(I searched, but did not see this addressed -- also I'm not 100% confident this is the correct forum section for this post. Please politely point out if there are already threads on this, or where this post should have been posted.)

Hello,

I am a university student and will be doing a presentation. I have a DVD (which is not encrypted) and I would like to make a copy for use during the presentation, but I do not want the whole thing copied.

What I want to do is pick certain scenes from it (like 5 to 10), and only copy those scenes (with those becoming the chapters). It does not need to have a menu when it's done.

I have can get the files onto my computer, or even copy the whole disk -- I just don't know how to do such a selective operation on it.

Hopefully I do not have to use editing software, and if I do have to, then hopefully you can point out something free.

Thanks!!

DVD Decrypter can rip by chapters if you go into IFO Mode.

If you want something smaller than that, use DVD Shrink in Re-author mode. That one has an option to Clip away parts of the movie. You will be able to go as short as you want.

BTW, both are free.

You may get the job done easier by using e.g. ImToo DVD Ripper. I think they have a free trial period:

I'm trying to do the same thing Kateri is. So will those programs capture the desired scenes with the audio and in sync?

I just did it last night with DVD Shrink, and it did it perfect, but it makes the ifo, bup(?), and VOB files, is there any way to make those into one file such as a AVI, mpg, or something like dvix.

Hey thanks everyone ... I never realized that DVD Shrink could do that. I'll give it a try!

Ok, I'm sorry. I have honestly tried to look through the search engine, but I just can't seem to get it. Could someone be a little more specific about exactly HOW to take snippits of a DVD, put them aside and combine them with other snippits. And of course then finally burn them. I use DVD Shrink and know about how to back-up my own dvd's but not about how to take pieces of a dvd and combine it with other pieces.

I'm rambling, aren't I? Geez...newbie.

Ok, when DVD Shrink makes the little clips, rename them. Make them something like VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, etc...

Then run VobEdit and hit "demux". Then choose the 3 main check boxes in the bottom half of the new window. This will split the Vobs into 1 .m2v, 1 .AC3, & 1 .sup (basically merging your VOBs).

Next launch IFOEdit and choose "DVD Author=>author new DVD". Add your source files and this will make a new DVD with the clips merged as 1 file.

There should also be some mpeg editors capable of merging VOB files. What I mentioned is only 1 approach, and I am familiar with it because I always Demux files so that I can author DVDs with something like Scenarist or DVDlab.

Do a search for combine VOB, Merge VOB, etc... This may lead you to some software that does it automatically.

I'd like to recommend AoA DVD ripper to you. It comes with a tutorial as well, which is most helpful! And the free download lets you rip 10 minutes at a time. Which means, you can use it over and over again for all the clips you need for free, as long as you're not wanting more than ten minutes at a time, and you're not wanting the whole movie. Perfect for music vids. If you want to purchase it, it's only about $35. Not very expensive.

It's very easy to locate the individual scenes to rip from the DVD. Simply watch that scene on your Power DVD player or Windows Media Player, and note your "time index". When you're in AoA, select "movie clip", and it will take you to a time line. You simply drag the slider to the time index needed. Easy peasy!

You can do it with DVD Shrink. Shrink will recombine as needed to make a playable DVD. At least it always works for me..

I have a couple of small animated guides that may help.

OMG, thank you guys so much. I couldn't believe how easy it was with DVD Shrink. The only thing is that I have all of these individual VOB files, so I have to burn them all onto a DVD now. I'm gonna use Nero. Any guide's about Nero?

Why don't you just set Shrink to open Nero at the correct time to do the burn for you?

Open Shrink -> Edit -> Preferences -> FileI/O tab -> Check the "Enable burning with Nero" box, Click OK.
That setting will stay like that so you only have to set it once.

When you reach the point in the Shrink process where you select "Backup!", the Backup DVD menu opens. The first tab is "Target Device". Find the "Select backup target:" menu and simply select your burner as the target.

This automates the process. It works really well. You don't need to open Nero. Shrink opens it for you.

