I have burned lots of back - ups , some good some bad and the bad ones I just burn again and it is fine so I know it is not an error in the ripping of the files off the original DVD.I am using the latest Clone DVD and latest version of ANYDVD.At the end of each burn clone dvd assures me that the burn has been successful,I guess the burn can be successful and still make a junk copy of the copied DVD because it is happening at least 20% of the time.I use both DVD+r and DVD-r media , it really makes no difference other than on my machine the dvd-r's take a little more time to burn. I have been using 4X and after some coasters I moved it back down to 2-2.4X for a slower burn,my cpu is a gig and have 356 meg ram.I have used all different brands of media and there is no pattern to what discs I am using or how fast I burn that makes a bad disc.( I wont burn at maximum 8X ) My burner is a Sony Dual Layer.I reboot after every burn to refresh resources. When I burn a data dvd disc with Nero it has a box to check that will verify data that is written.. Is there any way I can do this to a movie? I save my ripps to the hard drive and only delete them when I or someone else tells me I have burned a good copy.Sometimes I can scan thru the chapters on my PC with my hand over the screen so I dont spoil the movie just to see the chapters in the upper right of the screen , to tell if the movie will freeze or not, when it is a bad burn it will just stop at a chapter and totally freeze up. Any Ideas on how to make a good burn everytime? Granted a 20% fail rate does not break the bank when making bad copies but it sure is a pain in the butt sitting down to watch a movie and have it totally freeze twenty minutes before the end .. Any thoughts or hints for me? It sure is appreciated.
Thanks,

Craig

@CRAIGERR
Where do you encounter these problems? hardware or software player or both?

Bad media could be the reason, but i also noticed that you don't have much ram. (Newer windowses, like XP and 2000, tend to need more than that)

If you really want to solve this kind of problems, you should do things in patterns.. if something borks, then use the setup that worked last time.

Fuji +R "Made in Japan" are made by TY, excellent media.

Pausing, pixeling and freezing are usually cheap media. (In the beginning I played around with cheap media because of lower cost, not worth it. The good stuff (TY, Fuji mij are TY, Ritek Ridata, Verbatim for me) can be had at great prices (20-25 each) when watching for sales.

However, I also had some problems with playback on one of my Sony players, a 315 model. I replaced it with the Sony 5 series model and all is fine. Once in awhile it turns out to be the player.

where do you get fuji films made in japan? all i ever have found are made in taiwan and they pixelate. they seem to be ok if the movie is 100% but if compressed the fuji's show it and the verbatums dont.

if you are getting pixilations, freezes and skipping it's definately a media problem. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
check out the media guide and become familar with what is good and what is crap! Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony, Maxell to name a few are great media and I don't use anything else! Stay away from Memorex!!! it's the worst! I think if you change your media your problems will disappear!!!

I have used both Maxell's that were MIJ and MIT. The MIT brand id out as Ritek R03-02 and I have had 100% excellent burns with these. Now that being said I just finished 100 Office Depot brand discs that I got on sale for $24.99 plus tax and they too ID'd as Ritek R03-02. Great media.

Visit the DVD+R forum and you can learn a lot about media and the id codes. Very interesting reading.

I will be watching Office Depot for their sales as their named brand media is excellent.

Cheers.

I strictly use Taiyo Yudens inkjet hub printables. I never had a bad burn yet and it's been over 400 disk so far!

Thanks for all the replies! I guess a group consensus says it is a media problem. My last 4 burns that failed were OFFICE MAX brand and HP DVD+R Both on sale at less than 15 dollars for a 50 spindle pack. ( an unrelated bit of info is that I used the HP brand to back up mp3's as DATA and just before I deleted them from my hard drive I tried playing some of them from the DVD , I am not sure how Nero puts them on the disk but in alphebetical order when I got to the "q"'s the disk would just freeze up, so I tried to drag some off the disk and same thing happened from "Q" to "Z".Needless to say I will use the rest of the spindle pack and check everything before I delete from hard drive, but I wont be buying the HP brand again.. Clone DVD spit out 3 HP DVD R+'s on me in a row telling me it was bad media and to replace it)
Tonight I invested in a Sony 4.7GB/120min 1x-8x compatible DVD+R AccuCORE Spindle pack and Nero tools says manufacture ID is YUDEN000 TO2 .I will stick with name brands if that will make the difference.Next 50 pack spindle I will try Verbatum.. Again, thanks for all the replies!!
