to use DVD Decrypter & ripped in full & use Nero to burn using a DL disk. Then I open the DL disk in DVD Shrink & compress to DVD5.

Do you have any suggestions on why the DVD drive acts like there is no media present? It's only acting this way for Sony and Warner Bros. movies. DVDDecrpyter works great for all the rest. Thanks

I have noticed that almost every Sony Movie comes with some stupid self installing Media player or something. It is possible that they hid some type of malware into this software that is causing your DVD Drive to act up. You should probably disable autorun.

Click on the start button and then select "run". Type in "regedit" and press enter. This will take you into your Windows Registry.

Now Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom.

Double-click the Autorun value, and type 0 for its value.

This will disable autorun. Keep in mind that when you disable this, all those CDs that you insert will not run until you tell the drive to run them. However, I think that for Windows XP, you will still get that pop up that asks you which program you want to run a CD with. Doing this will also prevent Sony Rootkit to install and may stop other CD copy Protections.

Also, it may help to have updated firmware. The firmware on my DVD-ROM drive is over 5 years old (my burner's is up to date though), but I have never had autorun enabled. Maybe autorun in the Sony movie's has something where it checks for the latest firmware or something. If that does not work, then try using your DVDRW drive. These tend to be able to read discs better even if authored or pressed badly.

Also, I suspect that part of the Sony Protection relies on bad replication facilities, so a bad disc is possible. Bad presses have a hard time being read by DVD-ROMs, but they work on a DVD Player.

Try DVD Decrypter in ISO Mode and then open the .ISO in DVD Shrink. This should work.

If not, rip it in File mode and then use VobBlanker to blank out PGC 2, 3, 4, & 5 in VTS_08 (you might as well get rid of the previews while you are at it).

I do not have this movie, so there is very little chance of me writing a guide for it.

I took a look at the IFOs, and this corruption is slightly different from Sony ARccOS (BTW, this is a MacroVision RipGuard movie). Unlike ARccOS movies, the corruption seems to be in two different places. I suspect that Cell 2 of VTS_08 Chapter 1 is corrupted and PGC 5 of VTS_08. Both of these lie in VTS_08_1.VOB, so it is definatley possible. The difference is the corruption in PGC 5. In Sony Movies, I have only seen it in PGC 1.

Okay I don't understand how you know what cells to select or not. Also will the guide work for other forms of encryption. If not not is there other guides. Or are they movie specific.

Well, I don't know what's going on. The DVD drive won't even recognize a Sony or Warner Bros. disc. I have tried Decrypter, AnyDVD, FabExpress, but nothing works.

@pigpen404,

The bad cells are always in Chapter 1. The easiest way to find them it to look at the length of the cells in time. Anything that plays for only 1 second or similar will not be necessary.

You can also just rip chapter 1 and split by Cell ID. Decrypter will get stuck on the ARccOS cells. Look at the cell number it is ripping and this is the first corrupted cell. Now try ripping again and begin with the cell after this one. It will either get stuck again on another ARccOS cell or finish ripping the chapter if there are none left.

After it is finished play the chapters one by one. Look at the video they contain. The first cell of the actuall movie will be the one with the full Sony/Columbia/MGM, logo. Usually this will be either the last cell of the chapter or the last two cells of the chapter.

Also, this will work for any ARccOS corrupted movie. Only the cells kept will be different. Did you notice which version of Decrypter I used for the Guide?? It is version 3.1.0.0, which has no ARccOS support (don't even think it had RCE support). ARccOS is not a new protection system, it is more intentionally screwing up the DVD Disc to make parts of it unreadable. A new protection system would require new hardware (DVD Players, DVD-ROM drives, ect...)

Here is a guide I posted for "Stealth" using an identical method and the same version of Decrypter:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260734

@KyJoe36,

This is the second time I am hearing this problem with Sony and WB movies. This is rather strange because WB does not have any corrupted movies. It is possible that you have bad presses. Do you know if your motherboard drivers are good? I had a problem with all DVDs except backups and it turned out that I needed to reinstall my IDE drivers. Also, there may be some conflict with software you are using like AnyDVD & DVD43.

"DVD Shrink wont compress it enough to fit on the disc"

If the only problem is not shrinking it down enough, take the image file that was shrunk but is still too big and shrink that one. Works for me.

