I never went in for the whole shrinking fiasco before and find that DVD+R DL is coming into fashion nicely. Eventually it ought to kill off the shrinking game for good.

But since I'm learning my backup methods strictly for dual layers, I'm wondering now if it isn't so wise to begin customizing my backups to heavily. So far I've only needed to use the ISO Read and Write method with DVD Decrypter to get good backups. I'd say the only customizing of the backups I've done is to use DVDD's own option for removing PUO's. But with now planning to backup some of those disney discs, I have horrible memories of half hour advert sessions before the show gets going. I'd like to strip away that noise and get some backups which even a kid could just stick in and watch.

But what can I expect if I try to fool around with apps like VobBlanker on straight dual layer backups? Haven't tried AnyDVD with CloneDVD yet either.

Hi there,

If I was going to use Dual Layer Media, I would just do a copy of the whole DVD period.

You know it fill fit, and the quality will be 100% since no compression will be needed.

And this way, you get all the extras (That *I* like) and all the menus. Everything is untouched !

The only reason why you would not do the whole disk, is if you want to do the movie only, and wanted to fit 2 movies on 1 DL media.

My 2 cents...

Hypocrip,

Here's a link from a fellow poster, who wrote a very excellent guide for VobBlanker, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/244091
and, of course, there are others also on this site.

I'm just wondering if I'm opening up a pandora box by trying to edit out useless junk. I like real extras too but can do without endless adverts before reaching the main menu.

Well, consider it a "learning experience", I'm going to try it also on my next burning session, however, I am not going to burn it to a DVD. I will just play with it on my HDD, and then see if it plays with PowerDvd, or perhaps test the finished product with Shrink.

See ya,

Its just a matter of preference. Some people might value having an identical copy while others want to customize something. It might be save time to do an exact copy to cause you don't have to figure anything out.

You could give AnyDVD a try (21 day free trial). It has an option to skip ads and go right to the main menu or movie. The ads are still there, but you never see them.

Is that true about AnyDVD? Does the "Jump directly to Title Menu" feature simply bypass the preliminary warnings/adverts? Without actually removing them all together? I suppose that wouldn't be too drastic a change to cause many problems.

I'm with you. Forget all the shrinking and blanking and freeware. Burn whole original on dual layer media or split the original onto two SL media disks.

Yes, AnyDVD allows backups that go right to the menu on many movies. Some DVD movies resist the feature though, but it is easy to overcome. For instance you mentioned Disney movies. Notice how they won't let you access the menu with your remote control until they have forced you to watch the previews? The best you can hope for is to use the chapter advance button (>>|) to skip one at a time through the previews till you finally get to the menu (good reason to justify crashing an airplane into the Disney DVD production building).

Well, when you play a Disney backup made using AnyDVD, it actually does not go to the menu automaticaly, but the backup does not "nullify" the menu button on your remote from working. I.E. when you hit the menu button on your remote, it WILL override Disney's authoring (which forces you to watch the previews) and go directly to the menu without a problem.

For my money, AnyDVD used with CloneDVD works the best and easiest. Just copy the whole DVD. Only problem is that CloneDVD does not allow a layer break at "exactly" the same point as the original. It breaks at the end of the chapter closest to the originals layer break. On a few data packed original movies this can cause a slight problem which requires a little juggling of special features. But it is just as easy to use CloneDVD's easy user interface to deselect the previews so they are not even on the backup thus relieving any layer break space problems.

BTW: Olli, the author of CloneDVD, has indicated that the next coming update of CloneDVD will have the ability to automatically break at the precisely the same layer break point as the original.

Best regards,
Whisperer

I doubt I will ever have the need for DL media except on extremely long movies eg. LOTR. I have no use for all the previews and adverts which usually take up at least 1/3 of an original dvd but I do like a functional menu, the movie, and most of the extras therefor I use DvdRemake to remove the previews, adverts, warning screens, and any extras I don't want and then encode the trimmed and polished folder with DvdRebuilder/CCE. I can not see any loss in video quality between the original and my backup on my 52" HDTV and I don't have all that garbage on my backup and my dvd media (verbatum DVD+R hub printable) only cost 50 cents as oppossed to $2.00 or more.

So far my backups using DVD Decrypter have handled the layer breaks flawlessly.

I can only expect DL media to inevitably come down in price per disc. Once we see DL RW's appear for consumer level sale then I'd predict the cost of regular DL's to come down. Same thing happened with CDR/CDRW and then DVDR/DVDRW. Once DL is efficient on the wallet it will end the days of shrinking.

Mort,

Never say never. I thought that also, however, I have been looking at the MyHd MDP-130, and Fusion Gold USB devices, and I am seriously probably going to be buying one or the other, just to record and burn to DVD in HD some of these great shows, like Lost, Desperate Housewives, all the CSI's, and several others, and the only way to get them on one DVD is with the DL DVD's. As soon as I figure which direction to go, I am doing it. Oh I was going to hack my HR10-250, so I could do this, but after reading so many threads on the subject, it looks like it is more of a hassle than it is worth.

Just my 2˘,

Rich

I'm also intrigued by how cheap storage capacity is becoming and how it will affect what we store in a smaller amount of physical space. I'd say the leaps in hard drive and optical capacities are the advancing at the hottest rate in the whole computing spectrum. Far faster than processing power is advacning. I used to fight on hydrogenaudio's forums about when storage capacity will become so vast that audio compression won't be necessary any longer. So we could kill off mp3 and ogg and wma for good and stick with regular old PCM wav files. Of course the industry will probably force a newer high definition format like DVDA or SACD as the standard. But here's a gem to get your storage saliva flowing. Check out this new optical format from Memorex:
