Original file: Wav
Converted to Mp3
Converted back to Wav
Question:
If I convert a Wav to Mp3 and then back to Wav, will the converted Wav file be identical (Freq Response/Dynamic Range) to the original Wav?
Cheers

The quick answer would be no. You took out information to make it a compressed file & you cannot get that information back.

Thanks Dave
That's what I thought.
In the future I'll leave myself a copy of the original Wav

or next time if the wav file is too big to keep, look into using lossless formats such as FLAC to store your compressed files...

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

DJ, Thanks,
Since I am totally ignorant of this concept, I assume it saves space but keep the sonic attributes of the original file.
I usually save Wav on DVD, usually right before I take up 50 Gigs on each of my two 50GB drives
I just looked into FLAC (FLACK Frontend) Since I?m XP pro, it seems logical.
Can you confirm my first impressions or correct if necessary
Thanks & Cheers

FLAC is a compressed format, just like mp3, wma, ogg, ra... But the nice thing about flac is it is lossless, unlike lossy formats such as mp3 and wma; both of which can be of decent quality, but if you want to preserve the original quality of the wave you could try flac and see how the results are. but then again, if it were me and I had the HD space, I'd just leave them in wav. but if you're still interested here's some details on flac:

When I digitized(is that a word?) my old LP's. I could put about 10 or 11 on a DVD in wave format. Then I found Monkey's Audio. It compresses without loss in quality. I could then fit about 19 to 22 onto a DVD. The file sizes were anywhere from 48% to 58% of the original. When you uncompress the files you wind up with an exact copy of the original. Don't quote me on that one!! It's very easy to use & it's also FREE. Check it out.

I agree though I am grateful for the education both you and DJ provided
The big lesson for me was once you decompress a wave to Mp3 there's no going back
Appreciate it
