Hi, all! Is it possible to upgrade the A-Open DUW1616/ARR so that it will burn double-layer DVD-R disks as well as the ones that it can already handle, DVD+r disks? Thanks!
I'm not aware of any firmware that allows burning -R DL media for that burner. However I don't follow A-Open products as closely as others. The question I would ask you is why you want to use -R DL disks? Many standalone players won't recognize or play -R DL burned media at all. They however will play +R DL media when booktyped as DVD-ROM. Since -R DL media cannot be booktyped, they are at a disadvantage. Of course this is relevant only if you're using a standalone player of sorts. Do you have a special need to use -R DL media?
Hi, and thanks for your reply. I was operating on the assumption, which may be incorrect, that since the 4.7 gig DVD-R disks that I've burned have been compatible with my standalone DVD player (the one made by Cyberhome) that the same type of disk format for DL would also be preferable. Maybe I'm wrong. I should probably experiment. Also: when you say that the DVDs should be booktyped as DVD-ROM when burned, I'm wondering if either Nero or DVD Decryypter automatically designates disks in this way. If not, how do I make sure that this happens?
Unfortunately, rebbie, the world is round but unfair. :) -R disks playing in the Cyberhome is not the same as -R DL disks playing. That's not to say they won't since I have no way of knowing in advance. Cyberhomes are pretty good at playing most everything. Is this a 300 or 500 model Cyberhome? Does it play +R media well?
To set the booktype for +R media in DVD Decrypter:
1. Place Decrypter in ISO Write Mode.
2. Right click on the burner name in the Destination menu.
3. Select Change Book Type....
4. Click the Ricoh tab (I think A-Open is Ricoh)
5. In the Change For: menu, select Drive (for DVD +R DL Media)
6. In the New Setting: menu select DVD-ROM.
7. Click OK
8. Repeat for +R and +RW media if the firmware allows.
