Well most likely it was the quality Taiyo Yuden media. Those are the Sony DVD+R's made in Japan, if I'm not mistaken. They are also made by Taiyo Yuden. Either way, glad you got it working.

I had the slowdown problems, so I followed the guide earlier in this thread and used Gnie's rebuilder. I burned the ISO using DVD Decrypter.

However now the game won't load at all. I'm using SwapMagic and I get a bad PS2 disc error when trying to load it. Any ideas?

I dl'd from Blackcats.. had no prob.. ITs not the cheap media.. I wrote about this once 4.. Cheap media is not the main problem when burning.. Its mainly burn speed and what you are doing to interrupt the burn process. Leave the computer alone, minimize the amount of programs running and burn slow as possible.. I have used the cheapest walmart brand media possible for Cd-r and DVD-rs for the last several years and have no problems what so ever...

I beg to differ. There is never a good reason to use cheap media. I don't mean to rag on you, but half my posts are telling noobs to use good media, and when they read posts like yours, it undermines everything I do. Cheap media might work for you, but isn't worth the hassle. It'll skip, lag, freeze, or just won't boot. Even if that never happens the cheap dyes from the CMC Mag or whatever god awful media you're using will wear down your PS2. I could get several senior members or AD addicts to be back me up on this, but I don't need to. If cheap media works for you, good. But don't encourage noobs who are just starting out at backing up PS2 DVD games to use cheap media. Anyone reading this, that's not the way to go. Use good media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. Settle for no less than Ritek. Again I'm not attacking you Jlhfit, I would tell anyone who posted what you said the same thing. Please don't take it personally. That aside I agree with your other suggestions for successful burning. Check out this thread if you think cheap media doesn't make a difference:

CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):

@ strict9 What kind of media are you using? Swap Magic users have had issues with this game. Take Snicky's example to heart. He used quality DVD+R Taiyo Yuden media and it works. I have three copies of this game all backed up on TYG02 (8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's) and they work flawlessly. In fact I'm playing through this game right now. It's a terrific game.

Tokijin: I'm using Ritek DVD's. The copy I burned that was a directly downloaded ISO at least loaded, but ran very slowly. When I tried to rebuild is when I wasn't even able to load the game from Swap Magic. I feel like I maybe missed a step?

Maybe. Did you overwrite the dummy file? There is a 50 MB dummy file called dummydata in the root directory iso. You need to overwrite this file if you're rebuilding the game to play it with Swap Magic. I should add I have a modchip, so I don't need to rebuild this game. There are several Swap Magic users who have gotten this game to work.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.

1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.

Make sure you do it in that order.

This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.

49. Q. I'm rebuilding game X, I'm concerned it has dummy files. How do I identify the dummy files?
A. From Hursty: When you see the iso has dummy files.i.e 00DUMMY. 01DUMMY. GARBAGE ETC, you need to get rid of them, by replacing them with a file. So on the desktop, right click the mouse, select "new" > text document and rename it as it appears in isobuster, then click enter. Then open the text document on the desktop, hit space once, then save, this will create a text document with 1 byte in it, Do this for all the dummy files you have, as some games have more than one.

Here.. this is from a PM i wrote

Hey, sorry for the delayed response. In Gnie's rebuilding tool, I opened the program, chose the plugin, then selected my original ISO file, First I chose to Extract LBA then Extract file. After that was done, I minimized the rebuilding tool and i went into the folder where my original ISO was, i then selected the new file that was created from "Extracting File". Inside that folder I replaced the dummy file by first creating a text document with 1 space, chose to "Save As" then selected the DMYDATA and overwrote it. In my case, there was still a "New text document" left in the folder so i deleted that. THEN i went back into Gnie's tool and Rebuild File, then Rebuild LBA. Burned at 2x (DVD Decrypter) on a 8x DVD-R and it worked

BUT TAKE NOTE!!! That burn worked fine.. but it froze at a certain point in the game, I was unable to enter an area so I had to REDO this.. haha so these are the FURTHER steps I took to make the disc I'm currently playing on, which seems perfect.

