well u just have to be careful when flashing, i did "fry" my mobo a few years ago due to an improperly done flash too, so i KNOW exactly where your concerns are coming from...it's a really crappy feeling, ur right~ :)
but, flashing a drive is MUCH easier/ or just as easy as flashing your bios...just make sure you dl the CORRECT one for your particular model burner...then follow the simple instructions step by step after you unzip the file/ or just double click the *.exe file that comes w/ the installer~ :)
i didn't bring up the "do not power down" to scare or intimidate you, i only stated it because when i first started out and did my 1st flash ever, i FRIED my drive because i shut down the computer because i THOUGHT something was wrong/that my pc just "froze up"; but it was actually just completing the "flashing process"...stupid me, i just turned it off and when i rebooted...NO MORE DRIVE~!, just a word of caution to NOT make the same mistake i did years ago, that's all~ :)
all i can say is...if you do NOT update your firmware for that drive you own, when newer and newer media are available on the market, there is a GOOD CHANCE your drive will NOT properly recognize ANY of them and you WILL be limiting yourself to only using the OLD STOCK 4x speed discs for your burns...WHY limit yourself when you have SOOOO MANY other possibilities out there? but hey, it's YOUR CHOICE...i know for a FACT that once the firmware is properly updated, you WILL be much happier with the burner and the various medias you throw at it in the future :)
