It's not the media. I burned it to Taiyo Yuden and it works perfectly. Using crappy media would be the problem. Almost every one who burned it to Taiyo Yuden media has had success. What crappy media are you referring it to? There is no instance that I'm aware of when it is useful to use cheap media.

Ri-data's are good. The Maxell's with media code Ritek G05 are okay as well. Avoid anything with the CMC media code, it's garbage. Burning at 8x won't work for everybody. It depends how new and what type of burner you're using. I am using an older Sony external burner. If I burn at 8x, nothing will boot. The media your using isn't that bad. I'm not ragging on you or anything, I just don't want all the noobs using cheap media because they read it on afterdawn. ALWAYS use quality media. I use Taiyo Yudens. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims are excellent. Ritek is okay as well.

I just backup this game 3 times and the first 2 time didn't work. The first 2 time I did a direct burn with Fujifilm +r and verbatim +r on different burners using Nero, plextor and Lite-on. On the third time I use DVD Decrypter to create an image and the use my lite-on (set to 4x) to write the image on a verbatim ?r with DVD Decrypter and set verify. And there is no lag at all. =)

I used DVD Decrypter to create an image and I burned it once with Sony DVD+R, and once with tdk DVD-R with a lite-on burner on 4x. Both attempts produced a really laggy DQVIII game that skips and takes forever to load. I guess I'll try taiyo yuden next.

If your backing up an original, try setting the read speed to 1x in DVD Decrypter. Go to Tools--> Settings--> Device. Check set read speed and set it to 1x. Try creating the image that way. It'll take an hour or so to finish. Then burn as normal. You're using decent media, I don't think that's the problem.

I'm also having problems with Dragon Quest VIII. I got the game to load but near the beginning, during the cutscene where the characters are walking into the town, the game freezes and unfreezes quite often. Is anyone having this same problem? I burned the game two times @ 2.4x and it still freezes.

Im still having problems. Im using RiTek -R's and burning at 1x, Ive tried both DVD Decrypter and Alcohol 120%. I also have some Memorex -R's and +R's that I have tried at 1x with both Decrypter and Alcohol.
At the start it takes forever to load and you can hear the laser goin crazy, after it finally loads its just skips and glitches. All my other backups on my RiTek discs work fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah speed it up to 2x or 4x. It might need rebuilt. I haven't come across anybody who had to rebuild this game. It can't hurt to try. I made rip of a rental from Gamefly to my HD with the read speed set at 1x. I burned it at 2x to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's and it plays perfectly.
10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. Games over 4.38GB's will need rebuilt. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip.
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949 With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515

I burned both of them on Memorex (made in Taiwan) but I have burned more than 50 ps2 games and never had a problem with skipping before. And I know it's not because of my ps2 or its laser lenz since it's only one year old.

Oh yea, there's one more thing. There's this dummy file around 50MB in the game. But it's so small... shouldn't cause a problem, can it?

There is indeed a dummy file. I checked my copy to be sure. Rebuild it with Nero and IsoBuster. Overwrite the dummy file. Lionhart you need to get some better media. I already posted this in the other thread. Get any of the brands I mentioned there.

49. Q. I'm rebuilding game X, I'm concerned it has dummy files. How do I identify the dummy files?
A. From Hursty: When you see the iso has dummy files.i.e 00DUMMY. 01DUMMY. GARBAGE ETC, you need to get rid of them, by replacing them with a file. So on the desktop, right click the mouse, select "new" > text document and rename it as it appears in isobuster, then click enter. Then open the text document on the desktop, hit space once, then save, this will create a text document with 1 byte in it, Do this for all the dummy files you have, as some games have more than one.

I got Dragon Quest VIII to work! I was reading around and people were talking about gnie's program to rebuild PS2 ISO's. I've done some rebuilding before with CDVDgen and apache, but this was way easier, just follow the steps in the tutorial, it worked for me. I'm guessing that the files were out of order on the disc, not the speed or media. Cause Ive tried Memorex, Imation, and RiTek at different speeds and they all work fine now that the ISO is properly made.
