Depends on your version PS2.

23. Q. What version is my PS2?
A. http://mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm

29. Q. I have a version X playstation. Should I use DVD-R's, DVD+R's, DVD-RW's, or DVD+RW's?
A. Well the PS2 doesn't load RW's well, if at all, so those are out. v.1-4 PS2's seem to work with better with DVD-R's. v.5-8 is 50/50, still probably better with DVD-R's. v.9 and later seem to prefer DVD+R's. If you know of an exception to this, i.e. you have a v. 9 which wont play+R's, or a v.2 which prefers DVD+R's, don't send me hate mail, it's just a rule of thumb. In general it's usually better to use DVD-R's when burning PS2 games.

I successfully backed up a copy of DQVIII on Verbatim DVD-R ID:MCC. It was a straight burn no rebuilding necessary. ISO read/write using DVD Decrypter on 4x speed. Using Swap Magic version 3.3, and has no lag issues or anything like that.

Would it be better to burn It @ 4x? I have magic Slide 3.6, and I've been burning it @ 2x. The slower the better the copy right? In most cases? ARrgghh

^^ I have used three different media types, all burned at slowest speeds:

Sony DVD+R Richon(or something)

Verbatim DVD+R MCC 003

Ridata DVD-R RITEKG05- Rebuilt game and over wrote dummy file "DMYDATA"

Still I am getting long load times when entering exting rooms, after fight sequences, and many other instances.I tired everything and still this game wont run right. I GIVE UP!

Whatever thoses japs did to prevent me from running this game properly have succeeded in doing so! I wasted a 10 pack of Verbatim's on this game ,ohh and btw this is the lamest Dragon Warrior game out of the series.

I tried everything all the experts said to try in this topic, but couldnt get this game to run right. Thank you for all your support.

If you have swap magic 3.6 and are running ps2 version 5/6 and got this game running please tell me what media you used and anything else you did to make this game work. Peace out.

Btw if you a noob and want to get involved in backing up games just get a 50 dollar mod chip and save yourself the trouble of games not playing properly.

Peace out.

@Afunguy This is the lamest Dragon Quest game out?! I disagree completely. It got a 9.0 rating from Gamespot. That's EGM's website basically. They don't give away good ratings, like game pro or some other lame sites. I haven't played that much of it, but it holds fast to the DQ formula: Lots of level building, job system, lengthy quest, and a good plot. DQV was awesome, DQVI was one of the best RPG's never released in the U.S. DQ 1-4 are legendary, no need to even go into those. Sorry it just sounds to me that you're hating on this game because you couldn't get it working. People this is a GOOD game. Read any online review of it if you don't believe me. Or better yet, get a copy. Have you tried rebuilding with Nero and IsoBuster, CD/DVDGen, and Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool)? Try changing burn speeds.

@ Dynasty X- Try burning at 4x. I don't know why a lot of people have had issues with this game. If downloading it fails, rent it and make a 1 to 1 copy. You would still have to overwrite the dummy file, but at least you could verify the iso you downloaded wasn't the problem. It seems to me a lot of these groups that upload games make crappy rips. I don't know how else to explain the problems with DQVIII, Matrix Path of Neo, Star Wars Battlefront 2, just to name a few.

Any one tried downgrading to swap magic 3.3?

It wouldn't make a difference. Swap Magic 3.3 is identical to Swap Magic 3.6, except that Swap Magic 3.6 has USB support.

Hey, I was just wondering if I could tap into the vast knowledge of the users here. I cannot get DQVIII to read in DVD Decripter, or Nero. No matter how slow I burn it, it still fails every time when it gets to about 17 percent complete. This is driving me up the wall! I have the actual game, I should be able to do a game to game copy! I understand the problem with the dummy files, but I cant even get there! I was just wondering if there was something that I am missing here...

Is the disc scratched or dirty? DVD Decrypter can be picky when creating an iso image. I've had this problem a couple times with some horribly scratched rentals. Try using Alcohol 120% to create the image. It'll create an image from just about anything. You'll get an mds file and an mdf file with Alcohol 120%. Then you burn the mds file with DVD Decrypter. That should work. Follow these steps: Open Alcohol 120%. Insert your copy of DQVIII. Click Image Making wizard. Select your recorder and a destination path for the iso. Check ignore read errors. Click next. The image should be ready in 10 to 15 minutes. After it's done, load the mds file into DVD Decrypter and burn as normal.

