Couple of things come to mind.

What speed are they burned at?

What is the Media type?

Did you set the target size to 4300, cause if you didn't you could have burned too close to the edge of the disc which will cause freezing and pixleations.

4x verbatim ... im thinking its mite be burning to close to the edge

ok lets just say im doing robots shrinking with DVD Shrink the green bar at the top shows 4,463 is that what needs to be 4,300 i remove some of the audio that i dont need it still doesnt change... but i dont want to reauthor because i want the menus??? what do i do to make it smaller or is that even what i need to do ??

Your problem is most likely budget priced media. The syptoms sure sound like a low end media problem to me. With cheap manufacturing methods, the quality at the outside edge of the pressed layers of the backup media is often the flawed. Since DVD's -/+R is writen from the center to the outer edge, that probably accounts for your playback problems near the end of the movie.

Stay away from media made by compusa, memorex, maxell, tdk etc. some are ok some are bad and some vary in quality depending on the batch or what country or factory made the media. Find out what your burner likes to eat and standardize on it. Most members here like verbatim, TY (Tayou Yuden or however you spell that damn name) and sony (if made in japan). Others may post their brand suggestions. But it depends on your what your burner likes. Don't feel you are stuck buying the crap alot of retail stores put on their shelves. Order over the internet if you can't find the brand you want. Do a AfterDawn seach for media suggestions to check out other member's opinions on media. If you search using the "keyword" "Memorex" you will get tons of threads not only describing how Memorsux but what to use instead for diffent burners.

Check the burner manufacturer's website and see if there is a newer version of firmware that you can flash the drive with.

Also, keep you burn speed to 4x on 8x media, and 6x on 16x media.

And shut off all anti-virus programs, firewalls, auto web updates and don't use your computer for anything else while burning.

If using quality media doesn't solve your sister's probs, then post back your backup programs used, are you compressing or splitting or burning to DL. Also the media brand, country of manufacture and type + or - and speed rating. In other words you provided very little info for diagnosis.

Best regards,
Whisperer

Ahh, you got your verbatim post in before I posted. That's good media. Good out to the edge.

But media will not hold 4.7GB like the label says. Single layer media holds only 4.37GB at the MOST and it is safer to go with axemurder's suggestion of 4.30GB. And you posted above that your backup size is 4,463. Too much data for a single layer burn.

If the movie won't fit in that amount of space and you want to keep the menus and you don't want to "reauthor" as you say, you WILL have to split the movie onto two SL disks or burn the expensive Dual Layer media. AD has a very loyal crowd of Shrink supporters so I am probably gonna get hammered for my comments. But Shrink only shrinks, it doesn't split. Don't know if it burns dual layer. Never tried the freeware stuff, always figured you get better by paying money. I read about posters using 3 different free programs plus a decryptor to get a backup. Too much effort for me!

Movies take up alot of data space these days. Shrink is not being updated anymore and is falling behind in it's abitlity to overcome new copy invalid-block protections. Your sister may need a more up to date backup software program with more sophisticated options. Sure it's free but ...

Download a 21 day free trial of CloneDVD which allows for compressing the movie to fit on a SL disk WITH menus and allows for splitting and for DL burning. It is available in a bundle along with AnyDVD which decrypts virtually all movies.

God you make fast short posts!

Re-read my post above because I added some fresh re-edits

Gotta go do some chores now and go out and buy more media too.

E-Write customer service and say you made a mistake and really meant to order the CloneDVD/AnyDVD special price bundle and can you just pay the difference and not the full price for CloneDVD. BTW you DON'T need CloneCD included in the bundle. You'll never use it.

http://www.slysoft.com/en/purchase.html

When you get CloneDVD, go right to "Help". It is a real easy to understand user manual. One read through and you'll appreciate the ease and elegace of use.

And check out the cdf forum. There are thread sections for both CloneDVD and AnyDVD. Being a member both at this fine AD forum and cdf will give you an added edge in resolving issues.

here's a tip, you can burn max up to 4360mb, still leaves it close to the edge, but not quite. also, check best buy, they have the verbs this week, 25pk for 7.99 after instant rebate. they code out as MCC 04 which is by far, one of their best, both + and - format.
