I was wondering if anyone can help. I was trying to use a DVD-R in a Centrex CTDR1000 to do some recordinng but it kept saying there was no disc. I tried with a different brand and the same problem occurred. I tried all the logical things - disc right way up? Yes... Will it play normal DVDs? Yes... so I don't know what the problem is... can anyone assist?

Please e-mail me at GroovyBoots@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Chris Thomas

Doesn't it use just +R and +RW media? I don't think it uses the -R and -RW formats. Check the manual or the sticker on the front to be sure.

Ah, I see... I didn't realise there was a difference... the DVDs I bought have DVD-R on them. That would explain why they didn't work. So... as I'm a bit thick with this, can you explain the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R ?

Thanks,
Chris Thomas

Just two different strategies for writing a disk. Some manufacturers adopted the -R scheme. Another group came along and adopted the +R scheme. Fortunately, with the exception of some of the standalone DVD recorder manufacturers, most DVD burner manufacturers support both formats as do most standalone player manufacturers today. +R media is capable of being booktyped as a DVD-ROM so players think they are actually playing a pressed (commercial) DVD. This helps some players overcome difficulties and play some burned DVDs that they might not have otherwise. Overall there is little difference between the formats other than the booktyping. However in my opinion that's a big one. I think +R media is preferable unless one has a device that requires -R media. There are other technical differences between the formats, specifically, the exact means of writing the disk itself.