1. I used ISOBuster and extracted my NEW ISO FILE that was made with Gnies rebuilder (I just opened ISOBuster, chose that NEW-DRAGONQUEST.ISO file.. and then in that list i selected everything and just dragged it over to a new folder i made for this purpose).

2. I opened Nero Burning ROM (Nero 6 Ultra) and chose UDF/ISO option from the "Create DVD" Screen. I looked from my ISOBuster list for the order of files on the ISO, and i dragged them into Nero in that order (they go out of order, but apparently the order you dragged them in is the only important thing).

3. I burned this new compilation at 2x, it took forever but it worked. and this time seems to work like a charm. I'm definetly NOT sure why yours isn't working but hopefully this helps.

*******
All of these steps mean nothing if you're using the wrong media for YOUR VERSION OF THE PS2. I was using DVD+R originally, 16x Verbatims. And no matter what, I had the lag. It was only when I switched to Verbatim 8x DVD-R, that it worked.

Glad you got it working. You had to rebuild a rebuild huh, makes me glad I have a chip lol. Hopefully people who have problems with this game will use your example as well as some other's. The key is persistence and good media.

I got it working with Swap Magic 2.0 or.n a V7 Ps2 with Fliptop cover. I followed the above rebuild method to the teeth, including changing the Dummyfile, and it works beautifully. Burned on Memorex DVD+R at 2.4x speed just fine.

Without changing the dumymfile it didn't work at all. XD

I had long loading problems with this game although my ps2 had a chip mod. I thought it was because my ps2 was old so I went and got a new ps2 slim but this time I went for Swap Magic. I had the exact same symptoms I had before, namely long load times between lvls and sometimes it would just blackout on me loading. I rebuilt the thing and now it works well. I followed Tokijin's steps but I didn't even bother with the IsoBuster step. I simply used the existing ps2 dvd, copied all the directories from the DVD onto a local drive. Replaced dummy file with empty text file, and burned it using Nero.

So far everything is working out great, at the very least the loading times have been reduced. I just hope the game would continue to work as it should.

I got a quick q. I replaced the dummy file with a 1 kb thing, but another file then appears with the same name as the dummy file but it has and extension called .bak . Has anyone else come across this? Is this normal?

And would it be possible to use DVD loader if my disc doesn't work?

94. Q. I can't get my backup of Dragon Quest VIII to work with Swap Magic, how can I get it working correctly?
A. This isn't a definite fix for this game, because I haven't tested it with Swap Magic. I rebuilt and it plays perfectly on my modded PS2. I need some guinea pigs with Swap Magic lol. Anybody who has tried to get this game working without any luck, feel free to try my method. I simply rebuilt the game with Nero and IsoBuster. You do have to overwrite the DMYDATA file, if you're using Swap Magic. Hope this helps some of you who can't get it working.

Things you'll need:
1. A DVD Burner.
2. 8-10GB's of free Hard Drive space.
3. A copy of the game iso (either from an original or one you downloaded).
4. DVD Decrypter: http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvd_decrypter
5. Nero: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/n...
6. IsoBuster: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/isobuster.cfm

1. Insert your copy of the game in your DVD-ROM drive. Open DVD Decrypter. Decrypt the game to your HD with DVD Decrypter. Click MODE-->ISO-->READ, then Click Decrypt. Once that's done, create a new folder on your desktop. Right click on the desktop. Go to New-->Folder. Name it DQVIII.

2. Open IsoBuster. Click File-->Open Image File. Browse to the DQVIII iso you just decrypted. Double click it.

3. You'll see all the game files open in IsoBuster. Hit ctrl+A and right click on the files. Click extract objects. Select the DQVIII folder you just created on your desktop as the destination. It'll take 10 to 15 mins for the extraction process to finish.

