I, too, am searching for a color laser to replace a 12 year old NEC mono laser. With kids school projects getting more frequent and complicated (with pictures, charts, graphs, etc), I feel this is the way to go to keep them off my photo printer. After reading countless reviews and going to the store to look at actual output examples, I am leaning toward the HP 2550N or 3550. A $100 rebate is being offered for the 2550 till the end of the year. The one complaint that I frequently see is that the color toner cartridges have a chip that counts down the pages available for printing on the cartridges whereby the machine stops printing till a fresh cartridge is installed. The main gripe is that frequently the printer says to replace the cartridge but there is still considerable color toner (>10%) left in the cartridge. With the 2550, one can use non-oem cartridges but the countdown feature will not function with these cartridges. Some answer to simply use the included cartridges until the printer signals to replace, then replace with the non oem models and run them till the print quality signals it's time to change a cartridge.

Some people have said there is a work around for this, but I have not yet found it posted. I have relied on Afterdawn to answer my questions for authoring CD's and DVD's but I cannot find a forum that goes comparitively deep into the printer arena.
