My 4 in 1 built in memory card reader has stopped working. I'm thinking it may be a hardware problem though. Under "My Computer" there used to be an icon for each memory card - ie. Compact flash, menory stick. But now they have gone. I have tried re-installing the drivers to no avail. I think it stopped working after I had a failure on one of my dvd drives and a blue screen came up telling me to "restart if this is the firsrt time this has happened, if this has happend before seek expert advice". Anyone have a clue what could be wrong?? Thanks.

I'm not sure which one to uninstall as Universal Serial Bus Controllers has about 12 USB devices under it. Nothing mentioned about a card reader though

Run the add/remove hardware wizard and see if comes up. BTW did you add any new hardware,eg the DVD drive recently?. If the answer to the first question is no, then it sounds like you'll have to take a trip inside the box. I'll wait on your response.

I thought I would have to open it up. I tried add new hardware wizard already to no avail. I don't suppose there will be a small fuse or anything that I could easly repair. I have other means of getting my pictures off my flash card but it's bugging that it's stopped working. I'll have a look in the box tomorrow as it's now 11.30pm and I have work to get up for. Thanks for the replies sofar.

some motherboards have fuses for ps2 mouse, keyboard & usb ports whereas others have a jumper wire in place of the fuse, so see if can identify a fuse to the card reader that has f# such as f1 or f10 printed on the motherboard. do you have or can borrow a multimeter?

I have a multimeter as I am an electrician. I will try that tomorrow then, and let you know how I get on.

I totally concur with Ddp's advice but here's a small suggestion before you make any changes. Trace all connections from your motherboard +/- power supply to the reader and just press in the conections(or unplug & replug them) to ensure that they are all properly seated. Reboot and see if it helps. I know it seems simple and redundant but my SCSI CD burner goes dead periodically for no good reason and all it takes is going in the box and giving the SCSI PCI card a little nudge into the PCI slot.