4. Once the process is finished, open the DQVIII folder. Right click in an unoccupied section of the folder. Click New-->Text Document. Double click the new text document. Once it's open, tap the space bar once. Go to File-->Save as. Browse to the DQVIII folder. Click on the "save as type" box. Select all files from the drop down menu. Double click the DMYDATA folder. Windows will tell you the DMYDATA file already exists and ask if you want to replace the existing DMYDATA file. Click yes. The new DMYDATA file should be 1 byte. Now if you still have a new text document in your DQVIII folder after overwriting the DMYDATA file, delete it. If it's still there, you must delete it. If it's not there, then move on to the next step. Here is a list of files that should now be in the root directory of the DQVIII folder (If the files aren't in this order, it doesn't matter. When rebuilding with Nero and IsoBuster, the order of the files doesn't matter):

1. BIN
2. MODULES
3. MOVIE
4. DATA2.DAT
5. DATA2.HD6
6. DATA.DAT
7. DATA.HD6
8. DMYDATA (should read as 1KB in windows, after overwriting it).
9. SLUS_212.07
10. SYSTEM

5. Close IsoBuster. Open Nero Burning ROM. If you can't find it, you may not have Nero Burning ROM installed. You need Nero Burning ROM for this, smart start won't work. Under New Compilation select DVD from the drop down box. Click on DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO), it's the last option. Click new. Open the DQVIII folder if you haven't already. Hit Ctrl+A. Once all the files are highlighted, right click them and click copy. Now right click in Nero and click paste. Once all the files are in Nero, click the burn icon. Make sure that "no multisession" is checked under the Multisession tab. Make sure "write" is checked under the Burn tab. Set the write speed to 4x. Burn to quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, as always. Click Burn. Once the disc is done, it should be 3.84GB's. This should work, but I can't garuntee it will with Swap Magic. I hope that it does. If you follow my guide, I believe that it will. Swap Magic users give this a try and lemme know how it goes. Good Luck!

I have swap magic 3.3 and i got it working last week. Alls i did was replace the dummy file using ExPERT then burn the game onto a DVD-R disk. I think it might not be possible to burn onto a DVD+R, but i can't be bothered to test it out. I burnt it using dvd decryptor at the slowest speed, which in a weird way seems better with ps2 games than Alcohol 120%.
So far the game runs perfectly, and it only skipps when the ps2 is having a bad day (the disc is pretty much perfect). Oh, and you must delete the DMYDATA.bak which might appear (did to me anyways).

Pretty big thread for what is supposed to be a a pretty big game. Sup Tokijin? Im downloading a rar file containing DQVIII i'll probly be able to extract the file. Will i need to rebuild it to put it on my HDD though? Ive got HD Advance 3.0 PAL Version so i would think not, since the TOC size for the HD Advance disc is supposed to be pretty big anyway. If they wanted a Large TOC why didnt they just use a dual-layered disc lol then i would be able to directly convert it on my PS2.

With Thanx, Ash

I'm not sure. Do dummy files affect games loaded off the HD? I wouldn't think so, but I don't know for sure. Load it to the HD as normal, if it doesn't work then rebuild it using my guide. I know it works. On a side note, I'm playing thru DQVIII now and it's a great game.

I've been having problems with this, but no other ps2 game...this is a first. I followed every step mentioned and now have 3 wasted DVD's to show for it.

It's odd though...because the ps2 reads the disc...its just after the Playstation 2 logo appears its just black...and dies there. Aside from what everyone wrote, I did note that the booktype on the last two DVD's was DVD+R so I changed the booktype and am making one final attempt before I hand in the towel. For the record, I'm using Sony DVD+R's...but I've burned four other games prior to this, for myself and friends just to test their mod chips and swap magics and those work perfectly...although they did have their book type to DVD-ROM...hopefully that was the only error, I'll reply back with my last attempt.

thanks for the help all.

Are you overwriting the dummy file? My guide does work, people with Swap Magic have confirmed it does. Sony DVD+R's should have the YUDEN media code, so I don't think that's the problem. Is your firmware up to date? Is your burner in DMA mode?

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

I don't think that's the issue, the Sony DVD+R's made in Japan are Taiyo Yuden's. It could be, but I think it's something he's overlooking during the burning process. Look over all the steps again, make sure you didn't miss anything. Also make sure your firmware is up to date and your burner is in DMA mode.

Most likely it's the Media. What's the Media ID of the discs you're using? Before you counter with the obligatory "all my other games work, I know it's not the media" statement, that doesn't matter. Certain games are very picky with non first rate media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
