Hey guys,
I have a serious problem that I have run into which is driving me up the wall trying to figure out. Here is the situation, I record video onto RiData DVD-r's and after I finalize the DVD everything is fine. I can play them on my Sony DVD player, I can play them on my JVC DVD recorder, as well as my other JVC DVD recorder. Problem occurs afterwards, lets say 2 months later. I pull the DVD out of the case that I keep them in and put it in my Sony DVD player and it will not play at all? This does not happen to all DVD's, just some as some play and some others don't? I only use RiData 8x DVD-r's which I have been using for a while now. NOW, sometimes I am able to make a copy of the DVD that won't play using my DVD burner and the new copy will play and I will just keep the new copy and throw the old DVD out. Other times I can't even copy the DVD using my DVD burner as the source drive is unreadable? Hope this didn't confuse you, and I hope someone can help me. Seems like my discs are just falling apart with age, and I am not talking years but just months? Are the RiData DVD's not good DVD's? Should I switch to Taiyo Yuden DVD's and do you think this would solve my problem? I am up for anything, as this is really frustrating me.
Thanks,
EC

I think that you do have a media issue. Try the Taiyo Yuden, verbatim, maxell's.
What speed do you burn at? Try to keep burn speed to 4x or less. Sometimes burning a maximum will cause problems. Also make sure you target size is 4300 or so to keep from burning too close to the edge of the disc, where the dye press is less than perfect on some media types.
You might want to download dvdinfopro and have a look at the disc's in question to check the media id and the quality of the burns.
You can download it free at www.filepedia.com in the dvd info section.

Are you putting stick-on labels on your back ups? Labels can cause this problem. Also keep burn speed to 4x. If problem still persists I recommend switching to verbatum or taiyo yuden media and if your drive is capable booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom.

I am recording using my DVD recorder so this is not a speed issue. I am not using any DVD labels either. I guess I will try a better media, I thought the RiData was a good media already but I could be wrong. Where can I get some Taiyo Yuden DVD-r's in Canada? I went to one website but they only ship to the USA?

You have 2 threads about the same problem. It is against the rules to do so. Please refrain from doing this in the future.

Try changing to DVD+R's if your recorder is compatible.
