i wonder if any one can help. i have in my pc 40gbhdd and i want to put in 200gb.???????? iwant to know how to take the stuff off the 40gb and transfer to 200??? iwonder how this is done . please help thank you.here are my specs will the mother board handel it

If you are asking how to transfer your data from the 40 gig to the 200 gig,Acronis True Image software will make an image of your 40 gig and copy everything over to the 200 gig,including your operating system. Very user-friendly instructions. Worked fine for me in my upgrade to my 200 gig.

You could also try using Symantec Ghost. It's good at using that capability as well.

I endorse what Dikdimond has said. Having used Norton's Ghost, Ontrack Disc Manager and Acronis True Image form http://www.acronis.com I have come to favor the latter for it's ease of use. If you intend to partition your HDD you could try Acronis Partition Expert.

@ Jamzbond,did you have trouble with Norton and your operating system? I had problems getting Windows XP to boot after my image was created...it wouldn't boot at all. I realize that Windows is only meant to be installed on one machine,but I was only trying to upgarade my hd,not distribute M$ software! I used Acronis,no problems at all.Actually I used the trial version,it had all necessary functions.

I have both Norton's System Works 2003 and 2005. I used the Ghost feature of the latter with Win XP Pro and it worked well. I didn't have a problem with it. I was disenchanted with the antivirus portion and found the whole 2005 package to be bloatware. A real RAM hog if you like, so I removed the entire thing.

do you mean the program or the 200gb hard drive?well i moved everything using max blast to the new hard drive . but i didnt take the old one out yet (40gb).the computer does reconize the new hard drive.i have two ? if i wanted to sell the old hard drive how do i erase everthing but windows xp . and how much money should i ask for it .it works fine. the new one sounds a little louder on startup than the older one i wonder why.how much hdd do you guys have

Just format the whole drive (the 40 GB) since WinXP wont work on anyone else's pc anyway.. When you installed XP on your PC, it made a record of your hardware setup thus you cant transfer the drive to another PC and have XP boot up since that PC's hardware doesnt match what XP has recorded.
as for the 200 GB being louder, bigger drives create more heat , are generally slower speed (RPMs) and thats the sound you hear - the drive spinning up / being accessed. My 2 250s are noisy as hell when under extremly heavy load/access.
Not to drag bout how much HDD space I have, I have over a Terabyte of HDD space (4 SATA drives, 6 IDE/ATA/PATA - all on PCI IDE controllers cause my DVD burner and DVDROM are on their own IDE chanels on the Mobo)

ok i have a 469mb file folder of windows xp. ok how can i put it on say a dvd so it will work in any p.c.here is what i am trying to do i have an older pc i think its running windows 96 or 98 not sure.and i am going to put in a 40gb hd in it that already has xp on it .but some people tell me the pc wont work so i have to reforemat it.if i put this disk in will it work. first i have to get it to cd or dvd please help.

Transferring a Windows installation from one pc to another doesn't work, as the other guys have pointed out also.
So putting a Hard Drive which already has Windows installed onto it from one computer into another... THAT ain't gonna work. In that case you will indeed have to format the system partition and then install Windows from scratch after you transferred the drive to the the other computer.

I have done it with no problems,actually. I merely repaired my Windows installation. I didn't do a complete reformat. Installed all the current drivers,voila! No problems yet,and it's been six months since I've built this computer.

Allrighty then, don't know what exactly happened with this "repair" but I reckon at least all chipset divers for the 'new' main board had to be installed. Please report back here when your system breaks down (lol), 'cause usually these types of setup don't run (stable) for long.

By "repair" I mean that instead of choosing the option to reformat Windows,I chose to "Repair the selected Windows XP installation,press R". Believe you me I was skeptical,especially since I did it at a time when I built my first pc,but after 6 months above-normal usage I've never had a blue screen or crash...knock on wood lol. From what I understand doesn't Windows(on a clean install) search for your chipset,optical drives,hard drive,etc,and identify them. My reasoning was that attempting a repair of Windows would allow all that info to be over-written while the main part of Windows would be untouched. Plus some help from Google

I just would not take the chance on an instable system and just do a fresh new WindowsXP install on my new system drive, but that's just me I guess ;-) ...

WHY DikDimond?? It's working fine for quite some time now, as you said, so why go through all the hassle of a time consuming Windows install from scratch then??
I'm actually quite intrigued by this. Transferring a hard disk, with windows installed, to a different pc, do a repair, and the bloody thing WORKS!! Sounds great to me.
Maybe I'll give it a go myself one of these days, it's obviously worth a try!