After reading through other threads, I saw that Mousedown figured out what was wrong and got a working copy.

@okayl,

I am glad you made that comment about the movie, because I was considering buying it, not knowing what this movie was. I guess now I only have to consider whether to rent or not.

I was confused. Listened to everybody claim AnyDVD able to break sony ARccOS protection. I was trying to copy Bewitched. Had succesfully copied Polar express. Sony does install malware on your pc. Didn't have AnyDVD running in the background or hit the shift key when I put my Bewitched dvd in my burner. Restored my PC to an earlier version (thank God for Acronis True image). set up latest version of AnyDVD, had it running in the background, put the dvd in and presto, it worked. AnyDVD with DVD Shrink.
Incidentally, whatever malware was installed on my PC caused the Audio streams to show up as 7MB instead of 300+MB. So Sony does install malware on your PC and if you cannot copy Polar express or Bewitched (no sound) then they have secrectly installed malware on you pc. I am no expert but I wish I could find what they install and hope Slysoft looks into that. My solution was a system restore (or reload OS). But whatever Sony throws out now, makes me more pissed and mad to break their encryption. Even if I don't want to copy the DVD, if I get my hand on a sony dvd, i wanna break their encryption. It's like a challenge everytime, a cat and mouse game. ARccOS - Ha! what a waste of time and money on Sony's part. what did they pay their R&D for that? by the way, JaguarGod's article of using DVD Decrypter to break ARccOs works! Thanks for all you guys teaching us how to do this. really appreciate you time and love reading those posts. keep them coming.

Another way to prevent anything from installing is to disable auto-run. Do this in your Windows Registry.

Click on "start" and select "run"

Type "Regedit" and press enter.

Now navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

Next look on the right for "auto-run". Double click on it and change the value to "0".

Also, I posted a fix for the 7mb audio. It is found on the Newbie Guide:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260734

I am not sure which movie was the first to have this problem, but it is between Bewitched and Lords of Dogtown for the US.

I will add the new section to the posts of the ARccOS guide, but not on the PDF since I almost always send out both versions when I get a request.

EDIT: New section added...Again, this is for the online only and the PDF does not contain the new section and will not unless I get requests to do so. For the newbie version, it is available both online and in PDF.

Thanks very much for this guide. I have not needed it yet but it is nice to know that when all else fails there is a manua backup process that should work.

PC Specs: P4 2.6Gb, 1Gb PC3200 RAM, NEC DVD-RW 1300A, DVD-ROM 16x, 80Gb HDD, 250Gb External HDD, XP Pro SP1.

Jaguar God-

I used your newbie method to make some backups of my sony dvds and everytime i get to "Strip It" and i clik the button , the message,

Ifo Edit: Detected Dvd Drive
IFOEdit can't decrypt encrypted VOB files

appears.

and if i hit "ok" it starts the process of creating the new VTS in the folder but freezes after 1% completion. If you or anyone can help me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated as it has been extremely frustrating.

It seems like you are trying to rip with IFOEdit. You are to rip with DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode. After it finishes, rip the rest of the disc. Then load the IFO from the dvd folder on your hard drive.

If you are still having problems, send me a PM with your e-mail, I can send you the newest ARccOS guide written. It uses DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0 to avoid confusion and the movie backed up is The Cave.

First, I will say that the top part of this post can be read and understood by just about anyone. The second part can cause headaches and confusion. Whatever is after the bold warning message, is an optional read for people that want to know more of what is going on technically in the Structure corruption (talks about Ripguard, but most of it can be applied towards ARccOS). After the section there is a short message about what cells you would have skipped in Madagascar and some additional info.

@Jam_7th

For the corrupt cells in Zathura, I would need to see the IFOs of Zathura. You can e-mail them to me. Browse the DVD and drag and drop them to a folder on your hard drive (desltop is most convenient for you). Name the folder Zathura or something. Then zip them up with winzip or similar. Send me a PM also with your e-mail address and I will send a couple of guides your way.

As for finding the corrupt cells, there are two types:

There are the cells that are unrippable and the cells which were added after the DVD was authored.

