Okay guys and girls for some odd reason i have run into this problem i would say three or four times in the last 8 months.....I would be browsing through my files on my second hard drive and try to open a folder containing my files and it would tell me not accessible then i would restart the computer windows would tell me it needed to run a disk checker and then start going through a long process where sometimes i see recovering orphaned files or even deleting and this is where I am lost? what causes this? I have a windows xp pro w/ two HD a 70gig and then a 250GB that I have partitioned into two directories.....what could be causing this problem? any help

I've just run into this problem also. Unlike you, I was browsing files on my CD then all of a sudden the system restarts and runs CHKDSK to fix problems on the hard drive when there were none before. I am not sure what is causing it. I hope it's not a virus. What I have done so far is to go back to the last known good configuration and another thorough CHKDSK is runing as I am sending this to see what happens. I've also checked for viruses but none was detected. Unfortunately my system is a laptop and I don't have the means to install and scan the HD for viruses in another computer. Anyone out there with any ideas please advise. Thanks.

It is called a virus, I would bet. Do a scan, and see what turns up.

I am not sure if mine is a virus anymore. Since I posted my message yesterday the problem went from bad to worse. As it stands now I cannot boot the OS at all nor access the files on the drive using Windows XP. I get a stop error 0x00000024 no matter how or what I try. It is related to NTFS.SYS and its inability to read the file system (ntfs). I've tried safe mode, booting with the XP CD, recovery console, reinstalling XP, attaching the drive as a second drive on another laptop using a USB external enclosure. Needless to say I am not able to check the drive for viruses. In the course of this exercise I found that one of the DIMM modules on my laptop is bad. That's probably where all this started. I took it out but that did not help. There is nothing wrong with the HD because I did several tests on it which it passed without any problems whatsoever. I am trying to find a software that will let me backup some data files from the HD and then I will wipe it and reinstall Windows XP. Maybe Ghost or Acronis may work. I need one that will boot from a CD and is capable of using or recognizing drives attached to the USB ports on the laptop. Any suggestions anyone?
