Burn at 1x or 2x on the 4x Taiyo Yuden's. Rebuild Dragon Quest and overwrite the dummy files. Sometimes it isn't a matter of size, rebuilding will just help some games run smoother. Make sure to overwrite the dummy file.

I'm having problems too. I ripped the iso from the game, Burnt at 2x using Verbatim DVD-R and the game loads fine but It lags. Like when I go into a different screen or through a door, it'll stay pitch black for like 15-30 seconds, feels like im playing Resident Evil >.<; Even after battles, it would just sit there forcing me to stare at the chacters for 30seconds to a minute. By the time I got to the cave near the waterfalls, it took me almost 2 hours?! Anyways, should I rebuilt the iso? Would it help? Please any help would be great.

Hi, I recently downloaded magnacarta, dragon quest 8, and romancing saga, but they all don't work? I'm thinking it could be the file order so can someone tell the file orders? BTW I'm using tdk's (they've been reliable in the past) and have also tried rebuilding them but none them have worked so instead of wasting another dozen dvds any help would be useful? Is there a way to find out the correct file order?

I just talked to somebody who was using TDK fakes. Check the manufacturer ID against what you see here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
To check the manufacturer ID, open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Manufacturer ID. Try rebuilding Dragon Quest VIII. That's the first thing I do when a game lags. DQVIII has a 50 MB dummy file. You need to overwrite the dummy file when rebuilding.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515

49. Q. I'm rebuilding game X, I'm concerned it has dummy files. How do I identify the dummy files?
A. From Hursty: When you see the iso has dummy files.i.e 00DUMMY. 01DUMMY. GARBAGE ETC, you need to get rid of them, by replacing them with a file. So on the desktop, right click the mouse, select "new" > text document and rename it as it appears in isobuster, then click enter. Then open the text document on the desktop, hit space once, then save, this will create a text document with 1 byte in it, Do this for all the dummy files you have, as some games have more than one.

Hey Tokijin, Thanks a million for the help. I'm going to rebuild the .iso and get rid of the dummy files. Once I'm done testing, I'll post up the results. Hope it works~>.<

Hey Tokijin, I can only burn the 4x Taiyo Yuden dvd's at 4x so I can't burn it at 1x or 2x like you suggested. My dvd burner is 16x, does that mean 4x is the slowest I can burn those TY's? Is there any way to fix this?

Try updating your burners firmware. What program are you trying to burn with? Usually it isn't a good idea to burn at the max speed of the DVD. Be careful when upating your firmware, as a bad flash can ruin your DVD Burner. Google for your make and model of burner. The flash page should contain info for updating the firmware. Your other option is to go ahead and burn at 4x. If your using Swap Magic, you'll need to rebuild DQVIII.

Just rebuilt the Iso. I have updated filmware recently, so i know its not outdated. Brunt it to a Verbatim DVD-R @ 2x because that's the lowest the DVD can support. The game still lags just a tad bit. I forgot to check for dummy files, was too busy with other stuff. So if anyone has tried or going to try getting rid of the dummy files, if there even is any, check if it helped out or not?

Tokijin, what does updating the burner's firmware do? Anyway, I tried updating it with DVD Decrypter and it couldn't find any updates. I guess it's because my burner is quite new (I got my computer with the burner just last month). I have burned those TY dvd-r's with both Nero and DVD Decrypter and the slowest speed they can burn was 4x. Do you use any of those TY 4x dvd-r's (TYG01)? If so, can you burn them slower than 4x?

There is a 50 MB dummy file in the root directory of the iso. It's dmydata or dummydata, something like that. Create a new text document, type one character, then save it over the dummy file. Then rebuild as normal. That should take care of the lag.

Sort of an "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc. That's how AD defines firmware. That's probably not the problem if your burner and computer are brand new. I use TYG02. They're the same as your's except they are 8x DVD-R's. I burn at 2x because I'm using an older burner. Check to see if the copies you burned work.

Create a new folder. Name it DQVIII. Extract the files to the DQVIII folder with IsoBuster. The dummy file for this game is dmydata. Once you open the image file with IsoBuster, you can't miss it. Once you've extracted the game files with IsoBuster, you overwrite the dummy file with a text document. Right click go to new, select text document. Double click the text document. Once your inside it hit the space bar once. Go to save as. Browse to the folder where you extracted the game files with IsoBuster. Double click the dmydata file. Windows will ask you if you want to overwrite it. Click yes. Open Nero burning ROM. Select DVD. Click UDF/ISO DVD, it's the last option in Nero Burning ROM, then click new. Drag the files from the DQVIII folder into Nero. Order doesn't matter, just hit Ctrl+A. This will highlight all the folders. Right click the highlighted folders and click copy. Then right click in the New UDF/ISO and click paste. Click burn. Make sure no multi session and write are checked. Burn at 2x. It should work without skipping. If you need a guide with pictures, check here:

It could be your PS2. You didn't mention it was giving you problems with other games. What version PS2 do you have? v.1-3 PS2's don't read backups well. There are alternate rebuilding guides. Try rebuilding with CD/DVD Gen. If that doesn't work try Genies rebuilding tool.

I have a v.7 to tell you the truth, my old ps2 busted, so i went out and bought a Used one from game stop, and I swapped the cases/serial stickers. Returned the broken one and got my money back.. Shhh don't tell anyone. But yeah, it never read CDs at all. I have no problems with my other back-ups not even God of War nor Battle front II skipped or lagged. I think i had Shining Force Neo music lagged a bit, but not enough to where it bothered me. I rebuilted using the Nero way, and CDDVDGEN with isobuster. Nero didn't work, and CDDVDGEN lagged still. I haven't tried the new one yu mentioned, I guess I'll waste another DVD-R trying it. >.<; But I do want to thanks for all the help man. <3

Well, I got my Dragon Quest VIII (and Magna Carta) to work without any lag using Taiyo Yuden dvd after rebuilding it and replacing the dummy file. But I still can't burn those TY's below 4x, any ideas as to how?

Also, I have a question for everyone who have burned a "good" copy, is it normal that it takes around 5 seconds to go through doors? Not like it's bothering me or anything (at least the load time is better than Magna Carta :) but I just wanna know.

And thanks for your help Tokijin.

My copy of DQVIII plays perfectly burned to Yuden's. I noticed somewhat lengthy load times (mainly between story related stuff). I think it's just the way the game is designed. If the Yuden's work find at 4x, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe you got a crap version of the iso Dynasty X. Have you tried overwriting the dummy file? You could always rent the game and copy it. I don't think you'd have any problems then.

Yeah I got rid of the dummy file. The game was brand new straight from Gamestop. I work there also, not like any of you guys care >.<; but yeah, there couldn't be anything wrong with the game. I'm just going stick with the long load times n lag for now. What can an extra 10-20 hours do to my playtime? ehh..... -=..(

Well, I checked the tdk manufacturer ID, and they were real tdk's but they were DVD+R instead of the DVD-r's that I had ordered online. And after I rebuilt the iso again and reburned magna carta, romancing, dragon quest all boot up but then the load times are horrible; 50 sec per random battle and action and eventual freezing. Is the plus type reliable?
