This burner is a 16x. I have had it almost a year and it is burning slow. It wont read dvds. I have to use my dvd rom and that takes 1 hour to read then it takes the burner 30 mins to burn.I use dvd decrypter and shrink and nero. I had it as an external drive ,but I moved it to internal. I use memorex 16x dvd+r and ridata 8x. I noticed the buffer level on the burning software has been jumping around.I have never updated firmware.Ive done the DMA if available.what firmware should i download. From the nec site or oem.

When you checked DMA if available, did it say crrent tranfer mode was DMA or Pio? If stuck in Pio it would explain your problem.
Latest firmware from NEC should be tried first. Hacked version would allow for booktyping and remove riplock.

I did a firmware update and it didnt help the speed. It said it was burning at 16x but it took 30min to burn. The DMA if available is checked but underneath it says pio.How do I change that? And the buffer level is still bouncing when using nero

Your slowdown is comfirmed to be Pio related. If "DMA if available" is checked but IDE channel is stuck in Pio, you'll have to reinstall the IDE channel.
Go back to device manager and right click the IDE channel that contains the burner stuck in Pio. Choose "uninstall", close device manager and then reboot. Windows will rediscover the IDE channel and report "new hardware found" as it reinstalls. You should be back to DMD mode (no Pio) and full speed ahead for the burner/drives on that IDE channel.

Ok that made the burner faster. Now another question. When I tried to use the dvd writer for reading dvd and burning it it would read it but when i went to burn it it wouldnt burn nothing ,but the file said it was saved in showed it was there. And the if i use my dvd rom it takes like 1 hour to read or even longer. How can i speed this up?

What burning program? Is it set to "test" rather than an actual burn? What type media?
Is that DVD-ROM st to DMA?

Shrink "Deep Analysis" takes much longer than a single pass analysis.
Does burning an image with Decryptor do any better than burning a Video_TS folder by Nero? Is media compatible with burner?
Are other applications running? Is RAM sufficient?

Deep analysis is under "Analysis" button on the main toolbar at the top. Regular anaylsis should begin when you "open disk, open file, or open image".

Hi there,

Memorex are the worse media that exists on this earth !

Use them as frisbies :)

Use quality media like (Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell Made In Japan)

Burn slow, x2.0 or x4.0MAX this will prevent playback issues.

IF you are going to burn at x8.0 (I suggest to never burn above 8x) make sure you have lots of free ram, stop all the background processes, else you PC will be too busy and will not be able to feed the burner fast enought to burn that fast !