Okay, thanks man. I am trying that now. I will get back with the results in about 20-30 minutes. Yes, this is a rental copy, and the disk isnt really scratched, so I dont know whats going on. I dont know what it is, but I cleaned the disk, and am trying Decrypter one more time, if that doesnt work, I will use Alcohol 120%. Thanks for your help.

Oh, and I like your Signature.

I have the NTSC version of the game and used DVD Decrypter to read and write the ISO. Copied it at 8x onto a Memorex DVD-R with a Pioneer 110 and it seems just fine so far. I watched all the cut scenes and they seem to play just as well as the original had. My feeling is that this game should have no issues being burned to a DVD-R. I haven't put a hard drive in my PS2 yet, so I don't know if issues will arise with it then.

I use the Modbo chip with Matrix 1.38 on it, so maybe those with Swap Magic are the ones having issues?

I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts skipping. What's the media ID on those Memorex? Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, then check what it says under Manufacturer ID. Compare it to what you see here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I'm having the same problems on a V4 PAL PS2, NTSC Dragon Warrior 8 with SwapMagic 3.6, game burned onto Verbatim DVD-R. The same DVD-R brand works perfectly with other games.

The PS2 will try to load the disc but then you only hear the motor moving the lens from place to place, spinning up the disc, spinning it down again over and over. The analog LED on the controller comes on after a while, but except for that the screen stays black.

Is there anything new you found out in the meantime? Perhaps all of us are making the same mistake or using a shoddy ISO.

honestly I tried three diffrent warez Dragon Quest rips. ALl of them gave me long load problems. SO do like I did and smash your ps2 or get a real mod chip.

Oh btw there is dummy file in dragon quest .You need to rebuild this game if you using swap magic.

Yeah I'm aware of the dummy file. It's 50 MB's and is called dmydata. What speed did you burn at? what media are you using. Have you tried all three methods of rebuilding? My copy runs great, but I have a modchip.

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. Games over 4.38GB's will need rebuilt. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.

1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.

Make sure you do it in that order.

This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.

I rebuilt mine by hand, it had the "DMYDATA" file. Will try ExPERT next. All my attempts were on high quality Verbatim DVD-Rs burned at 1x. By now I think it would have been better to chip the console too :)

For some of you, the game at least seems to load eventually. I let mine sit there for 15 minutes and got nothing but a black screen - interesting.

Make sure you overwrite the dummy file. The guides explain how to do that. This is a great game, hopefully you can get it working, I'm playing through it now.

I joined the forum to share how I got this game to work, I've been reading the posts and trying non-stop.
Originally I burned on 16x DVD+R verbatims, without changing the dummy file.. the game ran, but lagged intensely.. long long load times.

So I replaced the dummy file and burned again, same laggy result.
I tried ASCENT DVD-R (apparently these are ****, hey, I didn't buy them) THESE DID NOT WORK.

After making 4 nice coasters out of my good Verbatim DVD+Rs I went out and picked up some 8x Verbatim DVD-Rs and burned the ISO which I had already rebuilt and replaced the dummy file. IT WORKS. My PS2 is a V1, I'm using Swap Magic 3.6 with a flip top case.

*** Note that the PS2 runs other DVD+R backups just fine, this was my first problem with it. Hopefully this can help someone out.

Program used to rebuild was Gnie's rebuilder, and DVD Decrypter to burn, at 2x on the Verbatim 8x DVD-R disc.

That's good to hear. I'm playing through this game now and it is really excellent. At least one Swap Magic user got it working. I'm not sure if it's human error or a bad rip uploaded via bittorrent that's caused people so much trouble, probably a combination of the two. C'mon Swap Magic users, you can this working with a little persistence, Snicky proves that.

I've finally gotten the game to work!! I used Gnie's rebuild method, booktyped the game to dvd-rom, burned at 8x on YUDEN000T02, and presto! The game works perfectly. I've used both the Nero method and Gnie's method many times and burned at 4x, but it never produced any good results for DQVIII. I guess this is an exception to the never burn at 8x rule. Then again, I've never had any problems with burning at 8x.
