For Newbies:

DVD Decrypter (free - this is such an awesome ripper & burning engine).

Nero Recode 2 - (retail, but usually comes with any new dvd burner when you buy them) fast and produces great quality pictures with using "Advanced Analysis" and Slow Mode.

DVD Shrink - (free and it's a very useful tool).

DVDFab Decrypter - (free and will rip/decrypt any new release DVDs)

adstout,

Alkohol said it all - and I would also like to add CloneDVD2 - it is not free, but it is a nice program, and if you purchase anydvd, you can get both discounted if you buy anydvd and clonedvd together - ALSO you can get a 10 discount for being an afterdawn member.

ANYDVD and CLONEDVD2 both have free trial periods

Also like to add DVD Rebuilder - they have a free program and one you can purchase that has more features. Many ppl rave about its quality, but they do say it takes a bit longer to process (which is probably why the quality is so great)

---

PS - in my opinion - ANY OF THE PROGRAMS (or combo of) will be better than what you are using now.

Most of the Mods and Senior Members from the DVDXCopy Forums are using AnyDVD with Clone DVD and have been for a long time
I also use AnyDVD with DVDShrink/Nero Recode
If you have a Dual Layer Burner and Discs you can use AnyDVD and use the Copy Disc feature in Nero or Roxio EZMC to get a 1:1 backup without compression
There are lots of choices out there that are better than Xcopy.
You should just try several of them out and use what works best for you

the key here is WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU! Many people wonder about this program or that...... and I have many.... I just use what works best for me and stick to it.... basically I use DVDFab Express, and if the quality of the compression is lower than 80% then I use DVDDecrypter (which so far is still the king of the rippers) and then DVDRebuilder Pro. There are other programs I use but those are my main ones.

I agree with and recommend those programs as well. My staple is AnyDVD running in the background for all my rips, whether I need it or not, DVDShrink and DVDdecrypter or Imgburn to burn.

I also have CloneDVD2 which is also excellent.

Cheers.

I just got to step up to the plate??..

My Newbie List:

DVD Shrink (Free, not Up-dated anymore but still not Out-dated. Will rip and shrink about 99% of the movies that come out.)

DVD Decrypter (Free, Can?t get it anymore so if you have one, back it up it?s still alive and well.

Nero (Not free but if you got one with a burner, update it. The version 6 is great but I won?t recommend Ver 7 until the bugs get worked out.)

DVDFab Decrypter ( Free, Great ripper/decrypter for the new Sony protection, no extras like DVDD has just a simple format but works well.)

ImgBurn (Free from the author of DVD Decrypter. It?s a burner Only and will work with DVD Shrink.)

AnyDVD ( Not a Freebee but, it?s worth its? weight in gold? This is the only PayFer Proggy that I?ll recommend. )

I personally only use Shrink and Burn with Nero unless it?s a Sony then I turn on AnyDVD?

IMHO......

Well,

You have gotten many good repsonses - and the one thing you notice is - all of us are bringing up most of the same types of programs.

There are so many out there to choose from, but you really can't go wrong with any of these.

And even though most of us have our personal favorites, we still have extra programs we use from time to time - just depends on our needs.

As you become better acquainted with your choices, I am sure you will settle with whatever suits you best. Happy burning!

9mmruger1 & 2oldGeek,

I wanted to ask you two how you like imgburn. I wanted to try it out since I had heard it was from the same maker of the old dvd Decryptor, but I recalled seeing a big debate over this and that earlier this year and really could not recall what it was all about.

If either (or both of you) are still reading in this thread, I just wanted to know what your general opinion of imgburn is?

@zhelpz

I use it about 30% of the time to do my burning. I am planning to set it up so that shrink will open it to burn instead of decrypter this weekend. With the new version 1.1.0.0 I am thinking this will be great.

It looks identical to decrypter and I have seen no difference in the burn.

Check out the change log here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265164

Looks good to me. I did download the new version as well as DVDD just so that I have a backup copy of the DVDD exe.

9mmruger1,

Thanx for that feedback - I DL'ed the 1.1.0.0 version and am looking foward to testing it.

One thing I have learned being in Afterdawn, I have been amazed at some of the software around - and sometimes the free ones are as good as the ones we have to pay for - (and depending on what software - sometimes the free ones are better) *L*

Looking at that link you provided "DISCOVERY MODE" sounds real interesting ......

I did the switch with imgburn and shrink that makes shrink open up imgburn instead of decrypter to burn and it seems to work really well. It has an interesting que button that is right next to the browse for ISO and will show the que that is due to burn. Interesting. Burned Interview with a Vampire and Legend of the Swordsman without a hitch. Booktyped to DVD rom and they turned out great.

I will use imgburn for a while and see how it goes.

Cheers.

@9mmruger1,

Let me know how ImgBurn pans out. I?m old but, still have to work for a living (or existence) and won?t get to play with it until my days off???..

Hope my expectations are not set too high LOL?

Dvd Rebuilder/CCE or HC encoder by Hanks are encoders as opposed to DVD Shrink, clonedvd2, or Nero recode2 which are transcoders. That is why it is slower and also why it produces better quality.

mort - ooohhhhh, ok - so it is an encoder vs. transcoder - ok - well that makes even more sense.

I finally got a chance to play around with it with one of my disk - I put it to HD. then compressed the full disk using Recode on an RW; and also did the same with Rebuilder - put that on a RW also and I really could not believe how good it looked.

I could tell there was a difference, and especially for so much compression it was. But I want to do a movie that has more exciting scenes so I can really test it out.

But it is definitely better -

-----------------

9mmruger1

Earlier today I tried to use it to do a burn and it would not pull up the files. I had it in write mode - but I probably did something stupid because I was rushing doing some of my testing. I hope I am able to have the old decryptor and the new imgburn on the comp at the same time (of course, this could be pointless though once I get imgburn up and going). Imma check it out again when I get a chance to take my time. The problem with rushing - it tends to cause more problems *L*

But I was messing around with all the tab buttons and so forth and I saw that QUE part to and was thinking to myself - now thats cool!