The ones added by Sony after authoring are the easiest to find. Just go into IFO mode and look at chapter 1. Highlight a cell with your mouse. It will pop up a yellow info window. It will give the time of the cell and the cell size. Begin from the last cell in the chapter and work your way up. When you find the first cell that is 00.00.15 seconds long or similar, this is the first bad cell. Uncheck this cell and all the cells above it. You should end up with 1 or 2 consecutive good cells at the end of chapter 1.

There are a few ways to find the unrippable cells. The easy way is to try and rip the cells and see which does not rip. In IFO Mode, select only the suspect cells in chapter 1. Then set DVD Decrypter to split the file by Cell ID. Now rip. You will see which cell DVDD is on while ripping. When it gets stuck, this is at least the first unrippable cell.

Now, repeat the process, but begin with the cell after the one it got stuck at.

For example, if a DVD has 15 cells in chapter 1 and you suspect 14 of them, select cells 1 through 14. Now, split by cell ID and rip. If DVDD Gets stuck on Cell 8, abort. This is the first corrupt cell.

Next, select cells 9 through 14 and rip again. Repeat every time it gets stuck.

After you are finished, you can check playback of the cells to see what they contained. Most will be blank, but you will see that some have some video to trick you.

The second easiest way to find a corrupt cell, is to let PGCEdit do it for you. You will need the PSL plugin to do so. It will show you the cells after you get a couple of steps into the process.

*******WARNING!!! IT GETS TECHNICAL FROM HERE ON!!!*******

The third way is to analyze the IFO Structure. You would use IFOEdit for this. In order to do this, you have to know that the unrippable cells will be skipped and the only way to skip them is with a cell command.

First, look at the cell commands in "VTS_PGCITI" in the PGC. For example it may be (madagascar by the way):

[00000154]1.Cell Command(Link subset) LinkTailPGC
[0000015c]2.Cell Command(LinkCN) Link Cell 3, [button=0]
[00000164]3.Cell Command(LinkCN) Link Cell 4, [button=0]

What you have are cell commands that:

link to the end of the PGC (post commands)
link to cell 3
link to cell 4

Now, you must find the cells that have the cell commands. Look at the cell Playback.

What we have here is Cell 1 uses cell command 2 (link to cell 3) & cell 3 uses cell command 3 (link to cell 4). Cell 25 has cell command 1 (jump to the post commands of the PGC). Based on this, Cell 2 is not played and cell 25 is the last chapter of the movie. Cell 2 would be the unrippable cell.. It is possible that Cell 26 is corrupt as well since cell 26 is not played. The best way to be safe is to blank this cell in VobBlanker.

For Ripguard Only, look at the Cell positions:

If you look at the VOB IDs, cells 1 through 4 have different VobIDs than the main movie (this begins in cell 5 by the way). This is similar to an older variant of ARccOS. This is why DVD Decrypter works for Ripguard in File Mode, but has problems in File mode for ARccOS. Cell 26 also has a different VOBID which means it was added after authoring, or just added during authoring, but as a blank cell. Blank it out to be safe.

END OF TECHNICAL SECTION

So, if you were to attempt Madagascar following this guide or the Newbie guide, you would not rip cells 1, 2, 3, & 4. The only difference between this and ARccOS, is that you will have to blank out the extra PGCs (they are not ripped in IFO Mode). I would also blank out the last chapter of the movie to be safe. All other Ripguard movies would be similar until it is changed, and it will be!!

Extra info about Madagascar:

The spot where VobIDs change from 6 to 7 is where the movie has a layer break. This is cells 10 & 11. This would fall into VTS_08_2.VOB and is where I think people were having problems ripping. This would be caused by a faulty press or damage to the edge of the disc. A good thing to keep in mind for the future...

Also, PGCs 2, 3, 4, & 5 hold VobIDs 5, 9, 10 and 1 respectively. This means that PGC 2 & 5 appear before the main movie (when the disc is read, not played). Both of these have a good chance of having unrippable sectors. If you look at the Commands of the 5 PGCs, you will see that PGC 5 is not played. The rest also have a chance of not being played because they rely on GPRM values in order to be played.

Based on this, PGC 5 has the highest chance of being unrippable, but all of the extra PGCs should be blanked with VobBlanker even if they are ripped in File Mode.
