Choosing a new graphics card

Yeah so I got a new computer about a week ago and I'm new to all this computer gaming. It's a Dell 8400 and came with an ATI Radeon X300 PCI Express 128mb. The guy said it could play every game out there on a high setting but it was really laggy when playing King Kong.
So I have $100 in-store credit and I would be willing to pay maybe $100 - $150 extra.
I want a good graphics card that plays every game out there right now like Doom 3 and Half Life 2 on a mid-high setting with really crazy awesome looking totally insane graphics.
Maybe around $200 - $300. I went on ATI's website and looked at their x1800 series model and it seemed pretty good but a bit to expensive. I heard Nvidia is pretty good to but I have no clue what to get and yeah so any help on this would be great.

EDIT: It would be cool to get an answer by tonight/tomorrow morning because I am going to the store tomorrow.

You should really read some articles before you let other people make your decisions for you... An X300 won't play everything on high settings as you should know by now.
Of course, the other specs on your computer will make a lot of a difference as well. What are your other specs like your CPU and RAM? You don't wanna buy an expensive card if your computer can't unleash its full potential.
Read some of this and you can make some decisions.

My opinion would be to get an ATI X850 PRO or an Nvidia 6800 GT. Nvidia seems to be leading the battle for king of graphics cards right now, but for the price you want to pay, an x850 or 6800 series card would be fine for you. Just check out some reviews and do pricing.

Yeah I read up on some of this stuff but I have no clue what half of it means.
I have 512mb of ram and I plan to get more and my CPU is a 3GHz Pentium 4 and I checked out the x1800 series card.
I just checked out those two cards and the ATI X850 Pro seems to be better than the Nvidia 6800 GT.

All cards perform differenly in certain games. Doom 3 and chronicles of riddick do best with nvidia. Battlefield 2 seems to lean more towards ATI. If you're thinking of the x1800 series, i'd end up waiting a bit then getting yourself an nvidia 7800GTX 512mb if you're gonna throw up some serious cash. I really would just forget about the x1800 and go for an x850 series or x800 series or 6800GT to get the best out of your cash. And to be honest, buying from a store like staples or something will rob you of cash. www.newegg.com gives really good prices on cards so you can get something better for less.

go here and that way you can see what the prices are for cards right now. That way you'll know if you're being ripped off and paying up to $100 more than you need to.

there's nothing better than a nvdia 6600gt for a mid level graphic card get the best bang out of ur money

Whoa that GeForce 7800 GT with COD2! Awesome I think I shall look at that but I wasn't going to any best buy or staples I was going to a local store and I'm good friends with the dude

try www.tigerdirect.com good shopping, and reviews on products. As somebody said before do the research on the product first. We all have opinions on items but yours is the only one that matters for you.

McTwist you should check out the reviews no this site http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=Videocards & find more reviews from different sites such as tomshardware, Andtech, & others before you jump in & buy a card .... my choice with a max budget of $350 would be a 7800GT which can had from $299.99 on newegg, & with the other $50 i'd get another stick of 512mb ram .... but hey thats just me :)