Cheers,
Frank

Sorry, I should have been a little more clear. I am taking clips (like music videos) from different DVD's to make a DVD. I have used Nero with Shrink before and have set it up to burn as soon as it's done encoding. But I am working with different groups of files. For example, I used Shrink to copy just portions of a few DVDs and saved them all to different folders, with each folder having the individual clip's audio and video files.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to use Nero to create a new DVD with all the clips I have saved.

Thanks again for the great info though Frank! Your guides were fantastic.

To create a new DVD, with all the different clips you have saved, you only need those 2 guides that fasfrank provided. All the setup work is done within Shrink. You don't have to do anything special with Nero to have it burn all the clips onto 1 DVD.

His first guide shows you how to extract any specific clip from a DVD to your hard drive. Create as many clips from as many DVD's as you want, each saved in their own folder on your hard drive. Each folder contains the .vob, .ifo and .bup files for that clip.

When you are ready to put all the clips together for the final DVD that's when you use his 2nd guide. Add the clips one at a time, as the guide shows you. When you are done adding clips, you hit Backup and Shrink puts everything together for you as one DVD, ready to burn with Nero.

Great guides fasfrank :)

Ok, I actually did read both guides, but I must have made the last one more complicated than it needed to be. I tried to use Nero once without Shrink (a while back) and it asked me for VOB files. At the time, I had no idea what they were so I got a little confused.

This time I assumed that I had the VOB files (thanks to Frank), but I had no idea how to use them in Nero.

Wow, it's actually less complicated than I though. DVD Shrink is pretty amazing for something free.

Thanks again you guys!

Something to keep in mind is that if you can keep the DVD file structure complete then in most cases you won't have to deal with the individual files, like vobs. Many programs (like Shrink, Nero Burning ROM and many others) will only work with intact VIDEO_TS folders.

You should know what the basic files on a DVD are, There are only three general types.

.VOB files are the Video OBjects. They are the actual audio and video data. This is what you hear and see when you watch the DVD. These are the largest files on your DVD. They are restricted by specification to be no larger than 1 GB, so a 7 or 8 GB movie will usually have 7 or 8 .vobs.

If you only had .vobs on your disc then your DVD player would not know what to do when you put it in. Your remote control would not work. For this you need some navigation information. This information is contained within the .ifo files. InFOrmation.
DVD is much more advanced than VCR. With DVD you can select menus, different audio tracks, parental controls, alternate angles, chapters and many other special (and not so special) features. The .ifo files allow this to be possible.

.ifo files are so important that the DVD specification requires a complete set of backup files for the .ifos. These are the .bup or BackUP files.

So you can see that if you only had .vobs then you would be missing vital parts of the file structure. Many programs can take those .vobs and add the needed .ifo and .bup files to complete the file structure. Some programs, like IFOEdit allow you to add, modify and repair .ifo files.

All these files are contained within a VIDEO_TS folder (TS stands for Title Set)and all need to be in there for it to be valid.
The other folder you always see is the AUDIO_TS folder. This was created specifically for Audio DVDs, which is not the same as a concert video. This is something that I've never seen. I do know is that on a video DVD it is always empty, but still a required part of a DVD.
The audio on your DVD is mixed (multiplexed) into the .VOB data.

Whew.

Frank

I have read Franks guides and I was trying to make a DVD of different action movie clips. Will his process create different chapters for each clip or will it just be one chapter.
I have tried this before (re-authored all clips in ifoedit)but the way I did it, it just created one big chapter file. No way to advance to the next scene. I have not tried Franks method yet but just wondering about the chapter question before I start making my clips.

Shrink will not make chapters... That would involve creating a menu so you could select the chapters, which would require another program.

There are lots of programs which can do this,
NeroVision Express,
TMPGEnc DVD author,
DVD Lab
Adobe Encore,
and lots more.

It really depends on how complex you want to make your project. I like DVD Lab for more complex work and NeroVision Express for the simpler stuff.

Shrink is good for adding on an "insert disc 2" clip to the end of your movie, that sort of stuff.

What if I don't want a menu, just chapters -- can Shrink do that?

I have tried this with dvdshrink. You can have different chapter advance if you select scenes from the same dvd but it will make a big file if if you join scenes form different dvd's. If you want chapter advance you will have to buy a program like Nero or dvdlab or something like that.

I have Nero -- is there a guide on how to take all the clips and burn them with Nero so that I can advance between each one (each one serving as a chapter) ?

I don't have Nero myself but I'm sure if you search for Nero guides you should come up with something. Even within the program Nero itself should have a help section. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

That is a much better option! If you use Nero Vision (Nero 7) or Nerovision Express (Nero 6) it is very easy to do. There are lots of guides for making a DVD.
I'll go over the basics here using Nero 7, Nero 6 is similar.

First, open Nero Vision. You can use the SmartStart feature or go to:
All Programs > Nero 7 Ultra Edition > Photo and Video > Nero Vision. I do it this way to avoid all the "What would you like to do?" questions that SmartStart likes to ask. I know what I want to do and which program I want to use.

The screen opens and of course there is a "What would you like to do?" menu. Nero loves these things!
Looking over the list we have one that says "Make Movie". It''s blurb says "Create your own movie using video clips, sounds and special effects.
Wonderful. Thats exactly what we want to do!
Open it and you have the opening screen presented to you.

On the left is a editing window. You can view your video and "clip" it with the scissors. Hopefully you did this already with Shrink...or at least got it close. At any rate, you can trim it here if you need to. By placing your cursor over the various icons, tool tips are presented with a brief explanation. I recommend you get familiar with all the "buttons and knobs" by mousing over each one.

On the right is the content window, file bucket, assets area or whatever you want to call it. It has some tabs along the top as well as some buttons on the bottom.
The first tab is for your media, which will be your clips in this case. It could be DVD-Video, avi video, audio tracks, etc. This program supports a wide variety of video media formats and types which is one of the reasons folks like it.

The second tab is the video effects or filters you can apply to your project. Try them in your practice project....You should do a practice run or two before you commit something to media.

The third tab is for text effects you can add, like "Insert Disc 2" or add scrolling credits at the end of your movie. It is important to understand what the "TV safe area is". This is to avoid your text looking like "nsert Disc " after you put in too large of text and it cut off the ends!
Get a DVD RW and do a test run of your project. This is the only way you will know for sure what your project is going to look like. Those beautiful blues, reds and greens you used for your menu buttons may look terrible on your TV.

The last tab has the transitions to use between each clip. The thing to remember about transitions is that they go over the top of the junction between two clips and do not go in between. So if you add a long transition then you are covering up the end of the first clip and the beginning of the second clip.

Keep your transitions short and simple.

No one likes to look at your "star wipes" and the screen spinning off in different directions. keep it as simple as possible and use the same transition. I like about a 3 or 4 second blur fade.

Anyhow that is what those tabs are. At the bottom of this window you have the buttons you use to browse for media and then add or remove it to your project.

Below this is your timeline. It has a couple of tabs on the top left to let you switch between Storyboard and Timeline. You can expand or shrink it by using the zoom buttons, lower left. The best way to proceed from here is to get one or two of your clips and put them in here. You will be inserting the VOB. Once you get a couple of clips added try adding the transitions, video effect, text and whatever else you want to try.

The very best way to learn this program is by just adding stuff and pressing all the buttons and opening the menus. Most of it is self explanatory and there are lots of tooltips and messages. Read them!

Other Stuff:

Each VOB will be a chapter unless you tell the program otherwise.

Download the menu templates so you have a few more to choose from.

The audio from your clip will be preserved so you don't need to add it as a separate track.

Remember to "save" your project it is very easy to delete the entire thing, so save it often!

Well there is a lot more to this but this should get you started.

Some guides:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvd_tutorials.html

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/NVE%20Basics.pdf

http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/125/59/

You can Google for these guides as well. There are lots!

Cheers,
Frank
